Background

For everyone who can trace back ancestors (paternal Y-DNA, maternal mtDNA, min. 1/8 of the genome = autosomal DNA = one greatgrandparent) to Alpine valleys.
Should you join this young (May 2012) volunteer group? Read FTDNA DNA-Projects FAQ and see what ancestors are interesting for this project: 

• ALPINE-ISOLATE: by genealogy to an alpine isolate (small far off valley, difficult to access, etc.).
  
• ALPINE: by genealogy to alpine places.
  
• ALPINE-BORDERS: by genealogy to a region bordering to the Alps (includes bordering hills and greater valley settlements). 
• ALPINE-PROBABLY: by good evidence from the Alps (max. 20 generations ago).
  
• MINORITY: from an minority that maybe have not admixted much with other alpine populations and not lived many generations in the Alps.
• CENTRAL-EUROPEAN: from Central Europe (not over 400 km away from the Alps).
  
• ALPINE-ANCIENT?: by Haplogroup history or DNA-admixture maybe from the Alps (over 20 generations ago).
• OUTSIDERS?: you don't fit in one of the above groups and your benefit by joining is probably low.

Name indications of the Y-DNA groups: First the main haplogroup and terminal SNPs are showed, then the past should be visible by 700 year steps. Ca. year 1300 by positions of the member ancestors. Ca. year 600 by first proposed position/culture. Ca. year 100 BC by proposed position/culture in parentesis. The grouping goal is to find clusters with Common Ancestor (see also MRCA) not more then 3,000 years ago. The prediction is higly speculative and can only be made if a 37/67 marker profile is in the group and public FTDNA-Projects Matches (or elsewhere) are available.
