About us

The project will bring together Z198+ SRY2627+ L165+ and CTS4188+ individuals with the aim of discovering further shared genetic markers and learning more about their haplogroup.

FTDNA customers who satisfy one of the following criteria are invited to join the Project
(a) anyone who has been tested positive for Z198, SRY2627, L165 or CTS4188 by FTDNA or Geno 2.0. FTDNA tests which cover these SNPs include Big Y, Family Finder and the R-Z198 SNP Pack.
(b) anyone who has been tested positive for Z198 or SRY2627 (= M167)  by another DNA testing company (e.g. 23andMe) and has purchased (as a minimum) the 37 marker test from FTDNA;
(c) anyone who has genetic and/or documentary evidence which indicates they share recent paternal ancestry with project members satisfying (a) or (b);
(d) anyone who has DYS490 = 10 and clearly belongs to R1b1b (whether tested or not) - this value occurs particularly strongly within R-SRY2627 and we are interested in understanding its significance.
(e) anyone who has DYS525 = 6 and clearly belongs to R1b1b (whether tested or not) - this unusual DYS525 value has been observed in some SRY2627+ individuals who have DYS490 = 10 and we are interested in understanding its significance.

Project members are encouraged to upgrade their results from the minimum requirements - ideally up to 111 markers or the full Big Y (Y700) test.
Please note the project administrators no longer recommend the purchase of the Z198 SNP pack as this test only covers SNPs which were on the haplotree in mid 2015.

The goals of the project are to assist project members to understand their test results and connect them to their closest YDNA relatives.
The project complements surname based YDNA projects by focussing especially on the period before fixed surnames were brought into use.
Project members will therefore normally be placed in groups which include several surname lines.
