The purpose of this project is to connect McDowell families through the combined use of DNA testing and traditional genealogical research. By comparing Y-DNA, Family Finder, and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) results with documented family histories, we work to identify relationships between McDowell lineages, discover shared ancestors, and help participants overcome genealogical brick walls.

We welcome all individuals with McDowell ancestry, regardless of whether they are male or female. Descendants of McDowell lines, those researching McDowell family connections, and individuals with variant spellings or suspected McDowell ancestry are also encouraged to participate.

• Develop reference lineages using advanced Y-DNA testing.
• Combine DNA evidence with traditional family history research.
• Preserve and share McDowell genealogical knowledge for future generations.

For men with the McDowell surname, Y-DNA testing is the most powerful tool for tracing direct paternal ancestry. We recommend at least a Y-37 test, with Big Y-700 providing the greatest value for lineage identification and project research.

Family Finder testing is recommended for both men and women and can help identify McDowell cousins and connections across multiple family lines.

Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) testing is also available for those interested in exploring their direct maternal ancestry.

DNA results are most valuable when combined with documented genealogy. Participants are encouraged to provide their paternal lineage, tracing themselves back to their earliest known McDowell ancestor whenever possible. This information helps project administrators compare genetic results with family trees and identify potential connections among participants.

The project is committed to maintaining the privacy and integrity of participant information. To receive meaningful assistance with your results, we strongly recommend granting project administrators at least Limited Access to your DNA data. Greater access allows administrators to better analyze matches, identify lineage connections, and provide research assistance.

Project members are also invited to join the private Facebook community, "The McDowell DNA and Genealogy Group," where participants can discuss genealogy, share research, and collaborate with other McDowell descendants.
