Gillespie Surname DNA Project - Results

Aug. 23, 2013 - This is a DRAFT PAGE and will be added to in the coming months.
Sept. 24, 2013 - updated

CLAN MACPHERSON:

The GILLESPIE surname is included in CLAN MACPHERSON as an ASSOCIATED SURNAME.

CLAN MACPHERSON does not have SEPTS which indicate a genetically related surname.

Results of the Gillespie DNA Project have shown that test participants represent many unrelated Gillespie lines that can trace their families back into the early 1700s. There are also some Gillespie lines in this project that closely match other surnames indicating a surname switch at some point.Although there apparently was a Gillespie family many years ago that associated with Clan Macpherson and likely prompted their inclusion within Clan MacPherson by the Lord Lyon, that family has not been identified in the present day by this project or historians for Clan MacPherson.  DNA testing in the Macpherson DNA Project has shown a clear CORE within Haplogroup R1b L21>L1335>L1065closely matching the "Scots Modal Haplotype." The current MacPherson Clan Chief belongs to Haplogroup R1b>L1065 as do other cousins of his that represent the MacPherson chiefly line of "John of Nuide."  No genetic connection between the Y-DNA Macpherson lines (R1b L21 CORE or otherwise) and the Y-DNA Gillespie lines has been found.  Gillespies are not genetic Macphersons along the direct male lines.

Although there are many Gillespies that have joined Clan Macpherson in NorthAmerican, that is not the case in Scotland.

FAMILY FINDER AUTOSOMAL DNA TEST RESULTS - There is no option provided by this FTDNA website to post FF matches that can beviewed by the public. FF matches are shown only to project administrators and individual testees.  FF testees do not have to join their kit to the Gillespie DNA Project to view FF matches that claim Gillespie ancestors. Below,in each of the haplgroups, we have listed the number of FF kits that belong to the Gillespie DNA Project along with their ancestral Gillespie line. We have added the haplogroup/SNP to the Gillespie surname in the surname list for each of our FF testees. It is important to know the haplogroup and terminal SNP of the Gillespie ancestor to determine if FF matches claiming Gillespie ancestors actually belong to the same family. FF testees may find that they are FF matches to testees claiming Gillespie ancestors, but those Gillespie ancestors might belong to a completely different haplogroup. What this means is that the FF match is not through their individual Gillespie family lines, but through different shared ancestral surnames.

BELOW ARE LINKS FOR HAPLOGROUP INFORMATION FOR THE VARIOUS GILLESPIE DNA GROUPS.
Our Gillespies belong to Y-DNA Haplogroups E, G, N, I and R.
