Haplogroup G-L497 Y-DNA Project - Background




This project was launched in December, 2013, for members within the L497 subgroup of Haplogroup G to find others and to compare Y-DNA test results and paternal origins for relatedness. A major goal is to find new subgroups (or branches) which, in turn, explain our ancestors' migrations, based on who comprises each branch.  

You are welcome to join this project if you are within the G-haplogroup (M201+) and have the STR marker value DYS388=13, or a positive result for any of the following G-SNPs: L497, CTS9737, Z725, CTS11352, Z726, CTS6796, CTS4803, L43, L42:

To join this project,  go to your FTDNA home page, click on Projects/Join in the blue bar at the top of the page Then scroll down to  Y-DNA HAPLOGROUP PROJECTS and click on G(12) Then select G-L497-YDNA, click the orange JOIN button, and follow the instructions from there  Your YDNA-G test results will be evaluated and categorized in the project roster, and you will receive a Welcome Letter within a few days.

Important: Please note that in the Project Roster your actual haplogroup category is provided at the far left of the roster page in horizontal color-shaded rows. To find this information, go to “Y-DNA Results,” select “classic” and reset the page size to1600. Then use the browser Find function to search for your FTDNA kit# or name. From the row of your name, scroll up the page until you find the nearest color-shaded horizontal row. Your Haplogroup-G subgroup is shown at the far left of that color-shaded row. For example: G2a2b2a1b…L497+ and not tested for all known subgroups.  Suggestions for additional SNP testing in your subgroup are shown as "Recommended:" or "Rec:" 


If you are in a "predicted" SNP sub-group, such as "Predicted Z726," the prediction is based on either your STR marker values or a confirmed SNP test result from a family member, or in some cases on a very close match to another project member with an SNP test result. However, aside from those exceptions, confirmation of your SNP status requires an actual SNP test result.  Information on ordering SNP tests is provided below.  


Also: the red or green lettering (such as G or G2a3b1a) in what is called the"Haplogroup" column to the right of your name on the roster page is an outdated classification that we do not use in the G-L497 project.Please do not use the information in the “Haplogroup” column to identify your YDNA category in the G-L497 project. Instead, use the subgroup definitions that appear  in the horizontal color-shaded rows of the project roster as described above.


To order an individual SNP test the cost is $39. From your FTDNA home page, click on the orange Order An Upgrade button, then choose Advanced Tests (NOT Advanced SNP tests) Then as the Test Type choose SNP, and enter the SNP name (such as Z725) to the right and hit the Find button. Then add this SNP to the shopping cart and check out for payment.  [You will be notified by FTDNA when your SNP test result is complete, generally within 3-4 weeks. You may also wish to e-mail the Project Administrator when your SNP test result is returned.]
