Autosomal DNA Innovation
Family Tree DNA (FTDNA) has transitioned its autosomal DNA testing platform (referred to as the Family Finder Test) from traditional microarray chip technology to the more advanced, high-coverage Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) — increasing the read capacity from roughly 700,000 specific genetic markers to approximately 280 million base pairs—an increase in coverage from 0.02% to about 9% of the human genome. This technological upgrade is positioned to deliver increased precision and consistency with a vast data foundation designed to accommodate future advanced matching tools, genetic phasing, and ancestral discoveries. All new Family Finder Tests are automatically processed using this updated architecture at no additional cost. For those who do not wish to upgrade, their existing microarray Family Finder Test results remain fully valid and active.
