About us

This project researches the genetic genealogy of the Northern Punjab and Jammu & Kashmir region. The Northern Punjab and Jammu-Kashmir Project invites individuals with origins in this region to participate. Our primary objective is to learn more about the origins and demographics of the region's clan and caste communities. We will use genetic evidence such as Y-DNA, mtDNA, and autosomal tests, in combination with traditional family history methods (oral history and records) in order to accomplish this. --- Requirements for Joining --- Prospective members must satisfy both of these requirements to join our project. 1. DNA Test Results: The projects requires that members have some form of test results, whether it be autosomal transfer results or mtDNA, Y-DNA, or autosomal results from FamilyTreeDNA. 2. Ancestral Connections: Individuals should have family connections or ancestral origins in the greater Punjab and Jammu-Kashmir area, especially in the following places: * the Mirpur District (including Mirpur, Chakswari, Islamgarh, Dadyal, Kotli, and Bhimber) * the Pothohar plateau (including Attock, Rawalpindi, Gujar Khan, Chakwal, and Jhelum) * the Punjab (especially northern areas, notably Gujrat) * Jammu * the Valley of Kashmir We also extend a warm welcome to diaspora/migrant communities associated with this region.
