About us
McCormack or McCormick is a surname that originated in Scotland and/or Ireland. Spelling variations include McCormick, McCormack, McCormac, MacCormack, MacCormick, MacCormaic, Carmack, Cormack, and others. The surname likely comes from the first name of the original bearer. A person whose father was named Cormac would identify as Mac (i.e. "son of") Cormac. The combination Mac Cormac was probably continued as the family name by subsequent generations as surnames came into more general use. Scribes writing down what they heard as the surname likely introduced the spelling variations.
Michael McCormick joined as an admin in 2025. He manages subgrouping and test funding, made possible through generous donations of our members. All McCormick and variant males are eligible to apply to the group for a free Y-37 DNA test, or upgrade from a lower level to Y-37. Michael is helping fund upgrades to Big Y-700 if you share his subgroup.

Former administrators: Marianne Granoff founded the McCormick/McCormack surname group on FamilyTreeDNA in September 2012, and served as admin for 13 years before transitioning the group to new leadership in 2025. Her interest arose from her husband's maternal connection to the surname. Thanks to your testing and her work, our group identified approximately 20 distinct McCormick families (not sharing a paternal ancestor in surname-time).
