I1 Z17954 [xDF29] YDNA Project

About us

By re-processing and analysing Y-genome and Whole Genome test results, between 2010 and 2020, this Project discovered dozens of new A-series SNPs.

The goal set by William Hartley was to discover new SNPs and Branches that lie between I1-M253 and the DF29 Branch. The main Branches are I1-M253 > CTS12768/M1182, and > Z17954

The Project STR Results Table shows the new SNPs and Branches discovered, so far, and forms a I1-M253 > Z17954 Tree

Early Discoveries of SNPs

All we had to go by in 2004 to 2012 were a handful of useful SNPs that we placed into a very small I1-M253 Tree, namely M253, DF29, Z131 ...

M253 Cinnioglu et al 2004, Rootsi et al 2004, Athey et al 2005, Karlsson et al 2006

Added M72 to tree 8 June 2007

Added P109 to tree on 4 May 2008 P = Michael Hammer, Ph.D. of University of Arizona

Added L22/S142 to tree on 22 December 2008

L = Thomas Krahn, MSC (Dipl. Ing.) of Family Tree DNA's Genomics Research Center; snps named in honor of the late Leo Little; S = James F. Wilson, D.Phil. at Edinburgh University

Added L205/S239, L258/S335, L287/S240, L300/S241, L338 to tree 8 February 2011

Added Z58/S244, Z138/S296  and Z63/S243 to tree on 21 December 2011

Z = G. Magoon, Richard Rocca, David F. Reynolds, Bonnie Schrack, Peter M. Op den Velde Boots, and an anonymous individual, independent researchers of 1000 Genomes Project data including YFull Team, William Hartley, and Thomas Krahn, MSc (Dipl.-Ing.) of Family Tree DNA's Genomics Research Center, with support from the DNA-Forums.org genetic genealogy community

Added Z59/S246, Z73/S247, Z139, Z140/S440, Z141 to tree 15 February 2012

Added DF29/S438, L573, L803, Z131, Z382 to tree 26/27 April 2012

DF = anonymous researcher using publicly available full-genome-sequence data, including 1000 Genomes Project data; named in honor of the DNA-Forums.org genetic genealogy community.

”The goal of this Project has been achieved !! “

Where we once knew very little about that part of the I1-M253 Tree, we now know a great deal.

Owing to the success of the I1-Z17954 [xDF29] Project, we now have dozens of new A-series SNPs that populate the Z17954 Branches.

However, the focus now is on discovering SNPs that lie in a genealogical time-frame, ie, the past 500 years. And some Z17954 Branch groups have already had success ...
