About us
The Cisneros Surname Project unites individuals who share the Cisneros name or its variations, including de Cisneros, Cisnero, Sisneros, and Zisneros, to study the surname’s history, diversity, and genetic origins. Using Y-DNA testing combined with traditional genealogical research, our goal is to map the different paternal lines that carry the Cisneros name, whether or not they are related to each other.
Through this research, we aim to:
- Identify Cisneros lineages that share a common ancestor.
- Document separate Cisneros lines that are genetically unrelated but share the surname through independent origins.
- Trace each lineage back to its earliest known geographic and historical roots.
- Build a comprehensive resource for Cisneros genealogy and DNA findings.

Our work has shown that the surname does not come from a single origin. Instead, it has likely emerged in multiple regions and eras, sometimes from the town of Cisneros in Palencia, Spain, and other times through unrelated naming events in different areas.
The success of this project depends on Cisneros men participating in Y-DNA testing. Each new test result adds to our understanding of how the surname developed, spread, and evolved.
We also provide support for members through shared historical research, DNA interpretation, and collaborative family tree work. As the project grows, we plan to use donated funds to sponsor eligible individuals for Y-DNA testing, allowing us to explore more branches and uncover more stories within the Cisneros surname.
By joining the Cisneros Surname Project, you contribute to a collective effort to reveal the true complexity of the Cisneros name, a history shaped by both shared ancestry and diverse, unrelated origins.
