About us
Our Y-DNA results for the Cisneros Surname Project are displayed on the FamilyTreeDNA website in both Classic and Colorized formats. These results are grouped into “Lineages” based on predicted relationships determined by each member’s genetic profile. The Colorized version highlights changes, or mutations, for each marker compared to the mode, while the Classic version shows the numbers without color coding. These mutations help identify not only which Cisneros members belong to the same lineage, but also the distinct branches within that lineage.
It is important to note that not all Cisneros lineages are related to each other. The surname has multiple origins, meaning some groups within the project share a common paternal ancestor, while others represent entirely separate lines that developed the Cisneros name independently.

Results are organized into several categories:
- Haplogroup: Results are organized by haplogroup, which indicates deep ancestral origins thousands of years in the past.
- Lineage: Men who have a Y-DNA match in at least 25, 37, 67, or 111 markers are grouped within the same lineage. The Y-DNA-37 test is typically considered the entry-level test for identifying matches with a common ancestor within a genealogically relevant timeframe.
- Possibly Same Lineage: Men with the Cisneros surname who match a lineage closely at 12 markers may be considered potential matches. While 12 markers alone are not enough to confirm a common ancestor, having the Cisneros surname suggests a strong possibility. Additionally, Cisneros men who fall just outside the range to be part of a lineage might be categorized here, as upgrading to more markers could reveal a match in the future.
- No Match Yet in the Project: Members who currently do not match anyone else in the Cisneros Surname Project are placed in this group. As more men test, those who match another member at 25 markers or higher will be assigned to a new lineage within their haplogroup.
- Mutation Color Coding: Mutations, or differences, from each haplogroup profile are highlighted using color coding.
These results help participants understand where they fit within the broader Cisneros surname study, whether their line is connected to other tested members, or if it represents a unique and unrelated branch. Each new participant strengthens our ability to map the complex history of the Cisneros name.
