WELCOME to the Bowie surname DNA project!

Good genealogy in the modern age includes a collaborative effort to find both documentary and DNA support for both long held family history beliefs and newly uncovered family connections and history. Neither documents nor DNA alone provide proof, but when used together they can strenghten our long sought conclusions.

Y DNA

Surname projects focus on Y chromosome DNA. Since both Y DNA and the surname are passed down from father to son relatively unchanged over the centuries, the Y DNA markers become an ID tag for each surname lineage.

We subgroup the project members by matching Y DNA markers (lineages) to facilitate family history research and a better understanding of the Bowie surname and its variants. This process requires that the male Y DNA tester have the Bowie surname or a spelling variant of it.

Although less of a focus here, we also accept Family Finder autosomal DNA results from both men and women with Bowie in their family history. Since autosomal DNA changes rapidly through the centuries, we only accept autosomal DNA when the Bowie ancestor lived during the previous ten generations.

NB: The Bowie Genealogy Facebook group (300+ members strong), run by another individual, is set to 'Public', so both members and non-members can read posts. Please do not post anyone else's DNA results obtained from FTDNA match information in the Facebook group in a way that identifies them without their permission. Thanks!
