Y-DNA, mtDNA & Autosomal DNA Results are shown below.  Autosomal DNA (Family Finder &/or AncestryDNA) (i.e., atDNA) lines are posted once there is an atDNA match between at least two members of our project with an identified and confirmed common ancestor.  Information on living people is kept private unless we obtain express written permission from that person to list their information. Both male and female descendants of ancestors studied in this project are welcome and encouraged to join our project.

Note:  Confirmed Y-DNA Haplogroup R-M222, Confirmed Subclade R-BY18201 (Branch of R-A1742) .  Big-Y DNA test on this Davis paternal line is available. Click here to see the Davis surname placement on The Big Tree:R-A1742.  Kit# 256055 mtDNA Haplogroup H1au1a.  Kit #'s 256055 & 338987 are also members of the Davis surname Y-DNA Project as well as the McAnally surname Y-DNA Project.  Paper trail ends with John Davis.  This Davis Y-DNA paternal line very closely matches the McAnally surname (110/111-Marker Y-DNA Match to descendants of Charles McAnally born 1685, Scotland), and Big-Y DNA testing shows that this Davis paternal line will merge at some point with the McAnally surname; however, the exact connection point is not yet known.    Other close matching surnames on this paternal line include McNally, Brown, Evans, Radar, Gaither, Graham, Gormley, etc...  The Graham Y-DNA paternal line is a brother twig to the McAnally/Davis Y-DNA paternal line, and it is believed that they will ultimately connect with the "Gormley" surname.  Big-Y DNA testing is currently needed on the Gormley surname so that they can be placed on the Big Tree.  All of the different surnames on this paternal line are believed to be the descendants of Niall of the Nine Hostages and the High Kings of Ireland.  This paternal line is one of the largest paternal lines in the world with hundreds of different surnames.  The Irish did not begin taking surnames until sometime around the 16th century; therefore, it is very common for an Irish paternal line to have numerous surnames. As more people take the Big-Y test, it will become more clear as to where all of the different surnames on this paternal line will merge and connect, so be sure to check the The Big Tree for updates.  There are several Autosomal DNA (Family Finder) Kits in the project that matches this Davis paternal line and is available for DNA cousin-in-common & matrix comparisons.  Also, Y-DNA is needed for comparison from other "Davis" family paternal lines in the Blount County, AL and surrounding areas.  111-Marker Y-DNA & Big-Y test is recommended for this paternal line.

------6 Kit# 48686 Y-DNA (67-Marker)

Note:  Paper trail ends with Daniel Davis.  Daniel married his wife Alzirah Galbraith in Wayne County, TN in 1848.  It is believed that Daniel may have been born in Wayne County, TN.  His parents are not known.  Kit# 48686 is a 64/67 Y-DNA match with John Davis's family from Blount County, AL shown above as well as a 64/67 Y-DNA match with Willis Davis McAnally's family shown below.  John Davis's family from Blount County, AL shown above is this person's closest Y-DNA match that carries the surname DAVIS.  Kit# 48686's Y-DNA is also 3 to 4 steps off from the Graham family shown below and has a mutation of "8" on DYS590 that is identical to the Graham's.  Additional DNA data is needed before it can be determined whether this paternal line will connect with the R-A1742 McAnally/Davis & Graham subclade family, or if perhaps their connection point may be with a different subclade of R-M222 that is a bit further away on The Big Tree.  Families with the surname DAVIS who lived in Wayne County, TN in 1840 have taken Y-DNA tests, and the ones tested thus far do not match Kit#48686 above.  The only Davis family from Wayne County, TN that has not yet taken the Y-DNA are those who descend from John Davis (Abt. 1800, Orange County, TN - 1853, Wayne County, TN) and his wife Margaret (maiden name unknown).  Y-DNA is needed from a direct male descendant of this John Davis who had lived in Wayne County, TN for comparison with Kit# 48686 so that it can be determined if this John Davis was the father of Daniel Davis. Y-DNA is also needed from another direct male descendant of Daniel Davis for Y-DNA mutation comparison with Kit#48686.  111-Marker Y-DNA & Big-Y test is recommended for this paternal line.  Additionally, we are in need of a few more descendants Daniel Davis and Alzirah Galbraith with autosomal DNA to join this project for DNA cousin-in-common and matrix comparisons.

----------10 Kit# B143255 Autosomal DNA (Family Finder)

Note:   Confirmed Y-DNA Haplogroup R-M222, Confirmed Subclade R-BY18201 (Branch of R-A1742).  A Big-Y test on this McAnally paternal line is available for comparison.  Click here to see the McAnally surname placement on The Big Tree:R-A1742.  Paper trail of Kit # B143255 ends with William Bartlett "Barto" McAnally.  Postulated father of Barto is Bartlett McAnally based on common name and location. Postulated father of Bartlett McAnally is John McAnally, Jr. (Red River, TX).  Y-DNA of a descendant of Bartlett McAnally confirms that Bartlett was NOT the son of Elijah McAnally, Sr. who migrated to Blount County, Alabama.  Descendants of Elijah McAnally, Sr. carry a "24" mutation on Y-DNA marker #481 that the descendant of Bartlett McAnally does not carry proving that Elijah McAnally, Sr. cannot be his father.  Therefore, Bartlett McAnally was most likely the son of Elijah McAnally, Sr.'s postulated brother, John McAnally, Jr., who migrated from Hawkins, TN to Red River, TX.  Y-DNA of the descendant of Bartlett McAnally and Y-DNA of a descendant of William McAnally (1797, TN - 1880, Franklin County, IN)(husband of Nancy Poe McAnally) are perfect matches to the Y-DNA of John Davis's descendants shown above.  A possibility exists that John Davis and William McAnally "may" have been brothers of Bartlett McAnally, but this has not yet been confirmed and more research is needed.  It has been confirmed with Y-DNA and Big-Y DNA that the Davis paternal line will merge at some point with the McAnally paternal line.  The Graham family paternal line (shown below) is a brother twig to the McAnally family paternal line.   111-Marker Y-DNA & Big-Y test is recommended for this paternal line.

-----5 Kit# 524192 Y-DNA (111-Marker) (Big-Y), & Autosomal DNA (Family Finder & AncestryDNA)

Note:  Confirmed Y-DNA Haplogroup R-M222, Confirmed Subclade R-BY18201 (Branch of R-A1742) .    Paper trail of Kit# 524192 ends with Willis Davis McAnally.  Y-DNA test results confirm that this paternal line descends from Charles McAnally (born 1685, Scotland). There will be about 3 generations between Willis Davis McAnally and Charles McAnally from Scotland. Willis Davis McAnally had at least one brother named Elisha R. McAnally (born about 1826, TN) who was enumerated a few doors up from Willis on his 1850 US Federal Census in Attala, MS.  Another possible brother of Willis Davis McAnally may have been John E. McAnally (Abt. 1811, VA - Aft. 1860, Nacogdoches County, TX).  On the 1860 US Federal Census, Willis can be located in Nacogdoches County, TX living in Beat 3 and John E. McAnally can be located fairly close to him living in Beat 4.  Close autosomal DNA matches between this Kit# and descendants of John E. McAnally seems to suggest a very high likelihood that John E. McAnally was closely related to Willis Davis McAnally.  Willis's location in Attala, MS in 1850 places him close to Leake County, MS as these two counties border each other.  A man named Charles McAnally (born about 1785, age range 50-59) can be located on the 1840 US Federal Census living in Leake County, MS who was of the age that he could have possibly been the father of Willis Davis McAnally.  Willis Davis McAnally's father is postulated to be this Charles McAnally from Leake County, MS based on common surname, age, and his nearest location to Willis Davis McAnally.  Many family trees show this Charles McAnally as having been previously located in Wayne County, Tennessee on the 1830 US Federal Census and show him as being the son of John McAnally (Abt. 1752, Augusta County, VA - 1836, Lawrence County, TN) and Anna Stone.  If this is correct, then Willis Davis McAnally would have been born in Lawrence County, TN.  However, additional research is needed to ensure that the Charles McAnally from Leake County, MS was indeed the exact same person as the one who had previously lived in Wayne County, TN because there was another man also named Charles McAnally with the same age range who had lived in Roane County, TN in 1830.  Therefore, it is not yet clear as to whether the Charles McAnally from Leake County, TN was the one who had previously lived in Wayne County, TN or the one who had lived in Roane County, TN. It is also important to note that FindAGrave.com and several family trees on Ancestry.com list Willis's place of birth as Giles County, Tennesse; however, no records have been located yet proving this information to be correct.  If records are ever located proving Willis's place of birth as having been in Giles County, TN then his postulated father would have to be changed to Jesse McAnally (Abt. 1785, Unknown).  This Jesse McAnally can be located on the 1820 US Federal Census living in Pulaski, Giles County, TN, and he was the only McAnally that has been found so far living in that county at the time that Willis was born.  This Jesse McAnally is still unconnected and his parents are not yet known. Additional descendants of Willis Davis McAnally and Matilda Flowers are needed to join the project for autosomal DNA comparisons.  111-Marker Y-DNA & Big-Y test is recommended for this paternal line.

Note:  Possible father of Drury W. Wall, Sr. (shown with name misspelled and transcribed incorrectly as "Drusey Wall" on the 1830 US Federal Census in Union County, SC) and William Bucker Wall(s) may have been Edward Wall who can be located on the 1810 US Federal Census in Lincoln County, North Carolina.  Census records show that their father was born in Virginia and his children were born in North Carolina.  Their father may have been the male age 80-89 (born abt. 1745) living in William Buckner Wall(s) household on his 1830 US Federal Census in Union County, SC.  This family migrated from Virginia to North Carolina and then to Union County, South Carolina where they lived for several years and then later migrated again to Alabama and Mississippi.  Nancy Wall Vaughn (wife of Hartwell Vaughn from Union County, SC who settled in Blount and then Cherokee County, AL) also appears to have been related to Drury W. Wall, Sr. and William Buckner Wall(s) and may have been their sister.  Y-DNA is needed from a direct male descendant of either Drury W. Wall, Sr. or William Buckner Wall(s).  67-Marker Y-DNA test is recommended for this paternal line.

Hopper/Powell/Edwards/Mayfield/Keef/Neal/Kilby/Kilroy/Brown/Howard/Hooper, etc... - NC, SC, GA and Blount, Etowah, St. Clair, Winston, Cullman & Morgan Counties, AL

Note: Confirmed Y-DNA Haplogroup is R-L21.  This family's paternal line Y-DNA closely matches people with the surname Hopper as well as people with the surname Powell. These two surnames will merge at some point on this paternal line, but it is not yet clear as to exactly where that merge will occur.  There are several more Hopper & Powell Y-DNA Kits that have not yet joined the project that confirms the Hopper/Powell paternal line.  Other surnames confirmed and expected to be on this paternal line include Edwards, Keef, Mayfield, Brown, Neal, Hooper, Howard, Kilby, Kilroy, etc... Information will be posted about these lines as more of this family joins the project.  View the Hopper/Powell Y-DNA Spreadsheet to see Y-DNA marker numbers of identified and confirmed descendants of this paternal line, including those who have not yet joined the project.  For optimal viewing of the spreadsheet, download and open it in Microsoft Excel.  67-Marker Y-DNA test or higher is recommended for this paternal line.

Note:  Y-DNA confirms that Lawson Hopper was a biological "Hopper."  Paper trail ends with Lawson Hopper.  Lawson Hopper's parents "may" have been John Hopper and Sarah (maiden name possibly Hobbs), but this has not yet been confirmed.  Need Y-DNA in this project from other male descendants of Lawson Hopper as well as autosomal DNA from male or female descendants of Lawson Hopper for Y-DNA mutation comparisons and Autosomal DNA comparisons.  We also need Y-DNA and autosomal DNA in this project from Hopper descendants with a solid paper trail to George Hopper (husband of Hannah Jones) who migrated to Blount County, Alabama. Additionally, and we need Y-DNA and autosomal DNA from a male Hopper descendant with a solid paper trail to Blagrove Hopper, Sr. (Abt. 1695 - Richmond, VA - 29 Apr 1768, Fauquier Co., VA).

Note:  This is the main Hopper family paternal line.  All other Hopper & Powell's in this project should connect with this Hopper family paternal line.  Descendants of William Hopper (husband of Elizabeth Dugger), are a perfect 67/67 Y-DNA match with other Hopper & Powell families.  Kit#'s 37091, 42932, B337770 and 611492 are also descendants of William Hopper and wife, Elizabeth Dugger whose father has been confirmed with DNA to have been Lewis Hopper (Abt. 1775, Salisbury, Rockingham Co., NC - Aft. 1840, Lincoln County, TN).  In addition to DNA, this connection is also based on William Hopper's 1830 US Federal Census showing him to be enumerated on pg 39 with John Hopper and Nathaniel Hopper (sons of Lewis Hopper) living nearby, and on William Hopper's 1840 US Federal Census showing him enumerated directly next door to H. James Hopper (son of Lewis Hopper).  Many family trees connect this William Hopper as the son of John Lawson Hopper; however, our project has not found any evidence or DNA to support this theory.  Based on the perfect 67/67 Y-DNA on this paternal line, it is expected that Abraham W. Powell's group and Gillum Hopper's group (shown below) will connect somewhere fairly close to this paternal line.

---------9 Kit# 720471 Y-DNA (37-Marker) & Autosomal DNA (Family Finder)

Note:  Kit# 720471, descendant of Samuel Hopper, is a near perfect 36/37 marker Y-DNA match (1 step) with other Hopper, Powell & Neal families.  Kit# 720471 has an identifying mutation of "26" on his Y-DNA marker #DYS447 that is unique only to his Hopper family paternal line.  It is not yet clear as to which of his Kilby or Hopper ancestors that he inherited this mutation from.  Additional Y-DNA from other male descendants higher up on this paternal line is needed for Y-DNA mutation comparisons.

The first issue on Samuel Hopper's paternal line is correctly identifying the father of James Henry Kilby (Hopper).  Most trees at Ancestry.com have listed James Henry Kilby's father as Henry Newton Hooper (spelled with two o's).  This is NOT correct as the Y-DNA of a descendant of that Henry Newton Hooper's ancestor, Absolom Hooper, does NOT match Kit# 720471.  Y-DNA & documentation confirms that James Henry Kilby (Hopper) was the son of Henry HOPPER and the grandson of Samuel Hopper. In addition to the Y-DNA confirmation, the paper trail also confirms that Henry HOPPER was the father of James Henry Kilby.  Henry Hopper's 1st wife was Rebecca Melinda Keener.  After the death of his first wife, Henry then had several children with Mary Malinda Kilby whom he never married.  These children carried their mother's maiden "Kilby," and James Henry Kilby was one of these children.  The Social Security Application & Claims Index of James's brother, George Washington Kilby, lists his parents names as "Henry HOPPER" and "Malinda Kilby."  Also, James Henry Kilby (Hopper) can be located on the 1880 US Federal Census on pg 11 in Rabun County, GA living in the household with his mother whose marital status was listed as "Single," and Henry Hopper's son, Marcus L. Hopper (Jame's half-brother), was enumerated on the same page living just a few doors up from James's mother, Mary Malinda Kilby.

The next issue on this paternal is correctly identifying the father of Samuel Hopper (Abt. 1772, Burke County, NC - 1857, Rabun County, GA).  Y-DNA indicates that this paternal line should connect somewhere very close to the Hopper's who had lived in Rowan County, NC in the mid 1700's.  Rowan County was a very large area of land in the mid 1700's that was later divided up into numerous different counties including Burke, Gilford, Randolph, Rockingham, etc...  During that time, the counties were just being established and county line boundaries were rapidly changing making it very difficult for the Hopper family to trace their family lines back to the correct ancestors.  Evidence for Samuel's place of birth being in Burke County, NC as well as evidence for his travels through Giles County, TN, can be located in the book History of Benton, Washington, Carroll, Madison, Crawford, Franklin, and Sebastian Counties, Arkansas published by The Goodspeed Publishing Co. in Chicago, IL in 1889.  This book was written during the lifetime of Samuel's son, Zachariah Hopper, whose family history is recorded in the book, and it is a "primary" source of information that is considered to be very reliable.  Samuel's paper trail seems to back up the information found in this book as he can be located on the 1820 US Federal Census, pg 21, living in Pulaski, Giles County, TN.  Samuel's name on this record at Ancestry.com is transcribed in error as "Samuel Hoppin."  Samuel's name is very faded on the original image of this record; however, opening the image in a photo editing program and changing the brightness and contrast will allow you to see that the correct spelling of the name is "Samuel Hopper."  Samuel had at least one brother named John Hopper (born abt. 1785) who can be located on pg 5 of this same census record in Pulaski, Giles County, TN.  Next, we trace Samuel's paper trail back to his place of birth listed in the book as having been in Burke County, NC.  Burke County, NC did not exist at the time that Samuel was born.  It was created a few years after Samuel was born on 8 Apr 1777 from Rowan County, NC.  Therefore, Samuel's correct place of birth was most likely in the area of Rowan County, NC that was later changed to Burke County, NC, and Samuel was most likely raised primarily in Burke County, NC.  At least two of the sons of William Hopper, Sr. (Abt. 1681, Chowan, NC - Unknown date, NC) lived in Burke County, NC and can be located there on the 1790 US Federal Census, namely Charles Hopper (1732, NC - Aft. 1820, Burke County, NC) and his brother, George Hopper.  Another son named Thomas Hopper "may" have also lived there.  All three of these men were of the age that they could have possibly been the father of Samuel Hopper.  Not much is known about George and Thomas, but they "may" have been the ones who later moved on to Wofford's Settlement in GA; however, that is not yet confirmed.  Charles Hopper's line is documented in the book The Hopper Family written by Leona Hopper Newbill and published in 1966.  In this book, the author lists the names of Charles's children as "JASPER, WILLIAM, CHARLES, ZACHARIAH, ELIZABETH, THOMAS, AND JOHN."

Current Working Theory:  No subsequent documentation or census records can be located for Charles's son, John Hopper.  The book The Hopper Family was published in 1966; and therefore, it is only a "secondary" source of information and not a "primary" source.  Could the researcher and author of the book have accidentally failed to locate Charles's son, John Hopper, living in Giles County, TN on the 1820 US Federal Census, and as a result, missed finding Samuel Hopper thus keeping Samuel's name from being listed in the book as one of the children of Charles Hopper?  It is very interesting to note that Samuel Hopper gave his children many of the exact same names that Charles Hopper had given to his children, namely Charles, Jasper, Zachariah, Thomas and John.  Also, the book mentions that several of Charles's children went to California (possibly during the gold rush) and Samuel's son, Zachariah, did the same thing at around the exact same time period.  Based on location, common family names, Charles having an undocumented son named John, Samuel having a brother named John, and Y-DNA indicating a close connection of this paternal line with the Hopper's from Rowan County, NC, Samuel Hopper's father is postulated to be Charles Hopper (Abt. 1732, NC - Aft. 1820, Burke County, NC) unless or until new evidence is ever located in the future that might prove otherwise.

It is important to note that there appears to be two completely different men named Samuel Hopper who were both from North Carolina and were close in age.  The Samuel Hopper who married Elizabeth Murphey in Caswell, NC in 1801 does not appear to be the same Samuel Hopper as the one who married Sarah McKinney and moved to Rabun County, GA.  The 1784 NC State Census proves that Samuel Hopper from Caswell, NC was the son of James Hopper whose line traces back to Culpeper County, VA.  That is not consistent with Y-DNA that is indicating a closer connection with the Hopper's from Rowan County, NC, and no evidence has ever been located proving that Samuel Hopper from Rabun County, GA ever lived in or traveled through Caswell County, NC.  Need Y-DNA and autosomal DNA from other Hopper male descendants of Charles Hopper for DNA comparison.

Note:  Y-DNA confirms that Gillum (John Brown) Hopper, Sr. was a biological "Hopper."  Paper trail ends with Gillum (John Brown) Hopper, Sr.  Several theories exist about the possible father of Gillum (John Brown) Hopper, Sr., but none of these theories have yet to be proven and/or confirmed. Triangulated autosomal DNA indicates that Gillum's mother was Nancy Gilley (possible full name Anna Nancy Gilley) daughter of Francis Gilley, Sr. and his wife, Elizabeth (maiden name unknown) and sister of Charles Gilley, Sr.  Gillum had at least one brother named Rolly Hopper, and at least one half-brother named Moses Edwards-Hopper (mother was an Edwards).  Need Y-DNA and autosomal DNA from a different male descendant of Gillum (John Brown) Hopper, Sr. (other than James Townsend Hopper, Sr.'s paternal line) for Y-DNA mutation comparisons.  Gillum's paternal line has some identifying mutations.  However, it is possible that Y-DNA mutations on the test participants' may have occurred further down the line with grandchildren or great-grandchildren of Gillum (John Brown) Hopper, Sr., and yet Gillum (John Brown) Hopper, Sr. himself may or may not have had any of these mutations; therefore, another Y-DNA test from a descendant of one of the brothers of James Townsend Hopper Sr. is highly recommended for Y-DNA mutation comparison. Additionally, we need participants with Y-DNA and autosomal DNA from descendants of Gillum's brothers, Rolly Hopper and Moses Edwards-Hopper to join the project.  We also need Y-DNA and autosomal DNA in this project from Hopper descendants with a solid paper trail to Thomas Hopper (b. 1745, VA - d. 1840 Oglethorpe County, GA) who appears by autosomal DNA to have "possibly" been closely related to Gillum (John Brown) Hopper, Sr..  Also, several descendants of Gillum (John Brown) Hopper, Sr. have close predicted 4th cousin autosomal DNA matches with descendants of Abraham W. Powell shown below (whose Y-DNA matches the Hopper surname) indicating that the Powell's are closely related on their "paternal" line to the descendants of Gillum (John Brown) Hopper, Sr..  This paternal line is very complex.  It will take a group effort, and we will need both Y-DNA and autosomal DNA from multiple descendants of different children of Gillum (John Brown) Hopper. Sr. as well as from descendants of Rolly Hopper, Moses Edwards-Hopper, and Abraham W. Powell to solve it.

Note:  Paper trail ends with Abraham W. Powell.  Abraham (the elder) Powell is postulated to be the father of Abraham W. Powell based solely on location, but that is not confirmed.  Abraham W. Powell's paternal line is confirmed with the paper trail and Y-DNA from multiple different Abraham W. Powell descendants who are not yet members of this project (but whose Y-DNA matches Hopper descendants who are members of this project) as well as confirmed with autosomal DNA of his descendants who are members of this project. Y-DNA from a male Powell descendant of Abraham W. Powell is needed in this project as well as autosomal DNA from male or female descendants from different family lines of Abraham W. Powell (those other than Miles "Duck" Powell).

This project can confirm that James Powell and Rebecca Bynum Powell were NOT the parents of Abraham W. Powell.  Descendant's of James Powell have taken Y-DNA tests and their Y-DNA markers do NOT match the Y-DNA markers of the descendants of Abraham W. Powell making it impossible for James Powell to have been the father of Abraham W. Powell.  Also, Y-DNA from descendants of Robert Powell do NOT match the Y-DNA of descendants of Abraham W. Powell making it impossible for him to have been the father of Abraham W. Powell.  That leaves only Abraham (the elder) Powell with the surname "Powell" who could "possibly" be the father of Abraham W. Powell.

Y-DNA of multiple different descendants of Abraham W. Powell indicates that the "Powell" paternal line will ultimately merge at some point with the "Hopper" paternal line.  Abraham W. Powell lived near Gillum (John Brown) Hopper, Sr., shown above, and his half-brother, Moses Edwards-Hopper in Pendleton, SC in the early 1800's. The Powell's also took the same migration path as Gillum (John Brown) Hopper's uncle, Charles Gilley, Sr..  Several descendants of Abraham W. Powell have close predicted 4th cousin autosomal DNA matches with descendants of Gillum (John Brown) Hopper, Sr. indicating that they are closely related on their "paternal" line.

At the same time, Autosomal DNA and census records seem to indicate that Abraham W. Powell may have been related to Pleasant Powell (b. abt 1800, Pendleton Dist., SC, d. bef. 1880, NC, husband of Winiford Wood) who had lived near him and "may" have been his brother.  We need Y-DNA from a male Powell descendant as well as autosomal DNA from male or female Powell descendants with a solid paper trail to Pleasant Powell to join the project so that we can determine whether Pleasant Powell was biologically related to Abraham W. Powell on his "paternal" line.  Pleasant Powell's son, John Byrd Powell, can be found on census records frequently living near Abraham W. Powell's son, Miles "Duck" Powell, and they appear by the records to be closely related.  We also need Y-DNA and autosomal DNA from paternal lines of other postulated sons of Abraham (the elder) Powell including Y-DNA & autosomal DNA from Powell descendants of Jane Davis Powell (b. abt. 1787 in NC or VA - d. aft. 1860, Gilmer County, GA)(Also lived in Warren Co., NC, and Habersham, GA).  Jane Davis Powell was enumerated directly beside Abraham W. Powell on census records and is believed to have been the wife of Abraham W. Powell's possible brother, William Powell (b. est. 1770, NC - d. bef. 1830), and we need Y-DNA and autosomal DNA from someone with a solid paper trail to Abraham W. Powell's possible brother, Joseph Powell (b. abt. 1795, S,C, d. Pickens County, SC).  Until the Y-DNA of these Powell paternal line's are tested, we cannot yet determine when or exactly where the Powell paternal line will merge with the Hopper Paternal line.

Current Working Theory:  It is possible, but not yet confirmed, that Abraham W. Powell's postulated father was Abraham (the elder) Powell who may have been a biological "Hopper" who changed his last name to "Powell."  Several surname changes were occurring in the Hopper family paternal line during this period of time.  It's also possible that Abraham (the elder) Powell "may" have been an older half-brother of Gillum (John Brown) Hopper, Sr., shown above, and that would explain the close predicted 4th cousin autosomal DNA matches between these two families.  If the needed Powell Y-DNA from "possible" Powell brothers of Abraham W. Powell were to turn out to match the Y-DNA of the descendants of Abraham W. Powell, then Abraham (the elder) Powell would be the most likely father based on currently available paper trail records and DNA. However, if the needed Powell Y-DNA were to turn out NOT to match the Y-DNA of descendants of Abraham W. Powell, then we would need to adjust our working theory as Abraham (the elder) Powell would NOT have been his father, making Abraham W. Powell's most likely possible father to be Moses Edwards-Hopper based on his common location with the Powell's in Pendleton Dist., SC and close matching autosomal DNA.  Also, Moses Edwards-Hopper's half-brother, Gillum (John Brown) Hopper, Sr. cannot yet be ruled out as a possible father of Abraham W. Powell as the closest autosomal DNA matches are with his paternal line, but it seems unlikely that he would be the father due to his young age at the time that Abraham W. Powell was born.  If Abraham (the elder) Powell turns out not to be the father of Abraham W. Powell, then autosomal DNA of Abraham W. Powell's descendants would need to be analyzed to determine if it contains any Gilley, Edwards or Campbell family DNA (DNA from the female mother's lines) before it could be determined for certain whether Moses Edwards-Hopper or Gillum (John Brown) Hopper, Sr. could be a possible father of Abraham W. Powell. Also, Y-DNA from descendants of Gillum (John Brown) Hopper, Sr.'s paternal line has mutations that Y-DNA of descendants of Abraham W. Powell do not have. This would typically indicate that Gillum (John Brown) Hopper, Sr. could not have been the father of Abraham W. Powell; however, it has not yet been determined exactly where on Gillum (John Brown) Hopper, Sr.'s paternal line the mutations occurred; and therefore, the mutations could have possibly occurred further down the line with Gillum's grandchildren or great-grandchildren; and therefore, these mutations may not have been on the Y-DNA of the most distant paternal ancestor, Gillum (John Brown) Hopper, Sr..  As a result, at least one or more Y-DNA tests are needed from different sons of Gillum (John Brown) Hopper, Sr. to determine exactly which generation these mutations actually occurred before Gillum (John Brown) Hopper, Sr. could be completely ruled out as a possible father of Abraham W. Powell.

A descendant of James Allen Powell (b. 1810 Pendleton Dist., SC - d. 1891, Monroe Co., TN, husband of Mary Ann "Polly" Cain) has taken the Y-DNA test, but has not yet joined the project.  His Y-DNA matches the Y-DNA of the descendants of Abraham W. Powell and other people with surname "Powell" and "Hopper." A descendant of James Allen Powell who has taken the autosomal DNA test shown below has joined the project and has numerous autosomal DNA matches with descendants of Abraham W. Powell.  If Abraham (the elder) Powell turns out to have been the father of Abraham W. Powell, then James Allen Powell was most likely a younger brother of Abraham W. Powell (or possibly a nephew); on the other hand, if Abraham (the elder) Powell turns out NOT to have been the father of Abraham W. Powell, then James Allen Powell would have most likely been an older son of Abraham W. Powell.  We need Y-DNA and additional autosomal DNA from descendants of James Allen Powell to join this project.

Abraham W. Powell's Y-DNA paternal line is very complex and can only be solved one step at a time with a large group effort.  Solving this paternal line will require both Powell and Hopper families to join and participate in the project and will require both Y-DNA and autosomal DNA from multiple descendants of different children of Abraham W. Powell as well as Y-DNA and autosomal DNA from the family lines of Pleasant Powell, William Powell (husband of Jane Davis Powell), Joseph Powell, Gillum (John Brown) Hopper, Sr., Moses Edwards-Hopper, Rolly Hopper and other Powell and Hopper family descendants.

------6 Kit# B298500 Autosomal DNA (Family Finder & AncestryDNA)

Note:  Paper trail ends with James Allen Powell.  Abraham (the elder) Powell is currently postulated to be the father of James Allen Powell; however, that is subject to change as more of his descendants take DNA tests and join the project allowing us to learn more about the DNA of his Powell family line.    A descendant of James Allen Powell has taken the Y-DNA test, but has not yet joined the project.  His Y-DNA matches the Y-DNA of the descendants of Abraham W. Powell and other people with surname "Powell" and "Hopper," and therefore, James Allen Powell will connect to Abraham W. Powell somewhere on his "Powell" paternal line. Autosomal DNA Kit#200174 (above) has numerous close cousin autosomal DNA matches with descendants of Abraham W. Powell confirming that James Allen Powell's paternal line will connect some where very close to Abraham W. Powell's paternal line possibly as either a younger brother, older son, or nephew.  If Abraham (the elder) Powell turns out to have been the father of Abraham W. Powell, then James Allen Powell was most likely a younger brother of Abraham W. Powell (or possibly his nephew); on the other hand, if Abraham (the elder) Powell turns out NOT to have been the father of Abraham W. Powell, then James Allen Powell would have most likely been an older son of Abraham W. Powell.  We need additional autosomal DNA from descendants of James Allen Powell to join this project for DNA comparison and triangulation to Kit#200174. Y-DNA from a descendant of James Allen Powell is also needed to join the project.

Note:  Paper trail ends with Pleasant Powell.  Abraham (the elder) Powell is postulated to be the father of Pleasant Powell based solely on location, but that is not confirmed. Multiple descendants of Pleasant Powell have autosomal DNA matches with multiple descendants of Abraham W. Powell indicating that he may have been either a full or half brother of Pleasant Powell.  A descendant of Pleasant Powell has taken the autosomal DNA test at 23andme and claims to have a predicted haplogroup that does NOT match the paternal line of Abraham W. Powell indicating that they may have been half-brothers (possibly sharing the same mother, but having different fathers).  The results of this test has not been viewed by the project administrators; and therefore, this cannot yet be confirmed.  However, if this information turns out to be correct, then it's quite possible that Abraham W. Powell may have been the one who had the Hopper father.  Y-DNA is needed from a direct male Powell descendant of Pleasant Powell to confirm his paternal line.  Additional Autosomal DNA participants from different lines of Pleasant Powell is also needed for DNA comparisons.  Additional information can be located in the notes under Abraham W. Powell above.

--------8 Kit# B155363 Autosomal DNA (Family Finder & AncestryDNA)

Note:  Paper trail ends with John H. Powell's widowed mother Jane Powell (maiden name unknown but may have "Davis")(b. abt. 1787, NC or VA - d. aft. 1860, Gilmer County, GA).  William Powell is postulated to be the husband of Jane and the father of John H. Powell based on location and an autosomal AncestryDNA match between Kit# B155363 (descendant of John H. Powell) and Kit #6361 (descendant of Abraham W. Powell).  Abraham (the elder) Powell is postulated to be the father of William Powell based solely on location, but that is not yet confirmed. John H. Powell can be first located on the 1850 US Federal Census, pg 26, in Gilmer County, Georgia, living in the household with his widowed mother Jane Powell and a 10 year old child named Thomas Bearden. A marriage record dated 29 Oct 1811 in Warren County, NC shows a Wm Powell who married Jane Davis.  This record may or may not be the correct marriage record for John H. Powell's widowed mother, Jane Powell; however, this marriage record is where Jane's possible maiden name "Davis" is derived.  On this same 1850 US Federal Census, Abraham W. Powell (shown above) can be located on pg 70, Joshua Powell (husband of Dicey Lowery) can be located on pg 24, and James Riley Powell can be located on pg 185.  On the 1830 US Federal Census, pg 71, in Habersham County, GA, Jane Powell was enumerated directly next door to Abraham W. Powell indicating that they were most likely related.  Jane Powell was too young to have been the mother of Abraham W. Powell, and since she was listed with the surname Powell and shown as widowed on census records, it is believed that she may have been Abraham W. Powell's sister-in-law. Jane's husband (possibly William Powell) was most likely Abraham W. Powell's full or half brother.  Additional Autosomal DNA participants from multiple different family lines of John H. Powell is needed for DNA comparisons and triangulation to confirm the correctness of the autosomal DNA match. Y-DNA is also needed from a direct male descendant of John H. Powell to confirm his paternal line and determine whether John H. Powell's father was Abraham W. Powell's full brother or half brother with different fathers.

Note:  Y-DNA paternal line of John William Neal is a perfect 37/37 marker Y-DNA match (0 steps) to the Hopper/Powell family.  Paper trail ends with John William Neal.  John's mother "may" have been Nancy Ellen Stivers Neal wife of Andrew Neal, but it is not clear yet as to whether either of them were John's biological parents.  We need autosomal DNA (Family Finder and/or AncestryDNA) from a descendant of John William Neal, and we need Y-DNA from at least one more descendant of John William Neal for comparison.  We also need Y-DNA and autosomal DNA from other postulated descendants of Andrew Neal and Nancy Ellen Stivers Neal for DNA comparisons.  Based on location, a possibility exists that John William Neal "may" have been the grandson of William Hopper, Sr. (b. abt. 1728 Culpeper Co., VA - d. 1806, Montgomery Co., KY) and his wife Eleanor (maiden name unknown).  Y-DNA and autosomal DNA is needed from descendants of this William Hopper, Sr. to determine whether or not this is possible.

Note:  Paper trail ends with Millard Fillmore Hopper, and it is not yet clear exactly who his parents were.  There were two different men who were both born in the 1850's and were both named "Millard Fillmore Hopper."  One of these men was the son of Joseph Henry Hopper and his wife, Sarah Blanton. The other man was the son of Uriah Hopper and his wife Emily Kimery.  As of 9-1-17, this Hopper paternal line is still being researched by our project administrators, and we hope to post more information about this Hopper family line in the next few months, so be sure to check back for updates.  In order to solve this Hopper family line, additional autosomal DNA from more descendants of Millard Fillmore Hopper (listed above) is needed for triangulation and DNA cousin in common comparisons to determine whether this Hopper family line has "Blanton" DNA or "Kimery" DNA.

Note:  Confirmed Y-DNA Haplogroup R-M269.  Kit# 15512 Y-DNA (67-Marker) matches this William Brown's paternal line and lists his most distant known ancestor as Robert Brown (d. 1833, Fayette County, TN)(husband of Nancy Hays); however, paternal line information is needed before we can confirm whether or not this person's paper trail to the claimed ancestor is correct.  This William Brown paternal line also matches other people with the Brown surname as well as people with the surnames Perry, Logan, Pyatt, Donegan, Lang, Morison, Tran, Trent, etc...  This is believed to be an Irish paternal line.  The Irish did not begin taking surnames until sometime around the 16th century; therefore, it is very common for an Irish paternal line to have numerous surnames.  These different surnames will merge at some point on this paternal line, but it is not yet clear as to exactly where the merges will occur.  There are currently several Autosomal DNA (Family Finder) Kits in the project that matches this line and is available for DNA cousin-in-common & matrix comparisons. Y-DNA is also needed for comparison from other "Brown" family paternal lines who had ancestors that lived in the Campbell County, Georgia area.  67-Marker Y-DNA test is recommended for this paternal line.

Note:  There is a possibility that Nathan Henry "Ned" Hazel may have been the grandson of William Richard Hazel, Jr. instead of his son.  Ned's death certificate lists "Richard Hazel & Nancy Leroy" as his parents; however, the 1880 US Federal Census lists him as a "Grandson."  Typically, the death certificate would be more accurate; and thus, that is how we are currently listing Ned's family line.  However, Y-DNA is needed from a direct male descendant with a solid paper trail to Nathan Henry "Ned" Hazel in order to confirm that this is indeed correct.  Autosomal DNA Chromosome 5, Start Location 35415339, End Location 123199241 has been identified as having been inherited from William Richard Hazel, Jr. & his wife Nancy Leroy Hazel.  Additionally, based on location of ancestors, we believe that this Hazel paternal line will connect with other Hazel's listed in Subgroup #3 in the Hazel surname Y-DNA Project.  Subgroup #3 also has a participant who lives in Stockholm that has his line traced to Zakarias Hassellöf, born 1730, Ohr, Sweden.  Y-DNA from a descendant of William Richard Hazel, Sr. is needed to confirm.  67-Marker Y-DNA test or higher is recommended for this paternal line.
