Windham's Descending From England

About us

The statement below from Mr. Bennett Grenspan, President of Family Tree DNA was obtained when there was one (1) male Wyndham with a proven line of descent from England who had been tested. Since then an additional three (3) male Wyndhams with proven lines of descent from England have had their Y-DNA markers tested.  All four of these Wyndhams share matching Y-DNA markers along with proven lines of descent from the first marriage of Sir Thomas Wyndham and his first wife Eleanor Scope.  This Sir Thomas was the only son with heirs of Sir John Wyndham who married Lady Margaret Howard.  This Sir John was in turn the son of John Wyndham who in the 1400's purchased Felbrigg Hall found in Norfolk England.

These four Wyndhams also share matching Y-DNA markers to a specific line of Windhams found in South Carolina in the early 1700's.  This line of South Carolina Windhams is believed to have descended from the second marriage of Sir Thomas and Elizabeth Wentworth.

In 2008, Mr. Bennett Greenspan, President of Family Tree DNA was asked to review and comment on the results being obtained from Windhams with matching Y-DNA markers to Wyndhams with known and proven lines of descent back to England. In addition to passing on his approval, he also made the comment “I think that you have used genetic genealogy really well”.

************

Male Wyndhams/Windhams who match the appropriate number of Y-DNA markers to the Y-DNA markers of males with proven lines of descent from England, will be able to cross the Atlantic to England and to their shared male ancestor who is believed to be Sir Thomas Windham whose first wife was Eleanor Scope and whose second wife was Elizabeth Wentworth.

These three distinctly related Wyndham lines from the marriage of Sir Thomas and his first wife Eleanor Scrope are identified as: the Dinton, Alberta, Canada Wyndham Line, the Dalwood, Australia Wyndham Line and the College Wyndham Line.  Matching Y-DNA markers were reported from testing performed by Family Tree DNA.

The above Wyndham lines also match as high as 66 of 67 Y-DNA markers and a Genetic Distance of 1 on Family Tree DNA’s Y-DNA67 test to a distinct line of male Windhams found in South Carolina as early as 1736. This line of South Carolina Windham's is believed to have descended from Sir Thomas and his second wife Elizabeth Wentworth.

By the early 1800’s descendants from this South Carolina Windham line had extended to Georgia, Alabama and Mississippi.  By the late 1860’s it had extended to Texas.  By the 1900’s, it was also found in Florida.
