About us

Kits are grouped according to closeness of the matches. For the purposes of this project, "a close" match is defined as having no more than 5 marker differences out of 67 tested, 4 out of 37, 3 out of 25, or 1 out of 12. Even so, out of 80 participants who have a close match (as of Jul 2012), 69 participants have only 0, 1, or 2 markers different than the modal values of the subgroup to which they belong.

As with any Y-DNA project, this project takes the "paper trail" evidence into consideration when analyzing the closeness of a match. With strong traditional research, a kit may be included in a subgroup even if it is not a close match to the subgroup per this project's definition of "close". On the other hand, without the benefit of traditional research for a given participant, the aforementioned definition will be strictly applied. It is better to be conservative in this regard rather than to imply a relationship is closer than it likely is.
