About us

2021:  THIS PROJECT IS STILL ACTIVE, BUT DETAILED DISCUSSION WAS DISCONTINUED IN 2010.

Please note that although groups 1-4 (colored yellow) on the Y-DNA results page are separated, all four groups MATCH; they share the same Luter/Lewter ancestor. However, we still do not know the relationship of the four groups to each other. Were the four ancestors brothers? Cousins? Some brothers and som

2010-DETAILED RESULTS DISCUSSION

July 30, 2010. All of K. Luther's 37 marker results have come back, and he is a perfect match to the other Luther male! Their line goes back to John LUTER of Virginia.

October 1, 2010. Although it was not necessary for K. Luther to take the Deep Clade (SNP) Test (R. Lewter already took it, and results will apply to all matching men), we are happy that he did take it, to prove that all matching Luter-Lewter men will share the same exact haplogroup. Kenneth is also R-L48+ (shorthand way of writing the haplogroup).

November 3, 2010.  K. Luther's 38-67 marker results are in, and he is a PERFECT match to the other two men who have tested those markers, including the Null 425 value, which is very important. Yet more proof that the four Luter-Lewter men of Colonial America were very closely related (brothers or first cousins).

PRIOR YEARS 2006-2009 - DETAILED RESULTS DISCUSSION
July 16, 2006. J. LUTHER has joined this project; he already had his DNA testing performed, so the results were posted today (earliest known ancestor MICHAEL LUTHER).

July 29, 2006. The results are in for B. LEWTER. He descends from HARDY LUTER/LEWTER of NORTH CAROLINA through HARDY'S son ELIAS, and ELIAS' son HENRY K. He is not a match to the Michael LUTHER family. They are two different haplogroups.

August 31, 2006. Results for T. LUTHER show that his line is really LUTER. This line goes back to JOHN LUTER of VIRGINIA however, somewhere along the way, this branch changed its name to LUTHER. T. is a perfect 12 marker match to R. LEWTER, proving the two families share a common ancestor.

October 12, 2006. The results for R. LEWTER match those of T. and B. LEWTER, thus proving a common ancestor for all three of them. R descends from HARDY LUTER/LEWTER through his son ELIAS, and then his son KINCHEN. This is the first person to test who descends from KINCHEN. R is also the first person to test 25 markers.

October 17, 2006. J's results came in today, and he is a perfect match on all 12 markers with R, T, and B, proving they all share a common LEWTER-LUTER ancestor. J is the first person to test who descends from HENRY K. LEWTER'S son JAMES W. LEWTER.

October 25, 2006. R's markers 13-25 were announced today. He is the first person to test 25 markers, so there is no one else to compare his entire 25 markers to at this time.

January 17, 2007. G's first 12 markers came in today, and he matches perfectly with all the other LUTER-LEWTER! This means that MATTHEW LUTER (G's ancestor) definitely shares a common ancestor with HARDY & JOHN LUTER-LEWTER, the other VIRGINIA-NORTH CAROLINA Colonial families.

January 25, 2007. G's next 13 markers came in today, and he matches perfectly (all 25 markers) with R LEWTER. There is no doubt that MATTHEW LUTER and HARDY LUTER/LEWTER of Colonial NORTH CAROLINA were closely related.

September 1, 2007. R's results are in for markers 26-37. So far he is the only one in the group to test 37 markers.

September 27, 2007. R's results are in for his Deep Clade SNP test. HIS RESULTS APPLY TO EVERY MALE WHO MATCHES HIM. He is confirmed as R1b1c. FTDNA tests only for R1b1c1 through R1b1c8. Ronald is not 1-8. Therefore, he is likely 9, 10, 11 or an as yet undiscovered subclade. If your markers match Ronald's, you are also R1b1c and do not need to take the Deep Clade test.

November 27, 2007. W's 12 marker results have come in, and he is an exact match with all the men in the Hardy, John, and Matthew Luter-Lewter branches! W descends from GILES LEWTER, so now we know the four men of Colonial Virginia and North Carolina definitely share the same Luter ancestor. Now we will wait for the rest of W's markers to come in (13-25).

November 30, 2007. W's 13-25 results are already in, and he matches perfectly to both R and G. This is further proof that these three branches are CLOSELY related!

January 28, 2008. W's 26-37 marker results have arrived, and he also continues to closely match the other men.

February 24, 2008. T. Luter's 1-12 marker results have come in, and we're excited to see that he is a match to the others.

March 5, 2008. The rest of T's results (markers 13-37) are all in, and he is a close match to the others!

March 7, 2008. And now we finally have T's 26-37 marker results, and he is a definite close match to the other men!

March 10, 2008. More results! G's 26-37 marker results have also come in, and he also is a close match to the other men.

March 18, 2008. R did further Deep Clade (SNP) testing, and was positive for SNP U106. This means his ancient Luter-Lewter ancestor may have come to England during the Anglo-Saxon invasion, but of course much more research needs to be done to prove this. U106 is generally thought NOT to be Celtic, but again, much more research needs to be done. HIS DEEP CLADE RESULTS APPLY TO EVERY MALE WHO MATCHES HIM.

April 30, 2008. We now have B's 37 marker results as well, and are delighted to see he also closely matches the others who have tested out to 37 markers!

August 28, 2008. F. LIDER's 12 marker results are in. There are no matches to anyone else in the project.

September 30, 2008. R's 38-67 marker results are in. No one else has tested 67 markers, so he does not yet have anyone else with whom to compare his results. Interestingly, he has a null value on DYS 425.

October 15, 2008. H's 12 marker test has come in. He does not match anyone in the project. Family tradition is that there was both white and black in the Lewter line. Early census records show the Lewter male being listed as "Mulatto". The DNA test shows the Y-DNA to be of Western European origin.

February 26, 2009. W has now tested the full 67 markers. He and R match exactly on markers 38-67, showing they are CLOSELY related. This means their ancestors, Giles Lewter and Hardy Lewter, could definitely have been brothers or cousins.

March 9, 2009. R did further Deep Clade (SNP) testing for newly discovered SNPs. He was found to be positive (derived) for SNP L48. He was negative (ancestral) for L44, L46 and L47. The Luter/Lewter haplogroup is now called R-L48 (shorthand). HIS DEEP CLADE RESULTS APPLY TO EVERY MALE WHO MATCHES HIM.

June 30, 2009. J's 26-37 markers have come back from the lab, and he is a perfect match to R Lewter, including the mutation that differs R and J from the rest of the matching men in the project. Their nearest common ancestor was Henry Lewter. The fact that R and J match means that Henry had the mutation and passed it on to his sons. Now we need to find out if Henry's father also had the mutation, which will involve finding other men to test who descend from one of Henry's brothers.

July 1, 2009. Please note that although groups 1-4 on the Y-DNA results page are separated, all four groups MATCH; they share the same Luter/Lewter ancestor. However, we still do not know the relationship of the four groups to each other. Were the four ancestors brothers? Cousins? Some brothers and some cousins?
