About us

The Irvine Clan Autosomal DNA Project was established in October 2014 by Peter B. Irvine to complement the Clan Irwin Surname DNA Study, which was founded in November 2005 by James M. Irvine (see www.clanirwin-dna.org).  The autosomal project uses Family Finder results on Family Tree DNA (FTDNA) to connect cousins who share a common ancestor within five or six generations.  Its goal is to supplement the information already available in the surname project, so that both men and women can trace their lineage to an Irvine/Irving/Irwin ancestor anywhere in their family tree (within limits).  We have three categories of membership:  (1) women and men who may or may not have the Irvine/Irving/Irwin surname but have an Irvine/Irving/Irwin ancestor somewhere in their family tree; (2) Irvine/Irving/Irwin men who are in the autosomal project but not the surname project (currently there are no members in this category); and (3) Irvine/Irving/Irwin men who are already in the surname project.  Because of FTDNA's privacy policies, the results of autosomal DNA tests are not posted on the project's public website.  On the other hand, Y-DNA results are always posted, even on a Family Finder project.  Our autosomal results may be shared privately with individual members of the project and/or member sub-groups, but not with the general public.
