About us

In trying to research my husband's "brick wall" ancestor, I came to the conclusion that Y-DNA testing might be the only option I have left.  Since there was not a Van Winkle project, I finally decided that I was going to have to start one.  If anyone is interested in helping administrate the group, please let me know.

You will notice that we have a General Fund.  Money that is donated to this fund can be used to purchase tests for those who can't afford all or part of the cost, or it can be used to pay for upgrades.  A member must agree to an upgrade before the group can purchase it.

Members of this project will be placed into sub-groups, if enough of their ancestry is known.

Sub-groups will be numbered (#) according the number their ancestor was given in the book "A Genealogy of the Van Winkle Family, 1630 - 1993, Descendants of Jacob Walichs of Holland", James C. Van Winkle, editor.

Members whose ancestry have been traced all the way back to Jacob Walichs, may be split into to sub-groups according to where their lineage diverge.  For example, Jacob Walichs had 18 grandsons.  There is a possibility that we might eventually have a sup-group for each of those grandsons.  This may depend on whether there are mutations found at that generation.

Non-Van Winkle Y-DNA members may join and be placed in the Guests sub-group.  This will allow those that have a female Van Winkle line the opportunity to watch as the project grows.
