About us

The Valle Maggia Ticino Switzerland project is mainly for those whose male Y-dna direct line or female MT-dna line, that is, Mitochrondrial mother’s line, descends from the Valle Maggia in the Swiss Canton of Ticino. The largely male migrations of the Ticinesi from the 1850s to Australia and California and finally Argentina, created the beginnings of an extensive transportation of gene pools to the New Worlds. Nowadays, those descendents of these 19th and early 20th century migrants are greater in number in foreign lands than they are in their native Ticino. If you are male you may test with any of the Y-dna tests available. You are encouraged to test at least 25 or 37 markers. You may also test with the Mitochondrial tests which trace the line from either male or female child to mother, to mother, and so on. If you are female, you may only test the Mitochondrial line. Choose your tests accordingly. The Valle Maggia, which extends from the city of Locarno northwest some 50 kilometres into the Alps, was one of the most fruitful source of Swiss-Italian emigration to the New Worlds of the Americas and Australia. Because the Valle Maggia is geographically small, many of its families were already highly interrelated upon emigration from Ticino. Our task is to plot that dissemination of the gene pool from the 19th and 20th centuries into the twenty-first century.
