Valko Name Meaning and History

1. Czech and Slovak: pet form of the personal name Valentin (see Valentine).
2. Hungarian (Valkó): from a pet form of the personal name Valér, from Latin Valerius (see Valerio).
3. Hungarian: probably also a habitational name from any of various places called Valkó or a regional name from a former county so named, although in this case the correct form of the surname would be with the suffix -i (i.e. Valkói or Valkai).

VALENTINE (12444) English and Scottish: from the medieval personal name, Latin Valentinus, a derivative of Valens (see VALENTE), which was never common in England, but is occasionally found from the end of the 12th century, probably as the result of French influence. The name was borne by a 3rd Century saint and martyr, whose chief claim to fame is that his feast falls on 14 February, the date of a traditional celebration of spring going back to the Roman fertility festival of Juno Februata. A 5th century missionary bishop of Rhaetia of this name was venerated especially in southern Germany, being invoked as a patron against gout and epilepsy. It is also an Americanization of Valentin, Valentino, and possibly other European cognates.

VALKO (277) 1. Czech and Slovak: pet form of the personal name Valentin (see Valentine).

NOTE, I learned of the above information via a third party years ago and immediately dismissed the concept that Valko and Valentine had any relationship. Just recently I found the above reference with ISBN number. In the time between my first encounter of this explanation and the above reference I became aware that VALKO was also a first name, given name in Bulgaria and Russia. In many Slavic countries including Russia and Bulgaria Valentine is a common first name. A pet form of Valentine is easily VALKO.
In many countries first names became last names; ie John's son, Lar's son, Wilhelm, Heinrich, Franz, even Valentine. I now believe that Valentine becoming VALKO and then becoming a last name, surname is very possible.
