About us

The Tupper family is one of America's colonial families. Thomas Tupper and his wife Anne Hodgson were among the founders of Sandwich, Massachusetts, in 1637. Today, the Tupper Family Association (TFA) comprises many of the descendants of Thomas and Anne Tupper. In 1995 the TFA published the third edition of its genealogy, The Tupper Family in the United States and Canada, a two-volume work of some 2000 pages. Tupper researchers have long known, however, of many lines that have not established a connection with the Thomas Tupper line, and these lines are included in the genealogy too. One of these begins with Elijah Tupper, who was apparently born in Connecticut in 1788 but whose life can be fully documented only in Delaware County, New York, from about 1820 on. The Tupper Y-DNA Surname Project was launched in January 2006 when two Tuppers, one (No. 26883 below) who traces his line back to Thomas and one (No. 46157) whose line begins with Elijah, tested with Family Tree DNA and found that their results did not match, having a genetic distance of 11 on 25 markers. This finding indicates that Elijah Tupper is not a descendant of Thomas and that Elijah does not share a common ancestor with Thomas in the paternal line.
