About us

22 February 2006. We are pleased to add to our project the results from our second documented descendant (No. 50209) of Thomas Tupper. Like the first, he differs greatly from our Elijah descendant, with a distance of 12 on 25 markers. The relationship between the two Thomas descendants is a bit unclear at the moment. They show a distance of 4 on 25 markers, which is higher than one would expect for two individuals having a common ancestor within the last 12 generations. We are seeking clarification of these results, but for the moment we are assigning our two Thomas descendants to a single group, with our Elijah descendant constituting a separate group. We look forward to adding additional members to our project and clarifying our results.
12 April 2006. We have added the results for a new member to our project, and we now have 37-marker haplotypes for all project members. Our new member (No. 52375) is a descendant of Edward Tupper, who was apparently born in Colorado in 1883 and who stated that his father was John Tupper, about whom nothing more is known. Our new member shows no connection with anyone else in the project thus far, and thus he constitutes a third group. At the 37-marker level, our two Thomas descendants (Group A) show six mismatches. We note, however, that five of these mismatches are on fast-mutating markers (coded in red on the chart). We also note that these two members are the only ones in our project thus far who show any connection at all. Each of the other two members has distances of between 18 and 23 from everyone else currently in the project. We believe, therefore, that these results are consistent with our two Group A members' documented descents from Thomas Tupper.
29 June 2006. We have added a new member to our project, a second descendant of Elijah Tupper. Member 60605 is a first cousin, once removed, of our first Elijah descendant and has joined the project in order to guarantee the accuracy of the testing process. We consider the accuracy confirmed, as these two cousins show only one mismatch at the 37-marker level.
1 May 2011. After a hiatus of nearly five years, we are excited to add a new member to our Y-DNA study. Member 201253 is our third documented descendant of Thomas Tupper; at the 37-marker level he shows two and eight mismatches with our other two Group A members, No. 26883 and No. 50209, respectively. We note with interest that our three Group A members descend from three different sons of Captain Thomas Tupper, the son of Thomas Tupper and Anne Hodgson.
6 April 2012. We have added two new members, No. 225990 and No. 227306, to Group A. At the 37-marker level, they show distances of only 0 or 2 with other group members except for No. 50209, with whom they both show a distance of 6.

Readers familiar with Tupper genealogy might be interested in the lineages of our Group A members for the first six generations. We have given these below and indicated the chapter number for the sixth-generation member from the 1995 genealogy.

No. 26883: Thomas, Capt. Thomas, Thomas, Thomas, Simeon, Simeon (Chap. 9).
No. 50209: Thomas, Capt. Thomas, Israel, Samuel, Seth, Peleg (Chap. 37).
No. 201253: Thomas, Capt. Thomas, Eldad, Prince, Eldad, Mayhew (Chap. 80).

Alvin Baldwin Tupper, the earliest known Tupper ancestor of new member 225990, is very likely a descendant of Mayhew Tupper, but the paper trail is not yet complete. There is currently no record indicating the descent of William Tupper (Chap. 241), the ancestor of new member 227306, but we note a perfect match at the 37-marker level with No. 26883.

2 May 2012. New member 234530 is a perfect match at the 37-marker level with members 26883 and 227306. His lineage is as follows:

No. 234530: Thomas, Capt. Thomas, Thomas, Thomas, Reuben, Reuben (Chap. 6).

21 September 2012. New member 252236 is a perfect match at the 37-marker level with three of our Group A members: 26883, 227306, and 234530. Our newest member is a descendant of Ezekiel Tupper (Chap. 220). There are currently no records indicating the ancestry of Ezekiel Tupper, but his descendants theorize that he could have been the son of Mayhew Tupper (p. 20). The theory is consistent with the perfect match to 26883 and 234530. The lineage of Ezekiel Tupper (again, consistent with the Y-DNA results but currently not historically documented) would thus be as follows:

No. 252236: Thomas, Capt. Thomas, Thomas, Thomas, Mayhew, Ezekiel (Chap. 220).

27 March 2013. We have added a new member to Group B, the descendants of Elijah Tupper (Chap. 216). New member 271607 descends from Elijah's son Herman; our earlier Group B members descend from Elijah's son Lucius. We are now confident of Elijah Tupper's haplotype. Member 60605 appears to be the most representative. He is a generation closer to Elijah, and he shows a distance of 1 from each of the other two members, who show a distance of 2 from each other.
