Guide to the Y-DNA Results:

Update 12/01/2022

Currently our Troy Surname Group only has three members that have completed a Big-Y700 test. As a result we have three confirmed Ancestral Groups with one Big-Y member each, the groups and each member are defined by their terminal Haplogroup. Utilising TiP reports Ancestral Group 2 has a likely member that requires additional testing to confirm. Additionally Ancestral Group 4 has been identified as a potential group based on TiP reporting.

Further testing is required for group members to either move into one of these groups or create their own.

Ancestral Group 1 (Links to Clan Colla)

Current member contains the defining marker for Clan Colla Z3000. The Collas were warlike princes, the sons of Eochy Doimhlein, son of Cairbre Lifeachar the legendary High King of Ireland.

Ancestral Group 2 (Links to the O'Carolls)

Current member contains the Z16282 marker found in descendant of Charles Carroll, signer of U.S. Declaration of Independence and believed to be descended from medieval Irish kings of Éile O’Carroll.

Potential member has tested for Y-37 and shares 37 Y-chromosome STR markers with the Big-Y member and TiP report indicates a probability of a shared common ancestor within the last 8 generations at 97.28%.

Ancestral Group 3 (Potential Roman or Norman Ancestry)

There is a lack of information about this group, especially as it relates to A5001 marker being present in Ireland. Upstream marker Z209 contains the Basque Marker M153 and could be considered Celtiberians. Some theories indicate that those with the marker A5001 may have entered Ireland during Roman times or as part of the Norman invasions of England and Ireland.
