About us

This is a global DNA study of the Troy Surname. We accept anyone with any variant spelling of the name. So far current research indicates that the surname Troy as it appears in Ireland and the UK was anglicised from the following surnames:

The Gaelic-Irish surnames
·  Ó Tréamháin (Meaning unknown - possibly descendant of journals)
·  Ó Troighthigh (Descendant of foot-soldier)
·  Ó Turráin (Meaning unknown - possibly descendant of turrets)
The Anglo-Norman (or French) surnames
·  de Troyes (from Troyes, France)
·  de Troye (from Mitchell Troy, Wales)

There are a number of variant spellings and anglicisation’s (phonetic renderings) of the original surnames e.g. O’Trehy, O’ Tray, O’ Trahey, O’Trehey, Trehy, Trohy, Trohey, Troye, Troys, de Treo, Trye, Try etc., which mean that over time as some families utilised the anglicised form of Troy, it has made members of all five unrelated families indistinguishable. One thing we can be sure of is that there is likely multiple unrelated families utilising Troy and variants as a surname.

If you are a member of our family who wants to find out more about which variant you belong to and your ancient or recent ancestry, you're in the right place. As we increase our testing we will be able to tease apart these mysteries and discern each family group and their original surname.

We have also established a General Fund, to accept donations in any currency via credit card. These funds will be held at the testing company, and used to help sponsor test kits for those key males who would otherwise be unable to afford the cost of participation in the project. We encourage you to make a donation. To make a donation please click on the link "General Fund – Donate”. If you decide to donate, please select Troy from the list of group names in drop down box on the Group General Fund Contribution page.
