About us

Welcome to the Staveley Dna Project.  The purpose of this project is to support the many years of incredible research of this family with DNA.

In the last couple hundred years the Staveley family has spread around the world and many of us would like to connect back to our roots in England but have hit many brick walls.  Through YDNA we are in a position to be able to help each other out and bridge the gap where traditional genealogy runs out.

We welcome all Male participants with the surnames Stavely, Stavely, Staffley, Stafely, Stavleigh, Staflea, Stavele, Stavile, Stavelay, Staveleie, Stavelaye and Stavelie.

Smith's Old Yorkshire gives the origin of the name Staveley from 'staef' (a staff, stick or pole) and 'ley' (from the old English word for a meadow or field). One interpretation of the amalgamation is that it is believed to indicate where a staff or pole would have been fixed in the river showing where it was fordable and hence a community would have formed.

There are four places in England with the name Stavely and they are:

1. Yorkshire near Ripon

2. Derbyshire

3. Cumbria

4. Staveley-in-Cartmel

It is generally assumed that the origin of this family is most closely linked to Yorkshire and Cumbria
