About us

All Snipe, Snipes, Snypes, Snype and similar surname males in America, the British Isles, and around the world are cordially invited to take the Y-DNA test and join this Snipes Family History Y-DNA Study. Female Snipes descendants and male Snipes descendants without a Snipes surname are also invited to participate and help advance the study by encouraging their Snipes-surnamed brother, uncle, male cousin, etc., to submit a simple cheek-swab test. NOTE: This study may have funds available from time to time to contribute toward testing costs for certain Snipes lines not previously tested and for special lines where a second test is being sought. Please inquire if a group contribution is available for your line.

We recommend the Y-DNA test be at least 37 markers, as testing more markers will lead to more accurate results. The 12-marker test is too general to be very useful for genealogical DNA tracing, and typically needs to be upgraded to at least 37 to provide enough specific data. The 67-marker and 111-marker tests have progressively more accurate and specific reaches back into Snipes Y-DNA history.

Requirements

A surname project traces members of a family that share a common surname. They are of the most interest in cultures where surnames are passed on from father to son like the Y-Chromosome. This project is for males taking a Y-Chromosome DNA (Y-DNA) test. Thus, the individual who tests must be a male who wants to check his direct paternal line (father's father's father's...) with a Y-DNA37, Y-DNA67, or Y-DNA111 test and who has one of the surnames listed for the project.

Females do not carry their father's Y-DNA. Females who would like to check their father's direct paternal line can have a male relative with his surname order a Y-DNA test. Females, as well as males, can also order an mtDNA test for themselves, such as the mtDNAPlus test or the mt Full Sequence test and participate in an mtDNA project. This will trace the direct maternal DNA line. Both men and women may take an autosomal Family Finder test to discover recent relationships across all family lines.

Only Y-DNA results will be listed on this project, but the Snipes Family of America, Inc., will work with you if needed to help interpret your DNA results and place you in known Snipes lines as we are able.

We look forward to working together to advance our shared knowledge of the Snipes family. Please contact the project administrator, Kathy Hilliard (kahilliard@gmail.com) with DNA testing questions or go to www.snipesfam.org to find out more about the Snipes Family of America, Inc.
