About us

From FTDNA Discover, 28 January 2023:
"The R-BY168 Story
R-BY168's paternal line was formed when it branched off from the ancestor R-FGC5572 and the rest of mankind around 1850 BCE.
The man who is the most recent common ancestor of this line is estimated to have been born around 1450 BCE."
So, BY168 is now thought to have been born about 1450 BC. That was during the Middle Bronze Age (MBA) in Britain.

Thus far, just three of our members are able to trace their Y-DNA lines to Europe. One of those traces his Y-DNA mdka (most distant known ancestor) to the village of Llanafan Fawr, Powys, Wales, and the 17th century. Another traces his mdka to Tregaron, Ceredigion, Wales, and 1829. The third traces his Y-DNA mdka to Melksham, Wiltshire, England, also in the 17th century. Two close matches who have not yet joined the project trace their Y-DNA mdka to Cardeston, Shropshire, England, right on the Welsh border. All of these places are in western Britain, decidedly Celtic territory, two of them in Wales, the others very near or right on the border of England and Wales.

Given the distribution of Y-haplogroup R1b-L21, its subclades, DF13, Z39589, and DF41, it seems likely, at least as things now stand, that our Y-DNA ancestors were Celtic Britons whose Y-chromosome progenitor was one of the Kurgan Bell Beaker men who arrived in Britain from the European Continent in the Bronze Age (see Olalde et al,
The Beaker Phenomenon and the Genomic Transformation of Northwest Europe, 2018). Apparently the Kurgan Bell Beaker people were derived from the Single Grave Corded Ware people on the European continent, who were ultimately derived from the Yamnaya people of the Eurasian steppe.

Given the origins of the surnames in the 41-1123 cluster, which is BY166+, downstream of BY168, it appears to be focused on the area known historically as the Welsh Marches.

Here is the list of surnames of men currently known to be derived (positive) for BY168:
