About us
The start date of this project is February 15th, 2021. The idea is to bring together yDNA-tested men whose STRs (Y-37 up to Y111) and/or their SNPs (Big Y test) reveal Norse-origin genetic relationships within the R-YP276 haplogroup and downstream.
Building on the extensive work already done by the Clan Donald USA Project, as well as the Norway DNA Norge Project, it is our hope that this particular project will be a home for those men whose R-YP276 and downstream genetic origin is linked to Nordic Iron Age and Viking Age Scandinavia.
Many yDNA tested men of Scottish, English and Irish descent have the R1a Norse genetic signature of R-YP276 and its sub-clades. The R-YP276 clade itself is one of several (thirteen or more sub-clades) of the Scandinavian haplogroup R-CTS4179 which is estimated to have formed approximately 2,800 years before present.
Based on a review of current and available FTDNA and YFull data, there are presently:
-R-YP276 & downstream men of Norwegian, Danish, Swedish & Scottish ancestry,
-R-YP278 & downstream men of Belgian and British / Irish ancestry,
-R-YP275 & downstream men of Swedish, British & Irish ancestry,
-R-YP274 & downstream men of Scottish ancestry,
-R-YP280 men of Norwegian & English ancestry,
-R-FGC85898 men of Irish / Northern Irish & British ancestry,
-R-YP507 & downstream men of Scottish & Irish ancestry,
-R-FGC52681 men of Norwegian ancestry,
-R-YP4489 & downstream men of Norwegian, Swedish, Scottish, Irish/N. Irish, & English ancestry,
-R-YP330 & downstream men of Norwegian, Swedish, Scottish & British ancestry,
-R-YP327 & downstream men of Scottish ancestry,
-R-YP326 & downstream men of Scottish & Irish ancestry, descended from Somerled (1113-1164 AD).
Beyond the living men of our R-YP276 clade, two (2) Viking Age samples from the Margaryan “Population Genomics of the Viking World” study released in September, 2020 reveal:
-a Viking era man in Iceland (VK129) of haplogroup R-YP275, sub-clade R-BY154143. FTDNA's "Discover" / Ancient Connections tab refers to this man as INGIRIDARSTADIR 8.
-a Viking era man in Kopparsvik, Gotland, Sweden (VK48) of haplogroup R-YP4489, sub-clade R-FGC52679. FTDNA's "Discover" / Ancient Connections tab refers to this man as KOPPARSVIK 212.
**See rough haplotree diagram below.....
All of the men of our haplogroup R-YP276 & downstream are certainly of Norse genetic origin back in Viking and/or pre-Viking times. The Scottish, English, Irish and other British men of our R-YP276 & downstream sub-clades share the same or very similar yDNA signatures as their current day Scandinavian yDNA cousins.
We encourage all men within our clade / sub-clades to reach out to their STR & Big Y matches, to compare results, to share ancestral information and to consider further testing.
This is a living project and will continue to grow and evolve as more men do yDNA testing; and more scientific, archeological, genetics and historical information come to light.
