P Haplogroup Y-DNA

About us

This project is open to anyone who is predicted or confirmed to belong to Y-DNA Haplogroup P.

Haplogroup P in its broadest sense includes all branches of the YDNA haplotree which are downstream of the parent branch point defined by SNP PF5850. Almost all of these branches belong to haplogroups Q and R which are covered by a wide range of haplogroup projects from large 'gateway' projects down to specialist projects covering just one branch. Anyone who is confirmed or predicted to belong to Q or R does not qualify for membership of this project and should join the relevant project(s) for their branch.

This project is to cover the small number of branches which are positive for PF5850 but negative for the SNPs defining Q (M242) and R (M207). We welcome anyone who is confirmed through SNP testing (ideally Big Y) to belong to one of these branches. We also welcome testers who match a confirmed haplogroup P line through STR testing.

The YDNA branches we are interested in are mainly found in an arc sweeping anticlockwise from SE Asia northwards into Mongolia and Siberia. It is thought that the ancestors of haplogroups Q and R lived in these regions for over 10,000 years (from around 42,000 BCE to around 30,000 BCE) during which time branches of P were formed.
