This project is for the descendants of “O.N.” Oratio Nelson Smith and his wife Sarah Hyatt. Oratio was born in New York in 1821 and his wife Sarah, daughter of Zachariah Hyatt and Wyntje “Lavina” Kimberg, was born in New York in 1828. Oratio and Sarah had 11 children together; born in Michigan, Illinois and Iowa. There are very few direct male and female descendants, so this is mainly a Family Finder project.

 

The children of Oratio and Sarah are: James Knox Polk Smith, Clark Mason Smith, Eldarillo Smith, Elizabeth Jane Smith, Sarah Jane Smith (death at infancy), Oratio Nelson Smith (death at infancy), Mary Alice Smith, William Harrison B. Smith, Cynthia Ophelia Smith, Katherine Byronia Smith and Melvina Cornelia Smith. All but 2 lived to adulthood and have living descendants across the United States. 

The type of test results we will accept are:

1. Family Finder (atDNA)

2. proven ydna (direct male ancestry), but we ask that you upgrade to the Family Finder test

3. proven mtdna (direct female ancestry), but we ask that you upgrade to the Family Finder test

You are also asked to sign up for a FREE account with GEDMATCH at http://www.gedmatch.com/; upload your raw zipped data results and receive a kit number to be shared with our project administration. This will allow us another set of tools for comparison within our family.
