About us

The McMenamin/McMenamy/McM* DNA Project is a collaborative effort to identify family groups through the use of genetic testing.

Although we share a variant of the same surname, do we actually share the same ancestors?

There are some gaps between the data we have on our most recent McM* family lines and the ancestral families back in Ireland. How do we connect to them and to each other?

Genetic genealogy can reveal relationships between connected family lineages. By doing so, we hope to solve a family mystery. If you're searching for answers about your McM* ancestors, participating in this DNA project is one way to discover them.

Y-DNA TESTING of MALE MCM*

The primary method to conclusively prove whether two McM* lineages share the same direct paternal line is Y-DNA testing of McM* men. The Y-chromosome is inherited directly from father to son generation after generation. When two or more men share the same Y-DNA profile it instantly proves they descended from the same McM* lineage.

AUTOSOMAL DNA TESTING

Both men and women have autosomal DNA. This is the type inherited from 50% from both parents giving us 25% from each grandparent, 12.25% from each great-grandparent, and in smaller percentages from each generation past. This is a great supplement to the information gained from Y-DNA testing. For females or those who descend from a female McM*, autosomal DNA is the only test that can capture the data we need. You will match cousins who also have McM* ancestry. An analysis of those matches may actually prove the origins of your McM* lineage, or at least provide some clues as to which lineages your line may be related.

ADMINISTRATIVE ACCESS: This project requires you to "Grant Limited Access" for administrators to your DNA kit results.

FTDNA's privacy and access policies require you to provide Group Project Administrators with documented permission to access your DNA kit results and data. Please access your settings for Group Projects and select "Grant Limited Access" for all group admins. Minimal access does not allow us to assess your McM* matches.
