Lineages, SNPs and STRs

The following tables present views of the various patriarch trees and the unique Y-Chromosome SNPs found in the project participants. The Mattingly DNA Surname Project is a work in progress. The results on this page are updated as test results or more accurate lineage information becomes available

Table 1 shows participants who are descendants of Thomas Mattingly II. The descendants in this branch are under represented and additional members are needed to confirm and expand the existing DNA knowledge of these family lines.

If you are a direct descendant of a son of Thomas Mattingly II (Thomas III, James, Charles, William or Luke) and willing to provide a DNA sample, the project may fund DNA testing provided your patriarch tree can be substantiated. Please contact the project administrator.

Table 2 shows participants who are descendants of John Baptist Mattingly, grandson of Cezar Mattingly.

If you are a direct descendant of a son of John Baptist Mattingly (John Baptist, James Barton, John, William, Henry or Bennett) and willing to provide a DNA sample, the project may fund DNA testing provided your patriarch tree can be substantiated. Please contact the project administrator.

Table 3 shows participants who are descendants of Richard Mattingly Sr., grandson of Cezar Mattingly.

If you are a direct descendant of a son of Richard Mattingly Sr. (Barnett, Richard Jr., Joseph or James B.) and willing to provide a DNA sample, the project may fund DNA testing provided your patriarch tree can be substantiated. Please contact the project administrator.

Table 4 shows participants who descend from Walter Mattingly/Matney Sr., grandson of Cezar Mattingly. These members are placed as descendants of Cezar Mattingly because this group all carry SNP Y14083 as well as the general Mattingly haplogroup SNPs. The genealogical record in not clear regarding the parents and grandparents of Broadwater Matney; however, the DNA evidence suggests that Broadwater Matney and Walter Matney Jr. are not only descendants of Cezar Mattingly (positive for SNP Y14083), but they also share a common ancestor (both positive for SNP Y85450).

If you are a direct descendant of a son of Broadwater Matney (Samuel, Brooks, Charles, William M., Walter J., John A., James M., Elisha, Carrell B., Phinn M., Jackson D., Isaac, Joel) and willing to provide a DNA sample, the project may fund DNA testing provided your patriarch tree can be substantiated. Please contact the project administrator.

If you are a direct descendant of a son of Walter Matney Jr. (David, Daniel, Walter, John W.) and willing to provide a DNA sample, the project may fund DNA testing provided your patriarch tree can be substantiated. Please contact the project administrator. If you are a Matney family genealogist and can assist in identifying the unknown Mattingly-Matney ancestors, however speculative, please contact the project administrator.

Table 5 shows participants who descend from Clement Allen Matney. These members are placed as descendants of Cezar Mattingly because this group all carry SNP Y14083 as well as the general Mattingly haplogroup SNPs. The genealogical record in not clear regarding the parents and grandparents of Clement Allen Matney; however, the DNA evidence suggests that Stephen Matney and his brother, Uriah Allen Matney, are not only descendants of Cezar Mattingly (positive for SNP Y14083), but they also share a common ancestor (both positive for SNP Y80210).

If you are a direct descendant of a son of Clement Allen Matney (Henry C., Elias B., Uriah A., Stephen, Thomas) and willing to provide a DNA sample, the project may fund DNA testing provided your patriarch tree can be substantiated. Please contact the project administrator. If you are a Matney family genealogist and can assist in identifying the unknown Mattingly-Matney ancestors, however speculative, please contact the project administrator.

Table 6 shows participants who descend from Brooks Matney and his son Walter Matney. Currently none of these project members carry SNP Y14084 associated with the Mattingly-Matney haplogroup. All of the Project members in this group test positive for the R1b-DF49 haplogroup which is mutually exclusive to the Mattingly/Matney haplogroup R1b-DF27.

If you are a direct descendant of a son of Brooks Matney (Walter, Daniel D., Charles J.,William C., Jefferson) and willing to provide a DNA sample, the project may fund DNA testing provided your patriarch tree can be substantiated. Please contact the project administrator. Priority will be given to descendants of sons of Daniel D., Charles J., William C. or Jefferson. If you are a Matney family genealogist and can assist in identifying the  ancestors of Brooks Matney, however speculative, please contact the project administrator.

This project respects the privacy of all participants. No names of living individuals are ever disclosed. The full results of DNA can only be viewed by project participants.

Table 1: Descendants of Thomas Mattingly II

The project currently has five participants descending from Thomas Mattingly II. These are T1, T2, T3, T4 and T5. The project has relied on the genealogical record to establish the patrilineal ancestors of these five project members. The genetic evidence appears to be consistent with the genealogical record.

Analysis of Big-Y test results has identified two SNPs that are unique to participants T1 and T2 these being Y20213 and Y20214. Participant T3 tested positive for SNP Y20214 only. Because SNP Y20214 is common in two distinct lineages it had to have been passed down from an ancestor common to both lineages; in this case, that ancestor is Leonard Mattingly II (generation 5), the 1st great grandson of Thomas Mattingly II.

It is possible SNP Y20214 was passed to Leonard Mattingly II by his father, "Old" Leonard Mattingly. But in order to determine this, a DNA donor is required from a male who descends from a brother of  Leonard Mattingly II. If that descendant carries Y20214 then "Old" Leonard Mattingly would have had to carry it as well to have passed it two at least two sons.

We also know that "Old" Leonard Mattingly's father, Ignatius Mattingly Sr., did not carry SNP Y20214. We know this because SNP Y20214 was not found in participants T4 or T5.

We can also claim that SNP Y20214 was not carried by Thomas Mattingly I; otherwise, it would be carried by the Cezar descendants and those participants clearly do not have this mutation.

SNP Y20213 appears to be unique to participants T1 and T2. SNP Y20213 had to be present in their common ancestor, William Taylor Mattingly; however, this mutation could have formed in generations 6 through 9.

To date, no unique SNPs have been identified in the two lineages represented by participants T4 and T5. Both participants carry private SNPs none of which are common to both lineages. Additonal participants are needed in these lineages to identify a terminal SNP in each.

Table 2: Descendants of John Baptist Mattingly Sr., grandson of Cezar Mattingly

The project currently has three participants descending from John Baptist Mattingly Sr. These are C6, C7 and C8. Project members C6 and C7 descend from John Baptist's son, Henry Mattingly. Project member C8 descends Henry's brother, William.

Analysis of Big-Y test results for project members C6, C7 and C8 show all to be carriers of all SNPs in the Y14084 group that can be attributed to Thomas Mattingly I and his ancestors. In addition, these three participants carry SNP Y14083. SNP Y14083 has also been found in the descendants Richard Mattingly Sr. [Table 3], a younger brother of John Baptist Mattingly Sr. For John Baptist and Richard to both carry SNP Y14083 their father, John Mattingly would also have to be a carrier. Descendants for Thomas Mattingly II do not carry SNP Y14083. The Project therefore predicts that a male who carries SNP Y14083 can reliably claimed to be a descendant of John Mattingly, son of Cezar.

Further analysis shows project members C6 and C7 carry the following three terminal SNPs which are unique to their lineage: FT154797, FT200024 and FT200025. Since both participants carry these SNPs, their father also had to be a carrier in order to pass the mutations to both his sons. It is not known at this time which of the paternal ancestors was the origin of these SNPs. None of the three terminal SNPs was found in project member C8. This suggests John Baptist Mattingly Sr. did not carry these three terminal SNPs.

  1. William R. Mattingly, Descendants of Cezar Mattingly, 17 Dec 2017, acknowledges the possibility that Mark, Samuel, Clement and Hope may be children of Cezar.

Table 3: Descendants of Richard Mattingly Sr., grandson of Cezar Mattingly

The project currently has eight participants descending from Richard Mattingly Sr. These are C1, C2, C10 and C11 who descend from Richard's son, Joseph Mattingly. Project members C3, C5 and C9 descend from Joseph's brother, James Barton Mattingly. Project member C4 descends from eldest brother, Richard Mattingly Jr.

Analysis of Big-Y test results for project members C1, C2, C3, C4, C5, C9, C10 and C11 are all carriers of the Y14084 group that can be attributed to Thomas Mattingly I and his ancestors. In addition, these seven participants carry SNP Y14083. SNP Y14083 has also been found in the descendants John Baptist Mattingly Sr. [Table 2], a older brother of Richard Mattingly Sr. In order for these two siblings, John Baptist and Richard, to both carry SNP Y14083 their father, John Mattingly, would also have to be a carrier. Descendants for Thomas Mattingly II do not carry SNP Y14083. The Project therefore predicts that a male who carries SNP Y14083 can claim to be a descendant of John Mattingly, son of Cezar.

Further analysis shows project members C3, C5 and C9 carry the following four terminal SNPs which are unique to their lineage: FY81248, Y97568, FGC22005 and ZS11771. Since all three participants carry these SNPs, the closest common ancestor, in this case their grandfather, Rayond Mattingly, also had to be a carrier in order to pass the mutations to both his sons, and they to their sons. It is not known at this time which paternal ancestors was the origin of these SNPs.

The only known mutation of the Y-chromosome shared by project members C1 and C2 is a deletion identified by the SNP designation Y125366.

A detailed analysis of the Big-Y test results for project members C10 and C11 share three terminal SNPs unique to their lineage: Y200586, Y200587 and Y200588.

No terminal SNP for member C4 has been identified because that lineage lacks a second DNA sample to corroborate results.

The ancestry of Joseph Mattingly (b.1760) has been a topic of discussion by some family genealogists who suggest he was not a descendant of Cezar. We know that John Baptist Mattingly Sr. was the son of John Mattingly and John was the son of Cezar. Cezar's brother, Thomas II, did not have a son named John. We also know that the descendants of John Baptist Sr. carry SNP Y14083. The fact that the descendants of Joseph Mattingly also carry SNP Y14083 should be adequate proof that John Baptist and Joseph share a common ancestor. Since SNP Y14083 is not found in the Thomas II descendants, the logical conclusion is that the common ancestor is John Mattingly. Thus, Joseph Mattingly is a genetic descendant of Cezar Mattingly.

  1. William R. Mattingly, Descendants of Cezar Mattingly, 17 Dec 2017, acknowledges the possibility that Mark, Samuel, Clement and Hope may be children of Cezar.

Table 4: Descendants of Walter Mattingly/Matney Sr., grandson of Cezar Mattingly

By 1705 Cezar had a 150 acre tract in St Clement's Hundred in Saint Mary's County, MD which they called "The Thames". Rent Rolls give the tract as surveyed Nov 1670 for Patrick Salmon and owned by Cezar in 1705. In 1717, John Matney received a warrant of survey for "Mattingly's Addition", a 50A parcel in Saint Mary's County. The survey stated it adjoined "Thems" now owned by said Mattingly. This is the first known appearance of the Matney surname. Prior to this DNA study, the Mattingly geneaologists did not believe the Matney's were related to the Mattinglys. This DNA study shows the Matneys are all carriers of SNP Y14083 establishing them to be genetic descendants of Cezar Mattingly. What is extraordinary about the Matneys is that none appear as genetic descendants of Thomas II. They appear to be exclusive descendants of Cezar.

How the Matneys descend from Cezar is a subject of debate among the Matney genealogists. There are a few traditions that seems to permeate the debate.

  1. It is widely claimed that Walter Matney, Broadwater Matney and Brooks Matney were brothers.
  2. Willie Sean Matney, a great grandson of Alexander Pate Matney whose father was Daniel Matney, son of Walter Matney Jr. (b. 1772), offers a compelling but circumstantial case suggesting John Mattingly (abt 1690) was the father of Walter Mattingly/Matney Sr. (b. 1738).
  3. Several Matney genealogies list William Carrell and Jane (Brooks) Matney as the parents of Broadwater M. Matney. London is listed as the birthplace of William Carrell Matney in these genealogies. The project believes it is highly improbable a Matney born in England and emigrating to the America could develop the same mutation, SNP Y14083, as his American born Mattingly and Matney cousins.

Analysis of Big-Y test results for project members M1, M2, M5 and M6 show all to be carriers of all SNPs in the Y14084 group that can be attributed to Thomas Mattingly I and his ancestors. In addition, these four participants carry SNP Y14083. SNP Y14083 has also been found in the descendants John Mattingly, son of Cezar. The genetic evidence indicates these four project members descend from John Mattingly.

Further analysis shows project members M1, M2, M5 and M6 carry terminal SNP Y85450. Members M1 and M6 descend from two sons of Walter Matney Jr. Members M2 and M5 descend from two sons of Broadwater M. Matney. Walter Matney Jr. and Broadwater M. Matney both carried SNP Y85450 only if they inherited it from their father. If we believe that Walter Mattingly/Matney Sr. is the father of Walter Matney Jr., then the genetic evidence seems to point to Walter Mattingly Matney Sr. as being the father of Broadwater M. Matney as well. The genetic evidence appears to support the claim that Walter Matney and Broadwater Matney are brothers.

Table 6 shows results for three project members B1, B2 and B3 descending from Brooks Matney. These three descendants do not carry any SNPs associated with the Y14084 group. It is unclear why these three descendants of Brooks Matney are so genetically dissimilar to the larger Matney group.

None of the descendants of John Baptist Mattingly Sr. or Richard Mattingly Sr., show evidence of SNP Y85450. Thus John did not pass the mutation to these two soons. Several years passed between the births John Baptist and Richard and their younger sibling, Walter. It is possible the Y85450 mutation occurred in John Mattingly between those births and only the younger sons inherited Y85450. It is more likely Y85450 formed with Walter Mattingly/Matney Sr.

Matney Ancestor Notes:

  1. William R. Mattingly, Descendants of Cezar Mattingly, 17 Dec 2017, documents the possibility that Mark, Samuel, Clement and Hope may also be children of Cezar.

Table 5: Descendants of Clement Allen (Mattingly) Matney, probable grandson of Cezar

The traditions that emerge regarding Clement Allen (Mattingly) Matney and his sons Uriah and Stephen are as follows:

  1. Clement Allen (Mattingly) Matney genealogies place him as a son of Thomas Mattingly III and grandson of Thomas Mattingly II.
  2. Uriah Allen Matney and Stephen Matney are siblings and sons of Clement Allen (Mattingly) Matney.
  3. Some genealogies place James Bedford Matney as a son of Stephen Matney; others place him as a son of Uriah Allen Matney.

Analysis of Big-Y test results for project members M3, M4, M7 and M8 show all to be carriers of all SNPs in the Y14084 group that can be attributed to Thomas Mattingly I and his ancestors. In addition, these four participants carry SNP Y14083. SNP Y14083 has also been found in the descendants John Mattingly, son of Cezar. The genetic evidence indicates these four project members do not descend from Thomas Mattingly III, son of Thomas Mattingly II.

Project member M3 descends from Isaiah Matney, son of Stephen Matney. Member M8 descends from Elias Matney another son of Stephen Matney. Analysis of Y-chromosome test results indicate M3 and M8 both carry terminal SNP BY89336. Isaiah Matney and Elias Matney can only pass SNP BY89336 to their descendants if they inherited it from their father. Unless other DNA evidence is found, the Project expects all descendants of Stephen Matney to carried terminal SNP BY89336.

Project member M4 descends from John David Matney, son of Uriah Allen Matney. There seems to be no ambiguity regarding John David Matney being a son of Uriah Allen Matney. Member M7 descends from James Bedford Matney and family tradition had placed James Bedford as a son of Stephen. Analysis of Y-chromosome test results indicate M4 and M7 both carry terminal SNP Y80210. John David Matney and James Bedford Matney could only pass SNP Y80210 to their descendants if they inherited it from their father. If M4 inherited SNP Y80210 through Uriah Allen Matney, then the genetic evidence would seem to imply that M7 also inherited SNP Y80210 through Uriah Allen Matney. Therefore, this project places M7 and his paternal ancestors under Uriah Allen Matney. SNP BY89336 was not found in the y-chromosome of member M7 thus providing further evidence that his ancestor, James Bedford Matney, was not a descendant of Stephen.

If Clement Allen (Mattingly) Matney is the father of Uriah Allen and Stephen Mateny, then the presence of SNP Y14083 in the descendants of these Matney ancestors is clear genetic evidence that Cezar Mattingly is also there ancestor and not his brother Thomas. The following two citations from genealogists within the Mattingly supports the genetic evidence.

  1. "Genealogy of Dr. Caroline Mattingly (Born 1893, Redlands, California): On the Mattingly, Berry, Burton, Cloud, Lindley, Hadley, Maris, Stamper, & Tegarden Families", compiled by Caroline Mattingly, Redlands, California (University Professor), 1954, page 12, Chapter: The Mattingly Family in Maryland (from the files of Dr. Joseph Johnson of Louisville, Kentucky, August 1947: Caesar Mattingly's two sons: John married Grace Brewer. He died 1744; his widow and her new husband Peter Johnson administered his estate in St. Mary's Co, Mar. 26 1745 (admr. Acct. Liber D.D. Folio 21, Land Office). The Mattingly children: John, Ignatius, Richard, Luke, Joseph, Elizabeth, Suzanna, James... Clement, son of Caesar went to Ann Arundel Co. at an early age, married Ann Burton Coyle, dau. of Edward and Elizabeth Coyle, before 1727. (Prov. Court Liber P.L. No. 8, Folio 464, Land Office). Children: Clement, born 1748; Francis, born 1732 (both in Prince George Co. -- Census 1776.
  2. Herman E. Mattingly in his book, The Mattingly Family in Early America (1975) mentions two Clements, one of St. Mary's County who was the third son of Thomas Mattingy III; the other, Clement of Anne Arundel County and his wife Ann Burton Coyle. However, he later lists Clement and wife Anne Coyle under the pedigree of Thomas III.

Because of the genetic evidence and the claims of Cezar having a son named Clement, the project places Clement Mattingly and his son, Clement Allen (Mattingly) Matney as descendants of Cezar.

The Project is concerned that two sons of Clement Allen (Mattingly) Matney do not share the same terminal SNP. Is it coincidence that two sons born within 3 years of one another would each develop a y-chromosome mutation? . Possibledevelopso closely

Clement Matney Notes:

  1. William R. Mattingly, Descendants of Cezar Mattingly, 17 Dec 2017, documents the possibility that Mark, Samuel, Clement and Hope may also be children of Cezar. The presence of SNP Y14083 in the descendants of Clement (Mattingly) Matney provides genetic evidence of Cezar being their ancestor.

Table 6: Brooks Matney Descendants

Genealogical tradition states Brooks Matney is a brother of Walter Matney Jr. and Broadwater M. Matney (see Table 4, Generation 5). Matney project members B1, B2 and B3 are descendants Walter Matney, son of Brooks Matney and Jennet Young. Participant B1 descends from Walter Matney's, son of William Broadwater Matney. Participants B2 and B3 descend from Walter Matney's son, John Brooks Matney. None of these three project members carry any of the Y14084 group SNPs attributed to the descendants of Thomas Mattingly I. All three were found to exist in haplogroup FGC65264 which is a sub-clad of haplogroup R1b-DF97. The most recent common ancestor shared between these Brooks Matney descendants and the  main Mattingly-Matney project members is R1b-DF27.

It is unclear why these three descendants deviate from the Mattingly-Matney haplogroup. The data is consistent with all Brook Matney descendants. They all share the same haplogroup and they all share terminal SNP FT11368. Because the descendants of two sons of Walter Matney carry the same group and terminal SPS, it can be concluded the Walter Matney himself carried these SNPs and passed these on to his sons. Walter Matney is only one generation removed from Brooks Matney. If we assume Brooks is in Y14084 group, then Walter might be a step-son of Brooks. The project needs to test descendants from the young sons of Brooks to determine whether they are part of the Y14084 group, or whether SNP FT11368 was carried by Brooks himself. If Brooks carried SNP FT11368 then it is likely he was a step-son of Walter Mattingly/Matney Sr.

Brooks Matney Descendant Notes:

  1. William R. Mattingly, Descendants of Cezar Mattingly, 17 Dec 2017, documents the possibility that Mark, Samuel, Clement and Hope may also be children of Cezar.
  2. Tradition claims Brooks Matney to be a brother of Walter Matney Jr. and Broadwater M. Matney (see Table 3, Generation 5). To date, none of the Brooks Matney descendants carry SNP Y14083 suggesting this is not the case.
  3. The project assumes Walter Matney, son of Brooks Matney is a carrier of SNPs BY21206, FGC65264 and FT8554 because the descendants of two of his sons test positive for this SNP.
