Lineages, SNPs and STRs

The following three tables present views of the Mattingly SNPs and STRs with respect to the various patriarch trees of the project participants. The Mattingly DNA Surname Project is a work in progress. The results on this page are updated as test results or more accurate lineage information becomes available

Table 1:  The first table shows participants who are descendants of Thomas Mattingly II. The descendants in this branch are under represented and additional members are needed to confirm and expand the existing DNA knowledge of these family lines. If you are a direct descendant of a son of Thomas Mattingly II (Thomas III, James, Charles, William or Luke) and willing to provide a DNA sample, the project may fund DNA testing provided your patriarch tree can be substantiated. Please contact the project administrator.

Table 2:  The second table shows participants who are descendants of Cezar Mattingly. The descendants of Richard Mattingly Sr. are fairly well represented. However, the projects seeks additional members descended from John Baptist Mattingly (b. 1715; MD; d. 1759, MD). If you are a direct descendant of a son of John Baptist Mattingly (John Baptist, James Barton, John, William, Henry or Bennett) and willing to provide a DNA sample, the project may fund DNA testing provided your patriarch tree can be substantiated. Please contact the project administrator.

Table 3:  The third table shows Matney members in the project. The various lineages are fairly well represented. These members are currently placed as descendants of Cezar Mattingly because this group all carry SNP Y14083 as well as the general Mattingly haplogroup SNPs. There is a subset of Matney project members descending from Brooks Matney who do not carry SNP Y14083 (see Table 4). nonconforming Matney participant (B1) carries none of the Mattingly group SNPs suggesting either ancestral non-parental event or adoption. It is unclear at this time how each of these lineages connect to the sons or grandsons of Cezar Mattingly but the DNA evidence is clear that they are descendants of Cezar. If you are a direct descendant of a son of Broadwater Matney (Samuel, Brooks, Charles, William M., Walter J., John A., James M., Elisha, Carrell B., Phinn M., Jackson D., Isaac, Joel) and willing to provide a DNA sample, the project may fund DNA testing provided your patriarch tree can be substantiated. Please contact the project administrator. If you are a Matney family genealogist and can assist in identifying the unknown Mattingly-Matney ancestors, however speculative, please contact the project administrator.

Table 4:  The fourth table shows the subset of Matney members in the project descending from Brooks Matney and his son Walter Matney. Currently none of these project members carry SNP Y14084 associated with the Mattingly-Matney haplogroup.  The Project is seeking other descendants of Brooks Matney. If you are a direct descendant of a son of Brooks Matney (Walter, Daniel D., Charles J.,William C., Jefferson) and willing to provide a DNA sample, the project may fund DNA testing provided your patriarch tree can be substantiated. Please contact the project administrator. Priority will be given to descendants of sons of Daniel D., Charles J., William C. or Jefferson. If you are a Matney family genealogist and can assist in identifying the  ancestors of Brooks Matney, however speculative, please contact the project administrator.

This project respects the privacy of all participants. No names of living individuals are ever disclosed. The full results of DNA can only be viewed by project participants.

Table 1:  Thomas Mattingly II Descendants

There are currently four project participants, T1, T2, T3 and T4. Analysis of the raw data from Big-Y tests has identified two SNPs that are unique to this line of descent. Participants T1 and T2 test positive for SNPs Y20213 and Y20214. Participant T3 tests positive for SNP Y20214 only. Because SNP Y20214 is common in two distinct lineages, SNP Y20214 had to have been passed down from an ancestor common to both lineages. In this case, that ancestor is Leonard Mattingly II (generation 5), the 1st great grandson of Thomas Mattingly II. SNP Y20214 could have formed in any of the previous generations (2 through 5). It is certain SNP Y20214 was not carried by Thomas Mattingly I; otherwise, it would be carried by the Cezar descendants and those participants clearly do not have this mutation. SNP Y20213 appears to be unique to participants T1 and T2. SNP Y20213 had to be present in their common ancestor, William Taylor Mattingly; however, this mutation could have formed in generations 6 through 9. Results for member T4 show he does not carry SNP Y20214. This result indicates Leonard Ignatius Mattingly Sr (b. 1704) was not a carrier either and that this SNP formed with his son, Leonard "Old" Mattingly Sr (b. 1739), or his grandson, Leonard Mattingly II (b. 1764). Family Tree DNA has identified a mutation for member T4 at position hg38:15125159: T->C. A review of the raw data of all other members indicates they do not carry this mutation - it is unique to member T4. It could be a new SNP unique to T4's line of descent.

Table 2:  Cezar Mattingly Descendants

The SNP that is common to the descendants of Cezar Mattingly is Y14083 and is found in five participants representing four distinct lineages. The ancestors for participants carrying SNP Y14083 is fairly well known after generation 4, and there is some debate as to how generation 4 connects to generation 3 because of scant documentation. What is clear from the finding of SNP Y14083 is that all of these participants share a common ancestor and that ancestor at a minimum must have existed in generation 3; however, the mutation could have occurred with Cezar himself.

Table 3:  Matney Descendants

Of all the project members carrying the Matney surname, six of the seven members all test positive for SNP Y14083. These nine Matney members represent 8 known lineages and one unknown (U1) lineage. It seems more than coincidental that these seven Matney members share the same haplotype of the Mattingly members in table 2 and none of them share the haplotype of the Mattingly members in table 1. This suggests these Mateny members are descendants of Cezar Mattingly; however, the genealogical connection has not been proven.

Matney project member (B1), a supposed descendant of Brooks Matney and Jennet Young, carries none of the SNPs thus far attributed to the descendants of Thomas Mattingly I. His Y-STR profile suggests a paternal lineage connected to haplotype, R1b-DF49. It is possible the mother of one of his patriarchs was not married to a Matney at the time of his birth and she later married into the Matney clan where her son was raised as a Matney. More testing of this lineage is necessary to determine where in the Brooks Matney lineage SNP Y14084 was lost.

Matney project member (U1) is an adoptee with an unnamed father. He was positioned in the table adjacent to member M7 because they both share SNP 80210 as well as a share Autosomal DNA. It is clear this member's paternal ancestor is Broadwater M. Matney.

However, he later lists Clement and wife Anne Coyle under the pedigree of Thomas III.
  2. Willie Sean Matney is a great grandson of Alexander Pate Matney, and great great grandson of Daniel Matney, son of Walter Matney (b. 1772). Mr. Matney placed several posts in the Mattingly Surnames Forum on Genealogy.com where he offered a compelling but circumstantial case suggesting John Mattingly (abt 1690) was the father of Walter Mattingly/Matney (b. 1738).
  3. Several Matney genealogies list William Carrell and Jane (Brooks) Matney as the parents of Broadwater M. Matney. M5, a descendant of Broadwater's son, Walter J., is not convinced. The genealogies list the birthplace of William Carrell Matney to be England. It is highly improbable a Matney born in England and emigrating to the America could develop the same mutation (SNP Y14083) as his American born Mattingly and Matney cousins. Some researchers believe Broadwater is a brother to Walter Matney and Brooks Matney, and finding SNP Y85450 in the descendants of Broadwater and Walter support this claim.
  4. There is a conflict with DNA findings and the traditional ancestors of Stephen Matney which claim he is the son Clement Allen Mattingly/Matney, son of Thomas Mattingly III, son of Thomas Mattingly II. Descendant M3 carries SNP Y14083, and exhibits an allele count of 13 for Y-STR GATA-A10. This DNA evidence suggests Stephen is a descendant of Cezar Mattingly. An explanation for the inconsistency could be that this Stephen is not the son of Clement but rather the son of James Barton Mattingly, (b. 1743, MD) who married Jemima Stricklin in 1795.

Table 4:  Brooks Matney Descendants

Genealogical tradition suggests Brooks Matney is a brother of Walter Matney Jr. and Broadwater M. Matney (see Table 3, Generation 5). However, Matney project members B1, B2 and B3 are descendants of Brooks Matney and Jennet Young and do not carry any of the SNPs attributed to the descendants of Thomas Mattingly I. Their Y-chromosome analysis indicates a common paternal lineage connected to haplotype, R1b-DF49.

It is unclear why these three descendants deviate from the Mattingly-Matney haplogroup. The data suggests Walter Matney, son of Brooks Matney, passed SNP DF49 to his sons. It is unknown whether Brooks Matney also carries SNP DF49. The project would need to test a descendants of his sons other than Walter to make any definite conclusion.

Brooks Matney Descendant Notes:

  1. Y-chromosome Standard Tandem Repeat tests indicate member B1 belongs to haplogroup R1b-DF49. Panel group testing of member B1 has further defined member B1 to belong to the FGC19851 sub-clad of haplogroup R1b-DF49. Testing is ongoing to determine the terminal sub-clad for member B1.
  2. Y-chromosome Standard Tandem Repeat tests predict members B2 and B3 belong to haplogroup R1b-DF49. In addition, of the 37 STR markers, the allele difference (genetic distance) between members B1 and B2 is 1 indicating a high probability of a recent common ancestor. The allele difference (genetic distance) between member B1 and B3 is 2 indicating a high probability of a recent common ancestor. Future testing of members B2 and B3 will occur to determine if they also carry SNP DF49.
  3. The project assumes Charles Walter Matney and his father John Brooks Matney are also carriers of SNP DF49 because descendants of two of their descendants are predicted from their STR alleles to be part of the DF49 haplogroup.
  4. The project assumes William Broadwater Matney is a carrier of SNP DF49 because his descendant has been shown to test positive for this SNP.
  5. The project assumes Walter Matney, son of Brooks Matney is a carrier of SNP DF49 because a descendant of one son tests positive for this SNP and two descendants of another son, through haplogroup prediction, also appear to be members of the DF49 haplogroup.
