I posted this long ago but maybe some never saw it. This shows where yDNA WILL NOT be the same because the woman's name was taken. This clearly happened at other times in the past as well as people assuming surnames of an in-law. This is why autosomal or "familyfinder" is essential.
me multiangulating on people off of Gen. William Henry indian trader "Old John" Secretary to Indian Comission Indian Agent at Logansport Marshal. His wife Betsy (Elizabeth) LENNI LENAPE -Delaware Wilaquenaho Ketchum

This is a family photograph of Jasper and Susan (Marshall) Marshall taken about 1909 near Blue Ridge, Shelby county, Indiana The photo shows all their children and spouses.
zoomed in a little bit. The name Mungo is used alot by these people and there was a Mungo Marshall as well but I have yet to connect him to these people.
I have been getting alot of FF matches with trees that go back to a common group of people and there has to be a Marshall in there somewhere....and maybe some name swapping. ...... names like Murray/Moray, Sinclair, Stanley, Hawkins, McClain McClellane McClean McClellan..... I already know I have a lot of Morgan from other lines as well as these. This is where these trees converge
Time for a lil fun for the US Marshall's LOL. I hate the "Paxton book", it is full of things that do not belong and messes up a lot of peoples ancestry. Probably less than 5% of Marshall even come near connecting to the "US Justice John" family. It is a small lone yDNA I1 group. Even mine thought it, most all did. Maybe 900 years ago. Then there is all the R haplo. And to top it off there was a Chief Justice John Marshall OF NOVA SCOTIA too!
I used a program called genopro that lets me look at all of these people from way above. It is different than just looking at pages at ancestry or rootsweb and the like. I add everyone I can. This is how many so far of just the Marshall spelling.
This should be the Hugh Marshall that Stephanie Brown posted a question about. Let me know if it is and if you can add names to this group.
Here is apparently another male yDNA surname change
this was made a few years ago with the I haplogroups
Here is another yDNA surname change I ran across. Marshall to Shields. So a male off of Jacob Hoover Shields should have the yDNA of that John Marshall.
this one shows 3 DNA/surname changes in the same close family area
