All patrilineal male descendants of Benjamin Maple Jr share a block of 4 SNPs: BY135865, BY141141, BY151378, Y168385.

Only one Mapley has done Big Y testing, so Mapley SNPs below the BY63743 block can not currently be dated.

All but two of our Maple testers are thought to be descendants of David Maple Sr (b. 1731). It appears that no new Big Y-700 SNP was formed with the birth of David Sr. In fact, along the line of Jasper Maple, the first new SNP was FT94958, which appeared with the birth of Jasper (b. 1832) or his father, David III (b. 1800).

There may, on the other hand, be an STR value that serves as a marker for descendants of David Maple Sr.  All of David's descendants have 15 repeats at DYS497, in contrast to the value of 14 observed for a descendant of David's brother, John Maple, and for a descendant of Thomas Mapley (b. 1753). It is possible that the repeat value for DYS497 changed to 15 in an ancestor of Benjamin Maple Jr and later changed back to 14 somewhere in the line of John Maple (b. 1730), but it appears statistically more likely that a single mutation occurred with the birth of David Maple Sr.

One member of the project is a descendant of David's nephew, William Maple (b.1755), whose parentage is unknown. This tester has a value of 10 for STR marker FTY285, as does the descendant of John Maple Sr. There is currently no published value for the mutation rate of FTY285, but it appears to be relatively stable. Combined with the known genealogy, this suggests that John Maple Sr was the father of William Maple (b. 1755).

More Maple testers are needed to confirm this model.

Maple vs Mapley comparison

While we have Big Y results for only one Mapley, we have Y-67 results for 2 Mapleys with nearest common ancestor: Thomas Mapley (b. 1753). We see consistent differences between the Maples and Mapleys at 3 of the first 67 Y-STR regions. Here we also compare values for Webbers and MacLeods, who have a distant common ancestor with the Maples and Mapleys.

DYS385 - Maple: 11-15; Mapley: 11-14;; Webber: 11-15; MacLeod: 10-13

DYS449 - Maple: 30; Mapley: 29;; Webber: 29; MacLeod: 29

DYS534 - Maple: 17; Mapley: 16;;  Webber: 17; MacLeod: 16
