This project warmly invites interest in the study of the surnames Maddison and Matthewson, along with their many historical and regional spelling variations. Our research combines traditional genealogy with modern Y-DNA analysis to explore their origins, evolution, and distribution. By examining parish records, heraldic sources, migration patterns, and genetic data, we aim to discover whether families bearing these surnames share a common paternal ancestry or represent distinct lineages that adopted similar forms independently. Through this work, we hope to connect descendants, preserve the history of these names, and build a clearer picture of how they developed across the British Isles and eventually spread to many parts of the world.
