About us

The project includes men with the M285 or M342 mutations or reliably predicted to have these. Persons unsure of their G category should join instead the G-Uncategorized Project. The administrator there can help transfer you to the correct G project if your correct category is determined. A very high percentage of men with 12 at markers DYS392 have the two mutations mentioned. While M285 and M342 are equivalents, at different times the labs have used one and not the other. If your 37 or 67 or more marker values are different from men already in the project only by 5 or less values, you are reliably within M285. Twelve markers are not reliable for this unless you are an exact match at the 12 to an existing project member. The major subgroups of M285 are based on men sharing one of the L1324, L201, L1323 or L830 mutations and are included in the M285 Project. We also welcome representatives of M285 males who are deceased, unavailable or otherwise unable to join, including females as their representatives and custodians of their Y-DNA. The primary goal of the project is to identify new subgroups of haplogroup G-M285 which will provide better focus to the migration history of our haplogroup G-M406 ancestors.
