There were Liles/Lyles/Lisle/Lyle/Lile family members in Virginia and Maryland as early as the 1600s. Families migrated mainly south through the Carolinas in the 1700s. A few families migrated directly from Western Europe to South Carolina in the late 1700s. Around that same time, family members began migrating west and south, primarily into Tennessee, Kentucky, Georgia, Alabama, Florida, Mississippi and Texas. Our surname project is an effort to establish connections, if any, between these families through their paternal line male descendants. Through Y DNA test results, we have established two main haplogroups for these families. Haplogroup "I" members appear to have all come from a family that was in Virginia in the 1600s. There are a number of distinct haplogroup "R" families (at least 6 as of late 2023) that are unrelated through the Y chromosome in recent millennia.
