About us

The Kent Family & DNA Project is a FREE community of genealogy researchers interested in collaborating with one another to enhance their genealogy experience.

The Kent Family & DNA Project was established in 2006 by a handful of dedicated researchers who had developed a close rapport through researching the U.S. Southern origins of their respective Kent family patriarchs. In those early days, Family Tree DNA (our preferred genetic testing company) was a pioneer in the genetic genealogy field, and they created a digital platform to assist individuals in analyzing the Y chromosome DNA data of a male and determining whether two (or more) test participants shared a common patriarch.

A Volunteer Administrator for the Kent Family & DNA Project would review the collective genetic results to determine which KENT families were thought to be related, then publish the conclusions on its website. For over ten years, the website was generously hosted by the non-profit organization, WorldFamilies.Net.

In the summer of 2018, Family Tree DNA (FTDNA) implemented strict safeguards to not only its own customer database, but they eagerly worked with Genetic Genealogy experts to enact standards of ethical conduct necessary for not only a successful DNA project but also considering every participant's right to privacy. For this reason, the Kent Family & DNA Project's website is now hosted directly by Family Tree DNA (FTDNA).

We are proud that the Kent Family & DNA Project has now been expanded to include any researchers interested in the surname of KENT (and its variants). As of June 02, 2019, we have (350) Project Members and (21) Associate Researchers. This has culminated into (67) independent Kent family lineages! (It is suspected that some of these lineages are related, but it is undetermined via paper trail or genetic testing limitations, at this time.)

Our project's website "template" is provided by Family Tree DNA (FTDNA), and there are limitations. This section explains the sections and web pages within our website.
