Anyone who is thinking about buying a genetic genealogy test or are expecting results should be aware of the following:
- The results of a genetic genealogy test do not include a family tree. DNA alone cannot tell a person who their great-grandfather was, or what Italian village their great-great grandfather came from. Genetic genealogy is an addition to traditional genealogical research, not a replacement.

Although Y-DNA and mtDNA can be used to determine the relatedness of individuals, it cannot directly determine the degree of relationship. For example, an mtDNA test might be used to finally determine whether two women are maternally descended from one individual, as your traditional research has suggested. However, the results will not be able to determine whether the women are first cousins, third cousins, or fifth cousins once removed.
