Surname Spellings
Job, Jobe, Jobs, Jobes, Joab, Jobb
BackgroundJob, Jobe, Jobs, Jobes, Joab, Jobb
This Jobe project was actually conceived decades ago with many unanswered questions, Such as Who am I? What were my ancestors like?. Having started to research and study the Job(e) surname and our Legacy, as I prefer to call it, I've met many thorough and determined researchers. Many of these researchers, throughout the years, have taken me 'under their wing'. I was told documentation is of utmost importance. I started this study long before the use of computers. Many days were spent in musky, smelly courthouse basements browsing actual documents, trying to cipher old handwriting, trampling through overgrown cemeteries, and handwriting letters and and sending snail-mail. Eventually, I switched to a typewriter and as years progressed to a computer and finally a genealogy program. About 15 years ago, I started the extensive Jobe website, Jobe, Jobe, Jobs, Jobes - Links to Great Information ; which continues to expand with stories, photos, old letters, etc. The Job and Jobe e-mail lists were started, as well as the Job, Jobe and Jobes message boards. Since then, 25+ Job/Jobe/Jobes lineages have been added to a World Connect. These can be found under links.
As some questions were answered, there were always more to replace them. However, today with the new technology and YDNA testing, it is only fitting that the Job(e) research and my interests be widen to encompass this new scientific technology that we have available at our fingertips. I fully realize that some of our long-time beliefs and assumptions may be proven wrong, but using the two (paperwork acquired through years of research and information now available through mass microfilmed records) and comparing the YDNA testees results, I, and the other Jobe researchers, aim to search for the truth of our heritage.
The Jobe project is first and foremost seeking male Job/Jobe/Jobes for yDNA testing; a 37 marker yDNA test is recommended. The yDNA test follows the paternal lineages (father, grandfather, gt grandfather, 2nd great grandfather, etc) . Should you like to order a test, please write one of the administrators and we will be more than happy to discuss it with you (either as the testee or as a contact who wants to order a test for a relative, etc) Remember if you order through the project, it is usually cheaper; plus we're there from the start to help with any problems, etc.
Privacy
We respect our members' privacy and take steps to protect it. Yet, you can not genetically match another without that person also matching you. Genetic genealogy is a mutual and reciprocal endeavor, a team effort; it can NOT be conducted in anonymity.
Because there’s been some misunderstanding on this key aspect, we need to point out that willingness to share one's own genetic and genealogical information is an essential requirement for seeing others’ information. If those who match you can’t see you, you can’t see them. You can't "fly solo" in this undertaking.
Therefore it is a prerequisite that you sign the enclosed permission slip that comes with the kit that you receive.
Membership (Joining the Jobe Project)
The Jobe DNA Project is open to qualifying prospective members. You must be a member of FTDNA --which requires you to have a DNA test here, or transferred here from another testing site. You may be the actual testee or a contact of a testee. Also, one of the following must apply to the testee:
- You must have a surname of Jobe or one of the variants OR
- You have a Jobe in your direct paternal or maternal lineage (this does allow FF or autosomal testees to join the project). OR
- You have a yDNA match (meeting project standards) with at least one male person who carries the Jobe surname. OR
- You believe that you may have a Jobe in your direct paternal lineage.
Our main goal and focus is Jobe-surname lines, but we do have members who may be biological Jobe descendants but do not carry the surname, and others named Jobe whose ancestors may have had other names.
To truly benefit from the project and the help that we, as administrators, offer, it is important that you cooperate when we ask a question and try to answer us in a timely matter. How much you benefit from your DNA test and being in the project depends a great deal on how much you help yourself. Remember we are always here to 'guide you' and to answer any questions that you might have.
- Provide an up-to-date e-mail address for either yourself or your contact and to let us know should it change (if you're unable to actively manage your account, you can choose a beneficiary and/or a contact
- If a yDNA testee, it is urgent that we, as administrators, know you direct paternal lineage (as far as you know it) including their name, year & place of birth, year & place of death
- If you're an autosomal (ff) testee or transfer from another site; then a pedigree (as much as you know) for 5-6 generations should be provided
- Respond in a timely matter to any correspondence from matches (if you prefer, you may forward your correspondence re yDNA test matches to us and we will answer for you --but, either way, please keep us informed of any new discoveries/matches
Recommendations
- We recommend that your start off with 37 marker ydna test -- a yDNA test lesser than this (12 or 25 markers) are less precise and lead to too many matches.
- We recommend communication within the project amongst its members. Check the activity feed often - this is where we post welcomes, quick information, etc. It is your go-to place. You can also ask a general question here. Remember this is set up in the Jobe project so that ONLY PROJECT MEMBERS can view the activity feed.
- Do not block either of the administrators e-mail or FTDNA (It is urgent that we be able to contact you)
- We recommend that you view your FTDNA homepage, check the pedigree/surnames/etc. for accuracy
- We recommend that you keep your privacy setting so that where it says " Who can view my DNA results in group projects? " is set at EVERYONE (you want your matches to be able to see your grouping, etc. Remember only your surname shows, no e-mail address unless you match, and only #'s and the grouping shows
- We recommend that you tell your friends, relatives, others of the surname about the project and encourage them to be tested. For the Jobe project to be successful - we need Jobe yDNA testees.
Services (what we provide to you)
First of all, remember we, as administrators, are VOLUNTEERS. We are NOT paid and we do this to help you and our interest in the surname.
- We will order the DNA test (yDNA or FF/autosomal test for you (you can go online and pay later)
- We will help you (guide) or even set up your FTDNA home page with surnames, pedigree, etc
- We're here to answer any questions that you might have and advise you where your test is in the process of being sent out/received/batched/delayed/ etc.
- Occasionally, we will send out a newsletter to the entire project or to a particular group or just to you and a few matches
- An extensive Jobe website (url above) and many gedcoms at World Connect are provided for your convenience
- Once your yDNA results come in, it is immediately grouped and can be viewed on the yDNA classic results page
- We actively look for matches and follow up on them (if the result is not as expected, we will try and explain the reason and find out where it happened --for example, your yDNA test shows that you match a different surname, even though you carry the Jobe surname today. Remember there are many reasons and possibilities. It does not necessarily mean that you don't have a Jobe maternal ancestor. There could be adoption, grandparents taking a child and giving it their surname, a mother's previous marriage and taking the 2nd husband's surname, etc.
