Haworth-Howarth Family DNA Project Update, January 2021
Hello Cousins and Friends.
I hope that this communication finds you, your loved ones, and your friends happy, healthy, and prosperous as we begin what I can only hope will be a much different year than 2020, in many different ways.
It was in early 2018 that the founder of the Haworth-Howarth Family DNA Project asked for assistance in moving the project forward after a decade of wonderful leadership in what was, and very much still is, a rapidly changing and evolving landscape of genetic genealogy.
It was in late 2018 that we were able to begin assembling a group of enthusiastic amateurs to attempt to carry forward what was a well planned, initiated, and insightful project. I am happy to report that the group of project co-administrators, with the continued assistance of our founder, have been hard at work looking for ways to expand your project, and in finding ways to report our findings and make the information and it’s interpretation accessible and of value to our members.
The Project
The project was broadly designed to identify the yDNA (male line DNA) associated with the Haworth surname and it’s associated variants. Since the project's inception in 2008, the science and the technology employed have changed dramatically, allowing much deeper evaluations and conclusions to be made, and much more accessible to all. I am pleased to report that our project currently has 46 members, and is beginning to understand the various branches of the family generally stemming from Lancashire, England.
In addition to the members who have had a presumed Haworth-Howarth surnamed member test to the yDNA 12, 25, 37, 67, and 111 marker values, a number of testers in our group have also tested to what is currently the deepest level of yDNA that FTDNA offers, the Big Y700, and the most recent terminal Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNP’s) of our extended family are in the very earliest stages of being understood.
Additionally, we have seen atDNA (autosomal DNA) explode to the forefront as by far the most popular genealogical DNA testing available and utilized by consumers. As a project, we are analyzing and looking for ways that these testing resources can be leveraged to our advantage, and help all participants in their particular research.
Your group of volunteer co-administrators are all just like you...we have an interest in our heritage, in genealogy, and how we can make more meaningful conclusions by leveraging the study of DNA. As we sought to further our project, we began meeting weekly, and now bi-weekly (all remotely, of course) trying to lay groundwork for and push the project along. We have had modest success in ramping up our recruitment of new members, and in re-organizing and re-energizing the project as a whole.
One significant weakness that we all agree on is the fairly limited number of genetic lines represented. Thus far our results have been skewed predominantly toward the descendants of a Quaker immigrant from Lancashire to North America in the late 17th century. Most, but not all, of our testers are descendants of this man. We are actively seeking additional testers of all presumed or proven Haworth-Howarth lines, however would be most benefited by testers of different lines traced directly to Lancashire. Indeed, we are looking forward to new members to our project from wherever they may hail.
How Can You Help?
This is a group that simply wouldn’t exist without it’s membership (isn’t that the definition of a group?) I am pleased to report that this group is now up to 46 members! That’s great for us, but not nearly enough to draw meaningful conclusions, or truly suss out the different family lineages. If you look around at some of the other FTDNA groups available, some have many hundreds, or thousands of participants. We NEED and WELCOME active participation from ALL MEMBERS! Here are some suggestions to become more involved in understanding who we are as a group, where we come from as a people, and where we go from here in trying to understand our similarities and differences:
-
Login to your FTDNA account and look around. To some the information here can be daunting. Take some time to familiarize yourself again with what FTDNA has provided as part of their service to you. Don’t try to understand it all at once. Once logged in (if you need help logging in, let one of your project administrators know and we’ll try to help) go to your name in the upper right of the screen and click. On the drop down menu, click on the learning center. This is a great place to start.
-
Check out the Haworth-Howarth project webpage. From your account homepage, you should see “myProjects” on the left hand side of the screen. Under this, you should see “Haworth-Howarth.” Click here, and look around at some of what our project has to offer. I don’t want to spoil the thrill or surprise of discovery for you, so look around and give us your feedback. We have some interesting information there for you and are looking for ways to improve.
-
Ask questions! Once you’ve dipped your toe once again into your Haworth-Howarth gene pool, ASK QUESTIONS! Email us. Email other project members. Go to our activity feed on the project webpage. Your project website has a robust FAQ’s section, with numerous resources. Seek answers to your genealogical questions. I know that I personally can be intimidated when I ask questions of others, when I worry it may be a silly question. The only silly questions are those unasked! I cannot promise that you’ll find the answer you're looking for. But you will find people willing to help as best they can. All questions regarding the project specifically, and Haworth-Howarth genealogy in general are welcome, and can likely at the very least be triaged to someone who may be able to point you in the right direction.
-
Educate yourself. In addition to the learning center at FTDNA, and our own project’s FAQ’s section, I will direct you to the following websites that we have found useful. Neither myself, FTDNA, nor your Howarth-Haworth group endorse the following websites. Rather please consider them a starting point in terms of your own education and entertainment. There are many, many more sources of information and education out there. Follow your own questions and research goals, and share what you find with your Haworth-Howarth family! (Our Activity Feed is a great place to share!)
-
Evaluate your own testing. Testing, or more specifically paying for testing, can be a particularly difficult thing to do if you don’t understand, or don’t see the value in what you are paying for. Once you have answers to your questions, re-evaluate your own tests already taken, and decide if upgrading is the right thing for you. Selfishly, upgrading will always be the right thing for the project, because data is what will ultimately drive the results. But it must be the right thing for you. If you have specific research questions that the project may be able to answer, or if you have questions on what the right thing to do may be, refer to #3 above! Additionally, search your existing matches using the various search functions on your FTDNA webpage, for Haworth-Howarth variants both in your matches’ names, and in their family trees. This is one of the most effective ways to find associated families, and find out how the various lines and families are related.
-
RECRUIT, RECRUIT, RECRUIT! Allow me to be obnoxious and repeat...RECRUIT, RECRUIT, RECRUIT! The project must have loads of data to be as valuable as possible to all genetic lines of this family. The only way to acquire those loads of data, is to recruit loads of participants. Male line, or yDNA testing to the deepest level affordable, i.e. y111 or Big Y700, of a male with a presumably unbroken male line to a man named Haworth, Howarth, or variant is the best recruit to the project. The next best recruit is someone who has a Haworth or Howarth variant male or female ancestor on any line (paternal or maternal) within 5, potentially out to 7 generations, who is willing to take an FTDNA Family Finder, autosomal (atDNA) test. This is the most affordable way to start genetic genealogy available, and in addition to serving as a great recruiting tool, will demonstrate it’s value with enough participants. Additionally, only 1 tester in your family is not enough. Fathers, brothers, uncles, sons, male cousins...all are EXTREMELY important to flesh out the yDNA. EVERYONE is important to the atDNA, males and females included, as long as there is that Haworth-Howarth connection within the preceding 5-7 generations. The atDNA results, however, are open to more interpretation and we will be looking at how we can use those results specifically with the Haworth-Howarth families. Additionally, autosomal tests are the predominant genealogical DNA test available to consumers, through multiple companies. If you have had the test at a company other than FTDNA, be sure you share that with your administrators and other group participants. Together we can find ways in which to integrate those results into our project.
If this all seems daunting, challenging, or overwhelming...rest assured you’re not alone in those feelings. Refer again to #3 above...ASK QUESTIONS!
If all of this seems to be too basic to you, and you feel you have a higher understanding of the issues involved with genetic genealogy, GET INVOLVED! Contact us. We are always looking for people who possess talents that we may not share who are willing to make this project better for EVERYONE!
On behalf of the FTDNA Haworth-Howarth Family DNA Project, thank you for your time, participation, and future efforts in moving forward.
Our story remains to be told…

Composite Set of 24 Meetings of the
Haworth - Howarth Family DNA Project
(May - December, 2020)
Minutes for DNA Surname Project Meeting #24
21 December 2020
· Participating: Bill, moderator, Todd,Loran, Marilyn, Glen, Carl, and Hugh. Minutes from last meeting were approved.
· Todd led off the meeting with asking if we should invite Sharon Castle (well acquainted to us all) to our surname project group discussions. All agreed yes if she wants to participate regularly or occasionally. Marilyn revealed that she has discussed passing over her vast collection of ancestry research to Sharon down the road. Sharon said yes.
· Todd raised the subject of how to get Stephen Howarth to take the Big Y test. There are many good reasons for that. It was agreed it would be a good idea when Stephen is ready. Todd will gently nudge Stephen to do so.
· Loran raised the matter of getting more recent Haworth-Howarth immigrants to test and join our group. He is in touch with Stephen Haworth from England, a WWW wrestler, who now lives/works between Los Angles and Florida. Loran will follow up with Stephen. On this, Bill stated he would cull My Heritage, FTDNA, etc. for English relatives and reach out to them, wherever possible.
Bill asked the group what are our main takeaways from our December 7 call with Stephen?
o Hugh stated that it is obvious Stephen is a powerhouse of information on the Howarths-Haworths dating back centuries in and around Lancashire. We need to keep encouraging him to share whatever he cares to share on this front.
o Loran thought Stephen’s review of his contact with Jeremy and Christopher Haworth and their research of ancestors via Coat of Arms. Stephen cautioned us in our last call that the group that research of ancestors via the heraldry and Coat of Arms is difficult because of the selectivity of the groups in charge of the relevant documents.Nevertheless, as Loran stated so many are interested in the Coat of Arms, so we need to figure out how to employ this as part of our outreach program. Todd chimed in with the fact that not all Haworths were Quakers so the warrior class among us has a chance of tracing back to our ancient knights using heraldry tools. Bill added that groups like the ‘Coat of Arms’ group such as the ‘Guild of One Name Studies’ and ‘Armorial Ancestry’ Studies are not easy to deal with and can also be rather exclusive. Marilyn noted that the connections to any possible relatives of interest that might crop up from searches in conjunction with any of these groups will be tenuous because of the challenges of documentation from the 14th to 17thcenturies. Loran pressed the group to think of ways we could use the ‘Coat of Arms’ angle in our efforts given that so many are fascinated with having their own coat of arms.
o Bill noted that Stephen is busy, and we should not burden him with our requests and keep our contact with him through just a couple of our group. Others agreed; Todd has a few items to take up with Stephen soon.
Bill will continue his exploration of the English Haworths through the various ancestry research cites.
o Todd will contact Stephen next.
o Loran will contact Peter Haworth about his taking a YDNA text.
o Marilyn agreed to contact Julie Howarth about working with the group in some fashion. She will need Julie’s contact information from Loran and Bill.

· Loran, in working with his sister, discovered two homestead patents/grant/claims in Klichitat County, WA, of his grandfather dating to about 1913 by way of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Federal Land Records website: https://glorecords.blm.gov/default.aspx).It reflects records of sales by the U.S. Government to entities/private citizens going back to the late 1700s. It looks to be a great resource for our research. Others joined in saying this can broaden our historic view of our ancestors. Todd asked that Loran and everyone add new resource ideas to our surname project websites as we discover them.
-
-
· Bill is contemplating putting together a newsletter to inform our members about where we have been, what we are up to now, and where we are going. He will take a stab at starting the newsletter but needs blurbs from us to make it happen.
-
Bill also gave an inspirational story/background on his ancestors from Lancashire who immigrated to Canada in 1904from Lancashire to the Calgary, Canada area. These were brick makers from the old country, who became brick masons. His great uncles, two on both sides of the family, fought in WWI, some were half-brothers.He added these immigrant families never spoke about their history. Bill was able to track down a niece by marriage of one of the WWI uncles, on who had won so many metals. Unfortunately, there are no other male Haworth descendants fromthese lines. ‘It took lot of time to track her down.’ Advice – ‘keep looking.’
-
Todd added that the records show so many Haworths as fur trappers from Michigan into Canada. A couple had a fur trading company allied with the Hudson Bay Company. He has a token of these brothers who were tanners associated with this company.

Meeting adjourned; Loran will moderate the next meeting, 18 January and Glen will do the next one.
Minutes - Haworth-Howarth Surname Project
Skype Meeting #23, 7December 20200
Todd (moderator), Stephen, Loran, Marilyn, Glen, and Hugh
Todd welcomed Stephen to our meeting. This was the first time Stephen joined our meetings since Stephen retired from the group a while back.
· Stephen noted he has been busy organizing family photos with his youngest daughter and doing research on his own Howarth family history.
· Loran gave a well-rounded background on how the surname project was restored by Bill and Loran; our additions to the website and how everyone has been offering their own special expertise: Loran, Bill, Marilyn, Todd, Hugh, Glen and Carl.
· Todd mentioned his keen interest in getting Stephen to help out on the English side of our project. Stephen stated that (last name?) had been very instrumental in the early days of the project butnot in recent years. Todd said he had been in touch with her in the past and would reach out to her again.
· Marilyn asked Stephen about the early English history of the Haworth, Howarth, Hayworth name. Stephen and Marilyn reviewed how the spelling of surnames changed for various reasons such as the differences in accents and the changes introduced by the transcription of names in parish and manor records. Stephen noted that Shakespeare often changed the spelling of his name. Stephen added that certain research shows that the spelling of Haworth was dominate north of Bury, England and the spelling Howarth was dominate south of Bury (located north of Bolton and south of Rochdale in the Greater Manchester area).
· Stephen pointed out that there are some interesting leads we might follow such as with Jeremy Haworth and his son Christopher, descendants of wealthy ‘Haworth’ ancestors. They have used the College of Arms as a source for their quest to show their lineage back to the 16th Century. Stephen will reach out again to Jeremy/Christopher to get up dates on their and our work.
· Todd mentioned Walter Haworth who appears to be a descendant of George the Immigrant, but his DNA shows other English ancestors other that theJames/George lineage. Todd added that is why it is important to get DNA testingof 4th and 5th cousins to make deeper connections as to possible relationships of interest to us.
· Stephen observed we have two different groups of Haworths-Howarths of interest to us.One is the Quakers the others are all others. But getting the records from whatever source to distinguish the individuals and groups is difficult. One large problem is the second group had migrated out of the Rosendale area as the economy changed to Manchester and beyond. Haworths-Howarths in the U.S., for instance can easily be from the second group.
· Stephen spelled out some of his research over the years and his frustrations with different services and organizations. He noted that now days so many documents can be found online but require further research to verify. He noted his research into his great-great grandfather,Abraham Howarth/Haworth, who had been accused of grand larceny. Stephen’s investigation provided a much better picture of this ancestor, but it required going beyond court records.
· Todd suggested that Stephen get the Big YDNA test, which will provide considerably more information of use to the surname project.
· There was a discussion of ancient such the Frisians, the Anglo-Saxons, and even back to the Neanderthals that might be revealed by autosomal testing such as through23andMe.
· The meeting adjourned with the wish that Stephen will stay engaged with the group and that all have a wonderful holiday season.
Minutes - Haworth-Howarth Surname Project
Skype Meeting #22, 23 November 2020
· Participating: Hugh (moderator),Marilyn, Loran, Todd, Glen, and Carl.
· Minutes from last meeting were approved.
· Our heartfelt condolences were given to Marilyn and the whole family for the passing of her loving husband and ourgood friend, Bud. Marilyn asked that we‘Do Not Stand at My (Bud’s) Grave and Weep,’ a poem by Mary Elizabeth Frye.
· Todd will confirm our call Stephen for next meeting, December 7.
· We picked up on the lengthy discussion of the various DNA-family finder websites, their uses, strengths, weaknesses, inter-connectivity. Bill said he would first do a survey of our group regarding what we eachof us are using and come back with results and possibly a primer for using these various sites.
· Ancestry.com got a lot of praise as well as My Heritage.com. Discussion of Ged Match.org was educational. Ged Match is unique in it does not do testing but just standardizes the format of submitted autosomal DNA results, finds matches, very good at this, and can be used to down load/upload standardized data files into many other sites.
· Bill noted that Ged Match has had some privacy issues since law enforcement has been able to tap its databases. Though most agreed this should not affect our use of this resource it should be flagged.
· Specific cases were discussed briefly from Ancestry.com sites, our own site, and other sites such as Oliver Haworth,Olive Randall, and Paddington(?). To be followed up.
· The group discussed the Latter Day Saints’ (LDS) online research resource: ‘Family Search.’ It is immensely helpful resource based on the enormous archives that the LDS has built up overtime as a matter of their religious convictions. Again, Marilyn cautioned with this source and other sources must be used with skepticism upfront. Often the information provided by individuals is mis-characterized, improperly entered, or just guesswork. She cautions that the information you see may be possible, probable but not good until proven so by proper documentation. Loran citing his brother’s case and others agreed that Family Search and the other LDS resources that gaining insights from this online system can be most helpful. Marilyn added her mother,an avid genealogist, used the archives of LDS most successfully, long before Family Search went online. Bill seconded these thoughts with respect to his grandparents. He added that LDS is increased the cost for copies of microfilm to above $6 a copy. It is expensive to use this approach.
· It was agreed that Family Finder(autosomal testing) is a great start for those wanting to join our FTDNA project. It is cheap and yields good results. Of course, we want all to move up to the highest Y-DNA testing they can afford, which can be relatively expensive.
· Bill and Todd are still working on a couple of prepared recruitment messages we can use in our recruitment correspondence.
· How we can use various message boards,Haworth Association website, Facebook on recruitment is a discussion that willbe picked up soon.
· Hugh reached out to several Haworths in NC (Stephanus lineage) with two nibbles so far. All others in our group are likewisecontinuing their own personal recruitment.
· All agreed with Glen’s call for all ofus to enter dates of original document and date when we entered changes intoour recordkeeping and spreadsheets to make for a better timeline.
· Glen and Loran will go offline toclarify the best way to use Find a Grave.
· Again, Marilyn cautioned here withFind a Grave that treat the information found as possible, probable but good onlywhen it is proven correct by proper research.
· Loran noted the Reunion team in aseparate call today discussed thepossibility of moving back the next gathering one more year to June 2022because of the pandemic does not want to abate.
· Todd is moderator of our next meeting,7 December 2020.
· Meeting adjourned
DraftMinutes of the Haworth-Howarth Surname Project
Skype Meeting #21, 9 November 2020
· Participating: Bill (moderator),Marilyn, Todd, Loran, Carl, Glen, and Hugh
· Opening banter before formal start ofmeeting discussed what weather each of us is ‘enjoying,’, how busy we all are,and tech issues hindering our conversation.
· Bill called for approval of lastmeeting’s minutes after Hugh makes two corrections shared with the group. Minutes approved.
· Loran regretfully informed us that JimJohnson, a friend and great helper at our Association Reunions, passed away.
· Bill, over the course of the meeting, thanked Hugh for his work on the minutes, Todd for his nice recruitmentparagraph on the Facebook site, and Marilyn for her thorough piece on the earlyHaworths in Lancashire.
· Bill will reach out to Ron to thankhim for all his work though Ron will concentrate on the Association site notthe FTDNA one.
· Loran noted his recommendation fromlast meeting - - ‘Editing Humanity: the CRISPR revolution and the new era ofgenome editing,’ by Kevin Davies
· Bill and Marilyn praised Bryan Sykes’books such as ‘Saxons, Vikings, and Celts’ and the ‘Seven Daughters of Eve,’ asgreat reads on genetics, ancestry and human history. Sykes is the founder ofOxford Ancestors.
· There are many companies andorganizations that offer DNA testing, matching, and family search facilities. The ones most often mentioned in our SurnameProject are the following:
1. FamilyTreeDNA.com (aka FTDNA - thehome of the Haworth-Howarth Surname Project); it does all three DNA tests(paternal, maternal, and combined).
2. MyHeritage.com does only combined orautosomal testing.
3. 23andMe.com does only autosomaltesting.
4. Ancestry.com does only autosomaltesting.
5. GedCom.org is a clearing house forsharing genealogical data; it does not do DNA testing.
· Bill noted that FTDNA and Ancestry.comare partners. MyHeritage.com is run byan Israeli firm focuses more on European clients while FTDNA is more focused onNorth America.
· Bill, Todd, Marilyn, and all discussedseveral key issues about the differences of the sites, their strengths, theirinterconnectivity, and their privacy standards.
· Several of the group use three or moreof the various companies and organizations in their ancestry work.
· Bill noted that MyHeritage.com gave aninteresting finding that he is related to ‘George the Immigrant,’ which seems abit unusual given his family history. It appears that the autosomal test worksbetter at this site. Much to learn here.
· Todd noted there are differences inthe algorithms used by MyHeritage and other sites. This site is good to theseventh level of cousins and good for research.
· All agree that autosomal DNA testresults should be part of the Haworth-Howarth Surname Project.
· Todd noted the differences inchromosome browsers by the different sites and cited My Heritage as having agood one.
· Bill asked Todd to send an email whenhe updates the FTDNA Classification Chart to keep all informed.
· Bill looked at our Facebook site andnoted Todd’s piece on recruitment there is great. The two of them will work outa couple of versions of this and Marilyn’s separate piece that we can all usein our recruitment messages. Bill addedthat using the signature block on our recruitment emails wherein links to keysites can be given should be considered.
· Marilyn, Carl, Jessie, and Todd havebeen mining the Facebook site for recruitment.
· Most of the group is working variouscontacts to gain new recruits.
· Bill and others noted that Googlesearches on Haworth FTDNA as an example where we need to do work to makerecruitment easier.
· Glen added that Ancestry and FTDNAother sites we use have message boards, which we can use more effectively.
· Carl noted that we can fruitfullymessage via the Association website and correspondence with many members there(and possible members) on what our FTDNA website is doing.
· Todd and Bill FF is a good at $59 is good start
· Bill what is the advice to those aremildly interested; should we point to FTDNA; Todd my posting on
· Marilyn has an acquaintance has twolines with great grandmother was a Haworth, 12.5% atDNA. Bill studies of closed Jewish communitiesespecially when sharing grandparents increasing the power of the test. YDNA
· Carl we need to get our NC; we don’t have any of the Stephanus, we should target; Carl Bill has spit and blood; Carltell them our needs to get Stephanuses;
· Bill need some personal projects;should have already reach out; move along; group adopted Loran’s general fund management;
· Glen add date when adopted;
Todd some more sub grouping on the Classification Chart; Bill – Todd send a quick email as to what you haveupdated to get going again; Todd fixed up the color coding on the Chart; checkit
·
· Glenn – headstone listing; Marilyn that we ; Glenn is using the info provided by the listing on Find a Grave; willadd SQF; Bill – Glenn add the pages fromFind a Grave on his spreadsheet; Marilyn if someone is buried in a Quaker FBG (Friends Burial Ground) or common cemetery;
·
· Todd has communicated recently with Stephen, the founder of the FTDNA Haworth-Howarth Surname Project; Stephen is ready tojoin us in one of our Skype calls soon. Thegroup will finalize questions for Stephen and work out a time for a possibleDecember 7 call. This call will beinformal without any presentation by Stephen.
·
· Loran revised the piece on how we willhandle the FTDNA general funds used for DNA testing. All discussed the differences in using thefunds for recruitment or research. Bill suggested that we have three or soquestions that will make it easy to distinguish how the funds will be used. Thequestions will be spelled out in future meetings. Hugh as secretary will keeptrack of how we allocate these funds.
· All agreed that having recruits usetheir own funds first is the best way to proceed.
· Several noted that they will help fundtesting personally, directly with a prospect, not going through the GeneralFund.
· Todd added that at $59 the FTDNA FamilyFinder (autosomal) test is a great start, an initial enticement, and is cheap.
·
· Next meeting is the 23 November, thenin two weeks, 7 December, when we meet hopefully Stephen Howarth in our Skype call. We will probably start earlier given thetime difference between England and the U.S.
· Hugh is scheduled to be the nextmoderator.
· Meeting adjourned.
Minutes for Meeting #20, 26 Oct 2020
· Participating: Loran(moderator), Ron, Marilyn, Todd, Glenn, Carl, and Hugh
· Loran called the meeting to order.
· Minutes from last meeting, #19, on 12 Oct 2020, were approved.
· Loran asked what have we learned in the last two weeks? Do we have any stories?
Stories
The discussion picks up on the subject of status of a few of the George the Immigrant’s descendants including his son Absalom, who left Bucks County PA forFrederick County VA in the early 1700s and grandsons Nathaniel. Interestingly and amusingly one or more of the Quaker descendants of George had been disowned by the Friends Meeting in Hopewell VA, Nathaniel or Absalom, Jr. were also in question. Todd suggested that Jessie Haworth put up aquery in the Haworth Facebook site to gain clarification of the question(s). Todd, Loran, and Marilyn discussed the records that might be found in the ‘Find a Grave’ website regarding theFriends’ burial ground in Hopewell VA.
Todd raised another interesting story about Wade Haworth born in 1815 who
away to join Barnum Bailey to become ringmaster. The whole group discussed other noteworthy, famous (and infamous) Haworths that appear in the Scarborough Book such as Rita Hayworth, actress. Todd added found in his research that a relative in our ancestral tree is ‘alleged’ to have poisoned her children (which elicited shouts from the entire group: ‘not my relative.’
Loran, Todd, and Marilyn, and the whole group turned to the Surname project website classification chart and the process of updated information there; on those who tested to the111-marker level and to the Big Y level; and, on the recent addition of Loran’s brother Wendell to the chart. Todd clarified the matter that the Big Y results are updated over a couple of months necessitated with the reviews by geneticists. Loran stated he is working with Robert Haworth of Spokane who now lives in Germany, who might join. He suggested that we work the list of prospects with each of us taking a couple-three to recruit. He noted that we should all be ‘detectives’ (it’s fun!). Todd noted that we can promote recruitment with an announcement of a FTDNA kit sale when it comes up via our Facebook site and the Haworth Association website. Other Haworths were mentioned as prospects including Walter Haworth. Todd will follow up with Walter,
Loran added that the project administrators have had some technical difficulties in working the website and sought clarification from ‘Fernando,’ who is one of the ‘go-to’ experts of FTDNA. He thought that Ron Haworth might help out on this matter but discovered that Ron is focusing on the Haworth Association website and cannot help out that much on the FTDNA website.
Loran, Glen, and Marilyn and the whole group discussed the Surname Project general fund that is used for DNA research and testing by FTDNA as well as the Haworth Association funds that have supported Marilyn’s document research of Haworths in early Lancashire and for Ron’s expenses in maintaining the Haworth Association website. Todd noted that we have $380 in the FTDNA general fund so far. Loran noted he will revise his document on how we should think about the processes associated with classifying donations and employing FTDNA donated general funds.
Todd and Marilyn reviewed resources such as the Latter-Day Saints (LDS) archives. Marilyn noted that the records with LDS are nearly all submissions from individuals. Often these records are not accurate and that we should pay attention to the three ‘Ps’ - possible, probable, proven. One must know which of these Ps apply to each record viewed.
Todd asked Hugh if he had expanded the draft Surname Project resource spreadsheet. Hugh regretfully noted he had not and willget back to it soon. Loran offered agood, new book entitled ‘Editing humanity: the CRISPR revolution and the new era of genome editing by Kevin Davis.
Loran stated that Bill will be the next moderator.
Meeting adjourned.
Minutes for Meeting #19, 12 Oct. 2020
: Glen (moderator),Bill, Marilyn, Todd, Ron, Carl, Loran, and Hugh
, September 28, 2020 (#18),were approved.
. Marilyn says that Nicolas Haworth took the111-marker test and has joined FTDNA. Marilyn helped Nick with some of the cost of the test. Nick hails from Michigan. Some noted a good number of Quakers hadsettled there in times past. Glen asked about Harvey Sylvester Haworth and Todd asked about Jeremy (?), who have shown up in Family Finder. It was agreed that these two would be good candidates for follow ups.
.The discussion turned to deep searches for possible relatives in FTDNA. Todd and Bill pointed out that if one turns off the emails for matches at the lower marker level (e.g., 12, 25, 37), they will miss notifications about possible relatives that would need following up. Bill explained one can easily search relatives at the lower levels when needed and filter for given surnames (e.g.,Haworth, Howorth) or other relevant filters and locate prospects that way. It is important to try this method since there can be hundreds of matches, of which only a smaller number would be of interest.
Todd, Marilyn, and Bill reviewed specific members in the Classification Chart - - Harvey Sylvester Haworth, John Roger Howarths, and John Lindsey - - and noted that we need to follow up with them to expand on the information that is in the chart and possibly have them upgrade their tests. says its looking good. Bill added that there are a few members who are not active. He has tried to reach out to them, three times, but not gaining any traction with them. Todd noted we should also encourage several of the members or prospective members to join . It would help us help them It was agreed that we should even support the purchase of Family Finder for some of the prospects. Todd asked if anyone would mind if he contacts Stephen Howarth in England (expert and founder of our FTDNA project) about some questions on the chart. Everyone thought that was a good idea.
Discussion moved to the (and Research Fund). The FTDNA General Fund is how the group supports some prospects with their testing. Glen, Bill, Todd, Marilyn, and Hugh clarified how the funds should be used. In some cases, support may be required because there are indications that a test of a prospect would clarify whether the individual should be in the project and how they should be classified within the chart. This might be termed DNA ‘research.’ We can cover the test for research. Bill added that the FTDNA funds we put into the project website are credits with FTDNA and can only be used for tests. Marilyn added that her research is focused on clarifying lineage of our ancestors through archival studies here and in England. She has been doing this for decades. The Haworth Association set up this research fund that Marilyn administers and uses. She has a separate checking account in her home town for this fund, which approximates$600. All agreed that we would proceed with the two established funds as they have been used so far. Since Loran joined the call late, Glen suggested that Loran lead off the next meeting with a discussion and final resolution on the two funds. Loran agreed.
. Glenn led the discussion of our use of the Find a Grave website. He urged those who have not become registered members of Find a Grave to do so. It will make individual’s searches and site augmentation much better and help our overall work out significantly. Glen will work with any of us that wants help offline. Glen, Marilyn, and Bill noted that so many of the grave sites on the system are entries by individuals that do not necessarily have a particular interest in all the grave sites they add to the system and often do not verify the information they add to particular cases. Thus, it is imperative for all of us to do our typical thorough research to verify information on our particular cases in the system and add only properly documented information. Todd noted that we need to get our members and others in England to join Find a Grave. It will help our cause. In the next Skype call, Glen will raise issues he discovered from us in our offline discussion as to the challenges we are encountering.
Ron clarified that he has attempted to place his name on the project website as a co-administrator(website guru) without success. Bill and Loran will help complete Ron’s status on the website.
Hugh explained the draft . All thought it was a good start. Todd and others agreed that it can be used widely, attached to emails, and disturbed through other means. Marilyn suggested that we embed it into the project website. All agreed with that. Glen requested when a source is entered that the month and year of documents’ origin be added, as well as the month and year of the actual entry onto the spreadsheet. This adds a timeline feature to the spreadsheet.
Todd commented that we should consider the tabs and headings we have on the project website and find the right one for the spreadsheet. Bill noted that we all must review the tabs, headings, groupings, and sub-groupings on the website and suggest changes, additions, and subtractions. It is important that all members can easily navigate the site. We all should look through the site with this in mind so we can improve it.
Loran is the moderator for the next call, October 26.
Meeting adjourned.
Minutes for 28 Sep 2020, Meeting #18
Participating: Todd, moderator, Loran, Hugh, Glen, Marilyn, and Ron.
Minutes from the last meeting were approved.
The session opened with the call for what each wanted from the meeting today or opening thoughts. Hugh apologized for his dry and wry humor and being too casual in our deliberations at time. He added that we should be on guard to make sure we do not let politics and other unwarranted topics enter into our meetings. Others noted that we have been a bit lax and it has stepped on toes. We all promised to do better.
Todd asks Loran and Hugh about resource spreadsheet that would consolidate in one place the many documents, videos, links that help members with DNA, ancestry, and surname project efforts. He noted it could be used widely including at reunions. Hugh said he is working on an early outline of such a document and would share it with the group shortly. Loran noted some of his ideas for the spreadsheet.
Todd called for us all top itch in $25 (maybe up to a total of $100) as a donation for any prospective member’s Y-DNA test cost, when needed. He noted that we should vote as a group for the use of such donations. He added that if we build up the donation fund to show all our commitment to help. Also, if we buy a few kits to auction off at the reunion that would help. Also, we will need to keep of record of how our donations are being used. Loran stated he could come up with some language that would guide our use of donations. Hugh explained that the donations could go a) to help with purchase of DNA kits, also, b) funding research, and maybe c) to be added. He added that we should work hard to get set up the DNA kits at the reunion. Todd added to talk them up on Family Finder, etc. Todd and Loran stated we should to‘show and tell’ session, table for kits, a computer for connecting to FTDNA.Hugh added that we could use the Business Center next to the large hall, meeting room for this effort. This whole set up and schedule will require further work over coming months.
Loran wanted Ron to clarify how he is proceeding with his co-administration role. Ron seemed to have left the meeting, so the question was not answered but Marilyn thought Ron had already stepped on this matter.
Find-a-Grave. Glen reviewed the need for us all to go on the website and ‘claim’ grave sites that are of particular interest to us. Glen will expand on this in the next meeting.
Minutes - Meeting #17, 14 Sep. 2020
Participating:Hugh (moderator), Loran, Todd, Marilyn, Carl, and Glen.
Minutes for the last meeting, #16, Aug. 31, were approved.
Loran reviewed how we are doing especially with our project website: Big Y Survey should be completed if anyone has not; membership is at 40, one short of our September goal; we probably need a session with Todd to explain all the classification acronyms, it is a bit confusing; thanks to Todd for filling up the ‘Activity Log’ on a regular basis;the mechanics of the website have changed so it is not as clear about those who are automatically joining; Loran will talk to Ron about stepping up as an administrator given his roles as ‘Project Website Guru’; and, we have all done a good job on the website and generally – congratulations to all.
Loran,Todd, and Marilyn reviewed the ‘Donation’ section of the project. It appears clear how to contribute and how we can use the existing or reimbursed donations for helping others buy DNA tests.
Loran expanded on our progress and noted that we are a volunteer group and have to keep that in mind. The barriers we face are our limited time for the project, our need to be imaginative, constantly re-imagining our project, membership recruitment; and gaining more autosomal testing.
Glen and others discussed the Scarborough Books as a resource. Loran and Marilyn cautioned to note the entries are not always correct. Use them advisedly.
Hugh felt that we don’t stress helping interested parties with their family tree as much as we help with their DNA questions. This can be a recruitment factor in any of our outlets (e.g., Facebook).
Marilyn had connection problems but noted she was helping Evan Haworth in South Africa (via Association website) with his DNA test including providing a donation. The group discussed and agreed to using the project donation facility to send money and then reimburse the facility. The group felt that donating 25% for the total DNA cost made sense. Loran noted we need to keep tract of these transactions. Marilyn is also helping Nick Haworth, probably of the James lineage.
Todd and Hugh discussed the matches that should be pursued from Family Finder or the YDNA sections of the website. This is laborious and sensitive work. Todd suggested that Marilyn and Bill pursue the ones that are still in England. We need to discuss further on helping Todd with this work - ACTION ITEM.
Todd again reiterated that it helps tremendously when we pursue the 4th and 5thremoved relatives in our quest for inclusion into our membership not just our closest. This focus enriches our databases efficiently and effectively.
The group discussed Todd’s desire to have all the management group and others become members off our or more other DNA project sites such as England GB Groups – EIJ. Given it was not clear how we see the individuals of interest to us on these other project sites, it was raised that . The group will take on this task – it is an ACTION ITEM.
Carl first cousin’s mother is a Haworth. Should he add her lineage to the system? Todd –absolutely, she can do a Family Finder (autosomal) as first choice to help. It should yield a result. And, better, add the male cousin to the Y-DNA testing and project membership.
Should our project just rely on what Todd and others put on the project website for DNA and ancestry research resources or should we create a spreadsheet to capture and organize this valuable information. Open question – ACTION ITEM.
Glenn updated us on‘Find a Grave’ from the work of Kathy Meris Mill. She found 6,000 names with key information on the deceased at these sites. Marilyn says that one should be wary of information associated with these particular ‘graves; they are not always accurate but can be helpful, nevertheless. Glen has transferred 25 ‘graves ites’ from her list to his. Glen noted this transfer process has no time limit.Glen has not found that many Haworth-Howarths in this list of 6,000. Loran asked how we save a site from this list of 6,000 to our own personal account. Todd noted that at the bottom of the page you find a button for this.
Todd said he would post on our project website a black and white block print image of Quaker man in a wide brim hat from hundreds of years ago
Todd is next moderator.Hugh will help Todd with the agenda.
Minutes for 17 August 2020, Meeting #16
1. Participating: Glen (moderator),Marilyn, Todd, Loran, Ron, Carl, and Hugh
a. Approval of last meeting minutes - 3 August 2020 (Meeting #15) - was put on hold since several had not seen the draft.
b. Website is looking good. Entries are filling up sections such as ‘Activity Feeds’, ‘Links’, ‘Photos’, and ‘News.’ The membership DNA ‘Classification Chart’ is looking much better. We now have 39 members.
3. Old business
a. Approval of last meeting minutes - 3 August 2020 (Meeting #15) - was put on hold since several had not seen the draft.
b. Outstanding action items –
i. Descriptions of individual roles and responsibilities. Have three in hand and others now know we need to get the mall in. These are simple – three or four bullets of highlights of individual’s self-described roles. Hugh is sorry to have lost the submissions via an email glitch.
ii. Recruitment. Nick Haworth, relative of Marilyn has ordered the DNA test. He should be on our charts before too long. Loran, Todd, and Carl mentioned their efforts to add to our group. The Haworth site on Facebook has257 members and is active. It should be a good spot to recruit for the surname project.
iii. DNA testing – The group encourages high level of testing (67, 111, 700), they realize that many may want to test the waters with a 37-level marker test. That is okay (for starters). Hugh asked whether ii was better to get brothers and sons into the system or other relatives. Todd stated 3rd and 4th cousins would be preferred but all should be added. He also stated that if one decides to order the Family Finder DNA tests, they should order a fresh swab kit from FamilyTree DNA and not transfer their autosomal results from Ancestry.com. Unless, the test from Ancestry is the newer version of the V-2 chip from late 2016-2017. Earlier samples are from the older V-1 chip and should not be recommended as a transfer of results.
iv. DNA research links onto project website(‘Links’). Todd especially, and others, have been adding many links and recommendations on this section of the project website.
v. Personal goals for each month. Loran stressed the importance of us all putting forth one a month. His goal for the coming month is to sign up for one or more of the related projects (e.g., ’England-GB Groups, R_R1b All Subclades Group’).
vi. Female candidates for FTDNA. Again, we discussed the importance of the autosomal test and recruitment of women into the project. In addition, it will often lead to gaining more male Y-DNA tests for the project. Marilyn noted that ‘Family Finder’ in FTDNA is an important tool. On sale now via FTDNA at $59. We have not resolved the ‘open’ or‘non-filtered’ entry into the project membership. This would help build membership especially with the women. – need to resolve.
4. New business – ‘Find-A-Grave’ – Todd stated the importance of adopting the ‘memorials’ found in ‘Find a Grave’ since Kathy Merris Mills, relinquished her 250 plus Haworth/Hayworth memorials with dozens of photos and information on them. We should become a member of Find a Grave.com and transfer records to our accounts: Visit Kathy Merris Mills, ID# 46610041, www.findagrave.com/virtual-cemetery/192763.
5. Marilyn added that she believes she has some evidence that Henry Haworth (married 1630) is a candidate for being the father of James Haworth - the earliest ancestor we show in our Haworth lineage. She will report on further discoveries that might pin this down.
5. Next meeting is August 31 with Loran as moderator.
6. Adjourned
Minutes for 3 August 2020, Meeting #15
Participating,Bill (moderator), Loran, Marilyn, Ron, Todd, Carl, Glen, Hugh
Bill opened with an apology for being out of sight and busy elsewhere. He is flying helicopters on two different projects, one in the mountains starting out at 3am. He is transporting wild goats from a spot in the Olympic Peninsula (to the North Cascades).
Minutes were approved for last meeting, 6 July 2020, #14.
Summer break – the group took a summer break of one month. It was agreed we will meet every other week for a period going forward.
During the break, members kept working. The website looks good, minutes for most meetings posted, some corrections were noted (missing Loran’s participation in last meeting). The membership DNA classification chart is looking good including earliest ancestor info. We have 38 members now over 36 a month or so ago. Todd reached out the newest members. Bill and Todd discussed the fine points of contacting members who might add information or upgrade their level of tests. They will speak offline and report back about some of the wrinkles in the work that they have been experiencing.
Also, there was a discussion of DNA relatives who are not in the system that require special effort. Todd raised the possibility of considering an appropriate SNP pack for circumstances in this regard. It will be investigate and checked for availability. It was also mentioned that in most situations it is still economically feasible to upgrade to the Big Y. Marilyn mentioned that we should have project membership open / automatic once one asks to join. Therefore, there would be no filtering of requests as in the DNA classification process. The management group discussed this but did not vote on the matter.
Old business. We individually have prepared our bullets on our separate roles and responsibilities as coordinators/co-administrators. Hugh noted he lost most of the emails where the write ups were presented and asked that all re-submit them to Hugh so they can go into the record.
Recruitment has been steady. Loran, Bill, Todd, and Hugh all spoke to their efforts. We had set a goal of 41 members in September (up from 38 now). Todd noted that the‘Descendants of George the Immigrant’ Facebook website has grown from roughly75 a couple of years ago, to 125 about 8-10 months ago, to now over 250! Kudos go to Jessie Haworth for initiating and maintaining it. The group feels this is a splendid outreach mechanism. We need to consider more use of the site.
Work continues on a spreadsheet of education material, courses, linkages. Someone mentioned ISOGG (International Society of Genetic Genealogy) as a good resource. It is free and extensive. Loran and Todd will develop the spreadsheet further. Many of these educational websites and genetic tools are listed within our Y-DNA Projects LINKS area. An ask – if members find something of educational value or of general interest to please post the link on our projects ACTIVITY Feed. This will allow members at sign in, an opportunity for interaction and give educational value to their visit.
Call with Stephen Howarth will be put off until the fall.
New business. Project website and co-administrators. Loran suggested that we all set a goal per month for our work on the project. Loran, Marilyn and all discussed widely the subject of encouraging women to join the project. With autosomal testing this is much easier though women can encourage male relatives to take the Y-DNA test, too. Benefits of the ftDNA Family Finder test were spoke of and encouraged for use in recruiting. Loran mentioned that he completed the Big Y survey questionnaire. Many had not seen the request. Loran will send out a link to the survey questionnaire.
Bill raised the prospect of the Newsletter. He noted that it would be nice to have one sometime in the fall for the project website. Marilyn’s historical piece on Haworths in Rosendale might be the seed to grow the Newsletter.
Next meeting is scheduled for August 17 with Glen moderating.
Meeting adjourned.
Participating: Bill, Loran, Marilyn,Carl, Todd, Glen, and Hugh.
This meeting was an open discussion for the management members to exchange their views on how the project is going.
Todd posted on the project website‘Frequently Asked Questions’ (FAQs) obtained from David Farrel with the DNA project: England GB Groups EIJ. Marilyn raised the question as to whether the FAQs on our project website should be more tailored to our work. It is an open item.
Question - should we also post on the website Marilyn’s suggested reading - ‘The Family Tree Guide to DNA Testing and Genetic Genealogy,’ by Blaine Bettinger? It seemed there was approval. There was less enthusiasm for posting other readings that might be of interest to the group but were not focused on genealogy and genetics that would directly help members with advancing their surname project objectives.
Marilyn noted she had submitted her write up on her coordinator job of genealogist/historian. At this point we have most but not all write ups.
A long discussion ensued about membership, the numbers, the status of members on the Y-DNA Classic Chart on our website, how we can advance their status and keep track of progress. It was clear that there are those members who are active, fill in necessary information for the Chart, and upgrade their Y-DNA tests as more advanced tests become available. There are many, though, who less active and, out of touch with the project. Several stressed that the 67-marker should be considered the starting point and taking the Big Y 700 marker test is the gold standard. All members should be encouraged to go beyond the 67-marker test and do the SNP tests, too.
Over a long period of time,Bill, Loran, and Todd have reached out to members to offer help on upgrading their tests and records. Likewise, four months ago, Bill made a big effort to reach all members again. All this work is providing results, but it isslow and sporadic. Given privacy issues, it is best that these three continue the work given their understanding of the outreach approaches and the sensitivity of members on DNA matters.
The conversation focused on classifying members on the charts in terms of the test levels and completeness of information. There was no clear answer at this point. Bill stepped forward to lead the membership effort and address many of the issues.
Todd and Carl stressed the importance of outreach at the local and regional effort. Members who can address others personally is a vital addition to our national meetings, media, and website efforts. All were reminded to continue their contacts with relatives and acquaintances to get them started with FTDNA.
The meeting adjourned.

Participating: Hugh(moderator), Ron, Todd, Marilyn, Loran, and Glen
Thanks to Marilyn for the reading suggestion - ‘The Family Tree Guide to DNA Testing and Genetic Genealogy,’ by Blaine Bettinger; and, thanks to Todd for posting a link to a great video by James Irvine ‘Using Y-DNA in Practice’(2020), - https://youtu.be/5Bo0MLro2nA. Per chance, his first link led to another great video by Maurice Gleeson ‘Using Y-DNA to Research your Surname’ (2018), - youtube.com/watch?v=u5xHtppMNJY. Loran added for our consideration a scholarly book ‘Fatal Invention: How Science, Politics, and Big Business Re-create Race in the Twenty-first Century,’ by Dorothy Roberts, September2012.
Minutes for the last meeting, 22June 2020, were approved.
Old Business - Outstanding Action Items
1. Recruitment– Updates: Hugh got his brother, Roger, started with a FTDNA test. Glen and Loran are pressing forward with relatives and acquaintances. Loran noted his sister is particularly good at family trees and hopes to engage her more in our larger efforts. Glen is checking out a Judge Haworth in Oklahoma.
2. Progress on individual write ups on ‘coordinator’ jobs (e.g., secretary, genealogist and historian, geneticist, website maintenance, educator) – Updates:
a. Hugh submitted his draft write-up as Secretary,
i. Record minutes of meetings and post on website (under the ‘News’ tab),
ii. Review draft agendas for our meetings, and
iii. Periodically update our ‘Goals, Work, Schedule’ with indications of progress and shortcomings.
b. Marilyn and Todd noted that there was an overlap in their two roles(Genealogy-Historian and Geneticist). They will sort that out. Yet, Todd did offer his perspective on being the Geneticist,
i. Genetic interpretation of STRs, SNPs, & NPEs;
ii. Public relations - philanthropy and helping to bridge our Project, the Haworth Association, the Haworth Reunion, & social media communities, and,
iii. Y- DNA recruitment, especially in the Southeast Region of the U.S.
3. Todd also reiterated the importance of our members joining 4 other ftDNA projects: England GB Groups EIJ, English Mapping, R _R1b ALL Subclades, R U106(R1b-U106). In this regard he noted three goals– that: 1) the 6 Haworth-Howarth project management coordinators become active in the other 4 projects; 2 ) increase the clarity and importance of the other projects to all our surname project members; and 3) advance educational opportunities for all members.
4. The Education Role is shaping up with Loran starting a draft spreadsheet of courses, resources, and linkages for members DNA and FTDNA edification. Todd &Marilyn will pitch in on this effort.
5. Call with Stephen Howarth – questions from the group:
i. Hugh’s Q’s: ‘Stephen, how do you see progress with our Haworth-Howarth surname project over the last decade? How do you see progress on DNA testing and reporting in recent years and its impact on our surname project?’
ii. Todd’s Q’s: What key STR markers and SNPs are known to distinguish and or differentiate our Haworth -Howarth subclades? And, has any recorded archaeology work (e.g., repatriation or reinternments from a Parish or Meeting House cemetery restoration) been done in the Rosendale, Middleton, Lancashire areas in which DNA samples may have been taken that would pertain to our lineages?
6. We wanted to get an update on the new co-administrators, how they are doing on the project website with their new roles, but we did not have time to discuss.
7. New business: Hugh is willing to review our‘Goals, Work, Schedule’ and suggest tentative milestones and dates. He would then circulate the expanded document for discussion. There was some confusion about what this set of ‘Goals’ is but we will wait to see what Hugh produces.
8. Todd will moderate the next meeting (7/6/20).
9. Meeting adjourned.
Minutes for 22 June 2020, 12thMeeting
Participating: Loran (moderator), Marilyn, Ron, Todd, Carl,Glen, and Hugh
The group approved the minutes for the last meeting – June15, 2020.
The group reviewed a busy week of email exchanges by management members on Haworth-Howarth ancestry and DNA testing. One set of emails was prompted by Todd’s request to get the paternal lineage of all the management members to include basic information such as correct name, dates of births and deaths, locations, along with the same information on wives as far back as possible. Todd will use this to advance the DNA-SNP research that he is conducting. Most members provided the requested information. Marilyn and other members of the group were able to correct information on entries for a few ancestors that lived in the1600s and early 1700s.
Todd asked that the management members upload their Big Y results into a rapidly growing database called the ‘Big Tree’ and the associated‘Y-DNA Data Warehouse.’ Adding our results will help refine our specific genealogical history within a broad group of Western European ancestors. This may well become an ‘’ for the group.
The ancestral conversation prompted another line of discussion about early Quakers in England and the current management members’ travels there to see the landmarks (e.g., meeting houses, cemeteries) of our forebears in the Lancashire and London areas.
Under old business, several outstanding action items were reviewed. First, was an update on recruitment. Marilyn, Loran, Ron, Todd, and Glen discussed their efforts noting that more time will be needed to succeed with their relatives or acquaintances.
Following up on last week’s conversation, Loran noted that we need to clarify what we are seeking to do by calling for donations to the project. He suggested that we prepare a statement about donations so all will understand why they are being sought and how one can contribute (outstanding ). This statement can be used on the project website as well as with meetings of the Haworth Association.
Loran also asked that we each write out what we see our individual vision of our roles and responsibilities are as we have taken on different coordinator roles (outstanding ).
Loran will initiate a spreadsheet that will give key information on courses, research sites, and genealogical resources to shape the education efforts that will advance the effectiveness of the project’s members. All members of the management group are encouraged to add their suggestions to the spreadsheet ().
The group is looking forward to a conference call with Stephen Howarth. The group, though, should pull together a few questions for Stephen to give him a sense of what we would like to hear from him ().
Under new business, Loran asked if the three new co-administrators (Todd, Marilyn, and Hugh) had explored the administration features of the project website, have a hang of it, or have questions. It appeared that the three will need more time before reporting their progress on this matter.
On the agenda was the topic of updating our project’s goals and work schedule. This was tabled since the hour for the meeting had elapsed.
Hugh will be the moderator for the next meeting (6/29/20).
Meeting adjourned.
Minutes for 15 June 2020, #11
Present: Glen (moderator), Marilyn,Ron, Todd, Hugh, and Loran.
Approved minutes from last meeting(6/8).
Shout Outs, Good Wishes: Glen asked about Marilyn’s back problems. She said with shots and medications it is better.
Group discussed outreach to gainnew members. Glen is checking an acquaintance in Oklahoma. Ron ‘struck out’ with one relative. Hugh sent a kit to his brother, Roger. Marilyn noted that John Howarth in England was not a good candidate for a y-DNA test kit. Todd noted that tests any lower than at the67-marker level were not that helpful to the projects work. He recommended that we encourage prospective members to test at the 111-marker level. He added that the price of tests has become quite reasonable. The group discussed supporting members who take a 67 or 111-marker level test by donating to get the Big-Y also completed by the new member. Recruitment will remain an ‘’for some time.
Group discussed the steady stream (excessive?)of ‘new family member finds’ showing up in our emails, which appear to becoming from a ‘Pennington.’ Todd and Marilyn will be looking into this matter. Todd noted one can turn off selected emails such as these in account settings. The group corrected Hugh about sharing information on kit numbers and names in the same email when sent only to the Management Group.
Outstanding ‘Action Items’
1. Assignments.Three coordinator roles remain unfilled: 1. Project Education, 2) Project Membership,Recruitment and Retention, and 3. Newsletter. So far, no one has stepped forward on these three. Loran volunteered to put together a spreadsheet that would list different education opportunities for the Management Group on subjects of interest in the areas of genealogy, ancestry, and surname projects. Todd and others have suggested several sites and links already. The spreadsheet will better organize the whole effort (). Also, Hugh noted he was having a problem getting his new ‘co-administrator’ status sorted out. Todd guided him through the steps to accomplish this.
2. Bios and pictures for the project website – still need a couple.
3. Management Group should review and update our account settings. It is clear that a few will need to enter or correct their earliest ancestors’ information. Marilyn pointed out that unfortunately certain mistaken names and dates have been accepted when research to date has not proven some ancestry assumptions. On a related matter, Todd added that it would help him considerably if each of the Management Group would provide him with each of their lineages showing the paternal ancestors and their wives names including dates and locations of births and deaths. (outstanding ‘)
4. Group discussed the pending conference call with Stephen Howarth. The group will present a few questions for Stephen at the next meeting to help Stephen with preparation for the call. After the next meeting Loran will call Stephen to find a suitable time for the call. (Note:England is 5 hours ahead of ET and 8 hours ahead of PT.) This is an outstanding ‘.’
5. Privacy matters. A reminder to the group to review the following links on FTDNA privacy and participation policies:
1. www.familytreedna.com/legal/privacy-statement
2. www.familytreedna.com/legal/terms/group-project-participation
3. www.familytreedna.com/legal
Loran will be the moderator for the next meeting (6/22/20).
Adjourn
Minutes for 08 June 2020,#10
Present: Bill, Todd, Ron, Marilyn, Loran, Glenn, Carl, and Hugh.
Todd raised the matter that some are reluctant to join the surname project because of the cost of a y-DNA test. All agreed we can help at least on a case-by-case basis. Loran adds that we need to further understand how we select whom we help with donations. Marilyn, as Genealogist, will play a lead role in this filtering process (outstanding ).
Bill calls meeting to order.
The group approves minutes from last two meetings (5/25 & 6/1).
Bill wanted to know if the group wants to stay with Skype as our meeting platform or consider alternatives such as Zoom. The group agreed to stay with Skype.
The group agreed to consider itself the Management Group of the Haworth-Howarth Surname Project.
Bill asked that we all make sure each of us posts in their profile his/her earliest ancestor noted on the webpage. Marilyn noted that many have James Haworth of Gambleside, father of George ‘the Immigrant’ Haworth as the earliest ancestor. She underscored that we do not know when James was born but do know he died in 1678, the date which should use in our postings.
Bill reminded all the importance of the FTDNA privacy and participation policies. All should check the following links on the issue (outstanding ):
· www.familytreedna.com/legal/terms/group-project-participation,
Bill would like to go ahead and open all y-DNA results to the spread sheet within the
project keeping it .” Question – should we identify
results by kit numbers or member names associated with the results(outstanding )? “We have heard back from approximately half of the registered users, with only 1 project withdrawal and one permission revocation.”
Review of naming and placement of tabs on homepage of website. Bill noted that administrators cannot rename tabs on the website homepage.
Bill reordered the minutes on the website with the most recent first. Marilyn wondered if we should post the minutes. Loran said it was a good way to show all what we are doing, show the activity of the group. The group agreed that the lengthy set of minutes are helpful, and we should continue to present them to the group. An abbreviated version is also useful and could be posted on the website. Loran emphasized that we need to indicate results and outstanding actions in each setof minutes.
Bill and Loran are ready to place the group members’ biographies and pictures on the website. There is one each of bios and pics still missing.
Bill listed the group’s assignments so far: ‘Administrators’ -Loran and Bill, ‘Project Secretary’ - Hugh, ‘Website Maintenance and Development’ - Ron, ‘Genealogies and History’ - Marilyn, and, ‘Genetics Interpretation’ – Todd. Loran and Bill will officially place these individuals as ‘Co-Administrators’ of the project.
Bill noted that several positions remain to be filled: ‘Project Education,’ ‘Project Membership,’ ‘Recruitment and Retention,’ and ‘Newsletter Editor’ (outstanding ).
Hugh raised the issue of how the Big Y results are posted on the website, specifically in the matches page under the columns ‘Haplogroups’ and‘Terminal SNPs.’ Bill will check into how to expedite the posting of this information.
Loran suggested and the group agreed to keep meeting weekly through June. Then, we may well go to bi-weekly or monthly meetings.
Glen will moderate the next meeting.
Adjourned.
Minutes for 01 June 2020, #9
- Bill calls the meeting to order
- Members Present: Bill, Loran, Marilyn, Ron, Todd, and Hugh
3. Todd complimented Loran on his picture (posted by Bill on the project homepage). The photo captures Loran in his jet pilot flight suit with caption ‘the NASA graduate.’ (This is so timely with the launch of Space X Dragon from Cape Canaveral just prior to the meeting.)
4. Minutes from the last meeting (25 May) were tabled. Todd and Bill will discuss offline and bring them back for approval at the June 8 meeting.
5. Updates to The Project from this week. Bill stated that recently there were no new members added and no activity feeds. He also noted that he and Loran had further discussed the‘Committees and Group Organization’ given below. This topic became the principal issue throughout the meeting. Bill suggested that we reverse the order of the minutes presented on the website.Instead of the most recent being added at the bottom of the list, he thought that the most recent should be on top, followed with the rest in date order to the bottom with the oldest minutes last. The group unanimously agreed with Bill’s proposal. Marilyn asked about the names of the tabs and where does one find the minutes now on the website.Bill noted that they are given in the ‘News’ tab. He listed the currently available options for tabs (i.e., overview, news, project statistics, background, goals, results, code of conduct, bulletin, FAQ, post to group, post a picture, ask a question). Hugh added that a few of the possible tabs can be presented horizontally across the top of the home webpage (i.e., post a photo, photos, ask a question). These tabs are complimented by the topics listed vertically on the left of the page (i.e., about, DNA results, surnames, activity feed, photos, links). Marilyn and Hugh asked whether the names of the tabs could be changed to reflect their content more accurately. Bill said he would have to check out that possibility.
6. Bill stated that we still do not have all the photos to go along with the bios. The bios and photos when ready will be posted on the project webpage. Loran reminded us that we still need a piece for our “Background” tab on the website.
7. Loran suggested that we all recruit more of family, friends, and acquaintances to join the surname projects. He said he was going to try to reach out to at least one person a week. He noted that ancestry and family trees are great discussion items. We all should be prepared to raise the subject more frequently with people, with whom we come in contact. Hugh noted he reached out to a cousin last week suggesting he join the Haworth-Howarth surname project.
8. Loran also noted that we might use Zoom (or other teleconferencing methods) to reach out to more folks. Others, including Marilyn and Todd, seconded this idea and mentioned.
9. Loran and Bill remarked that they are still learning the ropes of administering the project website. They added that all the group should make sure they understand the role of administrators and co-administrators as well as the basic ins-and-outs of working key features of the website. Loran pointed out that we all should review and update our account settings.
10. Loran complimented Marilyn on her historical piece ‘The Early History of the Haworths’ that she shared with the group via email. Loran suggested that it be posted on the website.
11. Bill initiated the discussion of the list‘Committees and Group Organization’ by noting that this was an early tentative list to organize our thoughts about roles and assignments within the group. He added that Hugh volunteered to be the Secretary for the group with Bill as backup. He thanked Marilyn for stepping up as the leader of ‘Genealogies and Histories.’
12. Bill and Loran proceeded to discuss the roles in the ‘Group Organization’ that had not been filled, the first being‘Website Maintenance and Development.’ Loran and Bill thought that Ron was a natural for this role. Ron pondered the matter but did not commit. Then came ‘Genetics Interpretation and Project Education.’ Bill proposed Todd to lead this effort. Todd resisted. He explained his objections to job titles being referred to as committees. He felt our membership was relatively small and the leadership group could handle nearly all the work not through committees but by individuals stepping up wherever and whenever needed.Bill expressed the need for clear organizational structures to ensure success of our efforts in a complex project setting. Loran supported this point. Todd noted that we can be overly ‘bureaucratic’ and hurt ourselves by being so. He added that he still was uncomfortable with the whole matter of privacy and how our project was going to handle these issues. He stated that he personally felt confident in his integrity and therefore his ability to deal with the privacy issues. He reiterated the fact that this issue was a principal reason for Stephen to pass the administrator role on to others. Todd underscored the need to make sure we are fully up to speed, collectively, on privacy matters of the project and the concerns of all members and prospective members in this regard. After further discussion, Todd agreed to lead ‘Genetics Interpretation’ but not‘Project Education.’
13. Loran and Bill reminded all that we need to clarify what we want in our descriptions of the roles we undertake. This can be ongoing, but we need to ensure that all are comfortable as to what they believe they are doing in any given role and the group understands the whole‘Org Chart’ and all its components.
14. Hugh asked who the moderator for the June 8 meeting would be.Glen would be the next moderator by the current rotation. Given that he was not in attendance, Bill said he would moderate again. He asked that all go over the agenda for today’s meeting in preparation for next week’s meeting.
15. Adjournment. Bill called for adjournment. The group accepted and said good-bye.

Later, bucolic pictures of Lancashire, possibly of the areas around Rochdale, Hasslingden, and Windybank could be used. Several pictures would be rotated over periods of time as the banner. Todd stressed the need to have the ‘Join’ button prominently displayed on the homepage but not in the banner photo. Bill explained that there are a good number of tabs that could be considered for the top of the homepage(e.g., ‘Goals, Background, Post a Picture, Post to Group, Ask a Question’). So far, only three have activated (i.e., ‘Overview, News, Project Statistics’). Bill noted that six might be the ideal number given the space for the tabs. Bill and Loran will discuss the activation of another three tabs. There is a box to the left of the homepage that provides for links to topics that cannot fit into the top-level tabs. Bill noted that there had been no new queries on the site lately. Marilyn added that she would move forward with a history of Haworth-Howarths that would be an indispensable part of the website.

f. The team discussed the draft given below. There was considerable back and forth on what geographical areas should be highlighted in the description such as Lancashire and Yorkshire. Other areas in England may be added. Todd pointed out that with more members taking the Big Y DNA tests there will be an amplification of the geographical origins of our membership. The team settled on this description to be used for the time being.
‘’The Haworth-Howarth Family DNA Project encourages and helps researchers to find their family roots through sharing of information and DNA testing. Holders of these family names and their variants can usually trace their forebears back to the Lancashire Haworth family - but we may find Haworths who derive their name from other locations such as Haworth in Yorkshire. All bearers of these names and spelling variations who can provide a yDNA sample are welcome to join the project.Holders of other names who have grounds to think their inclusion appropriate should contact the Project Administrators.
While currently focused on the yDNA variants associated with these surnames, we recognize the ever changing nature of the science and study of DNA as it relates to genealogy and welcome members who have an interest in other variants of DNA, including atDNA.
Surnames in Project: Haworth, Howarth, Howorth, Herwarth,Heyworth, Hayworth.’’’
g. The team discussed Loran’s draft for Haworth-Howarth DNA management group, presented here. It was accepted as appropriate.
‘’Support the Haworth-Howarth YDNA project in developing achievable objectives for the project (short and long term), develop plans for obtaining these objectives, suggest and implement how to measure progress, and support team building.’’
h. Loran,Marilyn, and Bill have been in conversation with the project’s founder, (residing in England) to share with the team via conference call his experience, ideas, the history of the project, and his possible willingness to rejoin the team in a fashion of his choosing. Marilyn will share with the team several key documents(e.g., two newsletters) penned by Stephen for the project years ago that should be reviewed by the whole team before we call upon Stephen again.

Yes,I shall be happy to do a Skype session on the history of the group though you will need to give me some time to prepared since the early days in 2008 are beginning to seem rather long ago. In UK we found that Skype did not cope well with the exponential increase in demand over Easter and a lot of people have found Zoom better. I do not know whether that was a logical issue.
Iattach a copy of an exchange of memos between Terry Barton and myself and a copy of the World Families spreadsheet (which I think you have already got and which has to be used with care given that it includes the names of the participants). I think that if you follow the thread of the correspondence it will give you the guts of the issue. Quite a lot has been written about 464because it is so odd a marker. For a 'learned article' and greater confusion follow this link: http://dna.reinyday.com/464/
Incidentally must correct an error. I had remembered the connection at FTDNA as Tom Kirscher. In fact as you will see from the attachments it was Thomas Krahn.

● Members Present: Bill (late), Loran, Hugh, Marilyn, Todd, Ron,Glenn (did I miss anyone?)
- Approval of minutes from Skype meeting of April 20.
● Previous minutes approved.
● Discussion about Hugh’s proposed meeting minutes format. No objections.
- Updates to The Project from this week. Loran and Bill
● Loran updates us with his experience as he digs deeper and is learning more about yDNA as it relatesto the project.
● Loran updates us with his experience navigating the bulk email function through the FTDNA servers. Work in progress with learning occurring.
● Bill has added severalprevious results to the visible yDNA spreadsheet. Reminder that we have permission for almostall current project members to do the same, but that we are progressing slowlyjust to give project members the ability to update their account settingsshould they so desire. Bill anticipatesadding all previous members to the visible results soon.
● Bill has begun workingon sub-grouping. Early days and a work in progress, but nothing unexpectedright now.
- Discussion of project description. Do we admit additional DNA tests? Resolution.
● Resolution tabled. Rousing discussion as usual. Autosomal results are in general approvedof...mtDNA results not so much. Groupagrees to revisit with open minds as we learn more.
- What then are the definable goals to be accomplished, and published on the “GOALS” tab of the webpage.
● Loran gives a generaldescription of how he views goals, what they define and how we get there...onegoal being that we are family and how we can bring many different memberstogether as a family. One way specificallywould be for individual members tointroduce themselves with brief bios for the website, not only for the activityfeed but also to be archived within the site.
● Goals lead to products. What is the deliverable here? Hugh gives his perspective as his product being filling out/completingour family tree/history.
● Some discussionregarding Marilyns cousin and enabling the general fund to solve specificgenealogical problems.
● Point made aboutrelevance of the atDNA in general and in our project specifically relating toMarilyn.
● Todd speaks to a goal ofenlisting as much DNA as possible.
● Loran presents anotherlong range goal of trying to interest and engage our children andgrandchildren.
● Hugh wonders about DNAtesting and health related issues….a way to hook in our descendants? Marylin presents the case of the cysticfibrosis gene.
● Hugh mentions the Brontesisters and our unknown lineage to Haworth Howarth Yorkshire as a hook for newmembers?
- Is someone willing/capable of writing a piece for our “BACKGROUND” tab on the website?
● This is likely besttackled as a group effort...individuals bring forward our history as theyunderstand it and try to consolidate it in one place. Hugh reminds us that Stephen began theproject and extends beyond the George Haworth group. Administrators offer to curate and compile,if others can get them bits and pieces of the history of this project.
- Are we interested in sprucing up the splash image on the website? Anybody with any skill in that area?
● Marilyn speaks about hertrip and has some pictures.
● Ron has the skill andability.
● Folks should submit somepictures to the group.
- Reminder/discussion on attracting membership. The Haworth Association of America is a robust repository of potential testers. REMINDER...many members of the Haworth-Howarth Family DNA Project are NOT descendants of the early American Haworths. Outreach to other sources of new members?
● This discussion wasincorporated for the most part under agenda item #4
● For the next meetingcome up with the different advertising resources...in Lancashire, Haworths ofAmerica, etc.
- Reminder...please write a short introduction and post a picture on the feed. Let’s get to know each other a bit.
- Who is heading up the meeting next week?
● Glenn
- Good of the Order.
● What is the privacysetting of the project website...how public do we want it? Keep it behind the members login? Are kitnumbers necessary on the spreadsheet? Wewill continue to discuss and research privacy issues.

3th Meeting
(4/20/20)
Family DNA Haworth-Howarth Skype Meeting– Ydna
· Participants were cousins; Loran,Bill, Ron, Marilyn, Hugh, and Todd. Cousin Bill had technical videodifficulties but hung in like a trooper with some old school audio. Cousins Carl & Glen were absent due to previous engagements
· Introduction from Loran with hello’sfrom attendees. Cousin Loran announced that he has upgraded tothe Big Y test, which bought down a thunderous applause from the gallery….Congrats cousin Loran you are #3 !!! We've tripled ourY-DNA participation in just two weeks !
· Reiterated were the DNA project exerciseslisted in the prior Agenda announcement (see below). Theywere not verbatim but highlights from the few sights I felt we shouldconsider adopting. Specifically mentioned were in the; 1) R_R1b ALLSubclades - *Codes of Conduct, *FAQ’s, and *Links 2) England GBGroups - FAQ’s and *Links 3) English Mapping - *About Us and*Project Statistics.
·
o This exercise is intendedto familiarize our group members with navigating through successfully ranprojects, commonly used terminology, and the “Join Projects"participation process. I chose these particular links because theypertain to our direct Y-DNA lineage as proven by Alleles / STRmarkers and the positive SNP results that most of us share. Please makesure to check out each Projects activity feeds. These links are generallylocated in the upper left hand of each "enter page”, directly above the Administrationlist. This box contains many fields that could be consider amending oradopting into our project, if seen fit and useful. There are usuallyadditional drop-down links on the “ About page” that will listeach projects; Overviews, Background, Goals, News, Results, and ProjectStatistics. Make a list of any highlights or ideas you would like tosee implemented in Our Project. Prepare to spend about 15-30 mins ineach of the 5 groups. WARNING ! It’s easy to get lost inthe discussion forms/activity feeds if your not careful. Theycontain such a wealth of genealogical information and ancient historythat its easy to spend a few hours just clicking from one link to thenext…
o When looking at the DNA Results spread sheets, remember to raise the tested Y-DNA marker level on the largerprojects. Some contain 20 - hundreds of pages. Raising the testinglevel # of markers allows you to quickly get the gist of how sub-groupsare set up, matches are filtered, all in classic or colorized form. The last page or two usually can contain the “ungrouped” members. Some have only a few ungrouped while others fill a couple of pages. Somehave sub-groups within the UnGrouped !
o
· Cousin Hugh ask about additional projectsand the split "scope of things”, which prompted a discussion aboutmitochondrial (Marilyn’s K2, Todd H1), autosomal (Family Finder), Y-DNA, andthe direction we are headed as a group. After cousin Hugh admittedto not doing his home work and being unaware of the revised Mission Statementthat cousin Bill sent out via Group Email, cousin Bill laid outthe possibility that indeed other projects could be added in the future. He expressed that much of his reasonings about most of his decisionsin the group will usually lean towards inclusiveness VS. excluding potentialmembers and always based on the good of the group. (pleasecorrect me cousin Bill if I misinterpreted) He then mentioned and read anemail sent to him by a ftDNA member expressing an appreciationand personal interest in our project. After additional thoughtsand input by attendees Cousin Loran ask the group to thinkabout a 1, 2, 3 … idea/plan, eventually allowing a better group prospective. All seem to agreethat Y-DNA is the main consideration in our Haworth-Howarth project. Cheers !
· Administrators announcedthat some areas of our project are now public and content has been added. The joining process and email impromptus have proven successfulwith cousin Loran initiating his brothers cooperation, for “thecause”. Cousin Bill announced that our Y-DNA results were being added tothe spread sheets and available to view for members. Bill noted that someof the participants have yet to respond to a bulk email recently sent out,so their results would be delayed accordingly. Privacy issueswere explained and briefly discussed. I mentioned having a concernor possibility that an unanswered recipients results would notbe visible for interpretation or worse yet deleted. I recalledthat we as donors have chosen beneficiaries and or managers throughFamilyTreeDNA’s website and that may ultimately decide if someones DNA isremoved from the public. I believe and declared that our project hasexisting “Angle” DNA donors who may not have time or care to partake inany website involvement. Some donors will have only done so inorder to document their family branch. Others may simply wish to help advanceour Family’s Surname / DNA project for prosperity. I was assuredthat removing any old results from Stephens Howarth’s initialwork was not intended and would be avoided at all cost.
· Cousin Loran adjourned our session.
· For full disclosure; If not already obvious I have never been ask, much less attempted, to transcribe minutes from a meeting. I tried totake appropriate notes but that didn't last long. My mind races badenough so if I’ve missed something or mistaken my order of events, I leave itup to the Admins to catch…
· With much love from your kin inTennessee, Todd
· Next call will be Monday, 4/27/20, 8 pmET. Bill will lead the call.

a. Currentdescription on project website: ‘The Haworth-Howarth Family Project encouragesand helps researchers to find their family roots through sharing of informationand y DNA testing. Holders of these family names and their variants can usuallytrace their forebears back to the Lancashire Haworth family - but we may findHaworths who derive their name from other locations such as Haworth inYorkshire, and all bearers of the name who are able to provide a YDNA sample, and all spelling variations, are welcome to join the project. Holders of othernames who have grounds to think their inclusion appropriate should contact theProject Administrators.’

c. Next meeting is scheduled for 13 Apr 2020 at 8pm Eastern Time.
d. Some other things to think about:
i. Irecommend a written agenda for the next meeting and I think it would be good ifeach of our DNA members rotate in turn suggesting the agenda for the nextmeeting. Hugh, how about setting up thenext meeting agenda? Please let me know.
ii. Iam not suggesting this for the next meeting, but I believe we need to talkabout future proposals at the next meeting and that the proposals include aroad map. The purpose of the road map isto communicate a plan and goal(s) that educates all the current DNA members onthe skype group as to the task(s). Itshould inform our group on how to accomplish the intended plan/tasks, the meansfor accomplishment, a timetable, who is involved, how privacy concerns are met,and if possible measurable milestones. Thebottom line is to keep all in the group informed, educated and out of trouble.
iii. Aswe have time, we need to bring up suggestions for the next reunion as itrelates to DNA information.
iv. Letus walk before we run.
All the best to all
Stay healthy
