About us

Hatteras_Yline (aka Hatteras-Fathers) was established to reconstruct the early families of Hatteras and Ocracoke Islands using Y-DNA. For example, many families have oral histories of their ancestors being Native American and this reconstruction project may be able to confirm or refute these stories. To be eligible to join you must be a male, that has tested your Y-DNA to some extent, and your paternal (surname) line must extend to men that lived or may be presumed to have lived on Hatteras, Ocracoke, or nearby islands prior to 1800. Men whose furthest known male ancestor on their paternal (surname) line lived elsewhere in the Outer Banks or the nearby coastal margins may also be accepted, if their surname matches that of men known to have lived in the area prior to 1800. Anyone eligible to join Hatteras-Fathers, automatically can join Hatteras-Families; however, the Family Finder test is recommended for participants. If you have had mitochondrial DNA testing, another group you may be eligible to join is Hatteras-Mothers. Check these projects for more information.
