This is a surname-based Y-DNA Project. The Y-chromosome is passed down from father to son. Thus, Y-chromosomal DNA is passed down the direct paternal (patrilineal) line, making it a useful tool to investigate the ancestral origins of people sharing the same surname.  

To join this project, one must fulfil two criteria:- 

1. Possession of one of the following surnames:-

- Hathway

- Hathaway

- Hatheway

- Hattaway 

- or other similar sounding variant.  

Where there is sufficient evidence of a surname change from 'Hathaway' (or variant) to a different surname, such individuals might also join the project, at the discretion of the Hathaway Y-DNA Project Administrator.

2. The prospective project member must have taken (or plan to take) a Y-Chromosomal test (Y37/Y67/Y111/SNP testing).

Whilst only males possess a Y-chromosome, we welcome female members who have tested a male relative who possesses one of the above surnames. 

The bulk of our existing members have taken a Y-STR test. For anyone who is considering taking a Y-DNA test or upgrade, please drop us a line before placing an order, so that we can advise you accordingly, and we can then explore what your aims are and how best to proceed. In this way, we ensure that those wishing to test do not waste money on an unnecessary or incorrect DNA test.

With regard to the 'Next Generation' SNP testing, FTDNA offers the BigY test, as well as standalone SNP tests. We currently have a limited number of BigY testers, and it is our hope that in time, more will take this test, as it has the power to establish similarities and subtle differences within the Hathaway family branches. This coupled with traditional 'paper genealogy', can produce powerful results.
