About us

We are just getting started and encourage you to join us in our discoveries.

Both the Y-DNA and the mtDNA test results contain no personal information, and you will match or be a close match to those to whom you are related. This is an opportunity to learn more about your origins and ancestry.

News:

Aug. 10, 2015 - The Project is launched with its first new member (the Project Administrator Bruce Fogwell)

If you are interested in joining from other projects and other testing companies:

If you have already had your DNA tested with Family Tree DNA aspart of a surname project, a haplogroup project or another geographical projectyou are welcome to join this project too. There is no extra charge for joining multiple projects and there is no limit on the number of projects that you can join. The Fogwell/Vogwill& variants Family DNA Project is also able to accept results from people who have tested with one of the FTDNA affiliates such as DNA Worldwide or iGENEA. If you have already tested with the Genographic Project you can also join this project at no extra charge. Simply log in to your GenographicProject page, go to the section "What else can I do with my results",click on "Learn more" and follow the instructions.

If you had taken an autosomal DNA test with a group other thanFTDNA, you may be able to transfer your results to FTDNA. For example, anautosomal DNA test taken with AncestryDNA, or an autosomal DNA test taken with 23andMe provided the test used the previous V3 chip, not the current V4 chip orolder V2 chip, should be transferable. We recommend that you first check with FTDNA to confirm that it will accept the results of the test in question. If your test results are acceptable, you can transfer your autosomal results tothe FTDNA Family Finder database free of charge. This will give you access only to your first 20 matches. We suggest that you take the extra step to unlock all of your matches and myOrigins. You can do this either by paying an extra charge($39.00 as of July 2015), or by recruiting 4 friends or relatives to upload their raw data. Once you recruit 4 people, your results will be unlocked even if your recruits don’t unlock their full results. For details of the autosomal DNA transfer program, see here

If you had taken a Y-DNA test with a testing group that use the Sorenson 33 or 46-marker test, you can transfer your results to the FTDNA database. For example, Y-DNA test results done by Ancestry.com in the past (Ancestry no longer offers Y-DNA tests) or by GeneTree should be transferable. Again, it is recommended that you first check with FTDNA to confirm that it will accept the results of the test in question. If such a transfer is possible, we recommend that you order the Transfer with the Upgrade ($58.00 as of July 2015) as this will not only provide you with all matches and full access to your matches’ names and e-mail addresses and any genealogical information they have provided, a printable Y-DNA certificate which includes your name and marker (STR) values, haplogroup, and unlimited match updates, but FTDNA will also at no additional charge send a 37-marker DNA kit for the testee to take to enable FTDNA to capture certain markers that are not provided in the other Y-DNA tests.  For further information click here.

FTDNA acquired the British DNA testing company DNA Heritage in April 2011. Instructions for transferring your DNA Heritage results to FTDNA can be found here

Again, please be sure to sign the release form so that if the FTDNA matching program finds a genetic match between you and another person in the database have each signed the release form, FTDNA will notify you via e-mail of the match.
