About us

Goals:

The purpose of this Fogwell/Vogwill & variants Family DNA Project is to help trace Family ancestry/descendancy and to identify, verify Family Members who are related by blood or marriage, and help connect if they are so inclined.

Goals include:

* Discovering information to help with our family history research

* Discovering which family trees are related

* Discovering information which may solve research problems, and/or resolve brick walls

* Sorting out multiple families found in the same location

* Confirming or get clues regarding migrations

* Confirming suspected events, such as illegitimacy and adoption

* Finding any mistaken connections in family trees

* Validating family history research

* Bridging gaps in the paper records

* Confirming surname variants or find previously unknown variants

* Discovering information to define the major branches of the tree going back to the origin of the surname

* Discovering information about the evolution of the surname

* Discovering clues regarding the origin of the surname

* Combining results with research in early records to determine the number of points of origin for the surname

* Preserving DNA results for future research, to protect against any male line becoming extinct

* Discovering information about our distant origins

This Project is being run in collaboration with the Fogwill One-Name Study Project which is registered with the Guild of One-Name Studies. The Fogwill/Fogwell/Vogwell/Vogwill One Name Study undertakes the research of the genealogy and family history of all persons, worldwide, with those surnames.  The study coordinator researches the origin of the surname and its meaning, its frequency and distribution over both geography and time and the patterns of immigration and emigration. Because there are only a small number of person with these surnames, the project coordinator is also attempting to reconstruct Fogwill/Fogwell/Vogwell/Vogwill families. That project is administered by Lynn Fogwill, email: fogwill@one-name.org, who is also a co- Administrator of this Fogwell/Vogwill & variants Family DNA Project.

Since the Family originated in Devon, you may be interested in the Devon Family History Society (DHFS).

And members of this Fogwell/Vogwill & variants Family DNA Project who have a documented trail to Devon (e.g., paper documentation or Gedcom file) may want to consider joining the Devon DNA Project administered by Debbie Kennett. Please note that the Devon Project is not able to accept deep-rooted lines from America where the only connection with Devon is in the 1500s or 1600s.The purpose of this project is provided here.
