About us

This site was originally set up by Stephen Ferriss who was the Administrator until 12 November 2013. This is why the Project Name sometimes comes up as FERRISS.  FTDNA is unable to change the url. 
John Adam Farris ran this group until his death in 2024. He can be credited with most of the descriptions and subgroups created in this project. Josh Faris then took over as the 3rd administrator, while Elvin Farris has faithfully served as co-admin with both John and Josh. 

Over time, other FARRIS men started to join this group which introduced many other spelling variations. Some of these spelling variations have already been connected by Y-DNA matches. As more men join this project, we can expect even more Y-DNA matches between the various spellings.

However, others whose names belonged to the larger FARRIS Surname Group started joining.  Seventy-five possible spelling variations have now been identified within the FARRIS Surname Group.  These spelling variations have been identified within historical and genealogical records and include:

There may be more possible spelling variations, but these 75 should do for now.  The most common in use today are shown in bold.  These name variations have been found being used in Scotland, Ulster, the American Colonies and the USA.  Since many (if not most) of our ancestors were illiterate, the scribe writing the document wrote down what he heard.  I have seen documents where the name is spelled two ways in the same document.
