About us

Initially, the Zachariah FERRISS line was being compared to the Stephen FERRISS line both of New Milford, Connecticut mid 1700s. However, a Jeffery FERRIS descendant also joined so ... we should have representation from the major early American Ferris(s) lines.  This site was originally set up by Stephen FERRISS who was the administrator until now.  We appreciate his hard work.

However, others whose names belonged to the larger FARRIS Surname Group started joining.  Seventy-five possible spelling variations have now been identified within the FARRIS Surname Group.  These spelling variations have been identified within historical and genealogical records and include:

FAARRIES, FAIRES, FAIRESS, FAIRIE, FAIRIES, FAIRIS, FAIRISS, FAIRY, FARES, FARICE, FARIE, FARIES, FARIS, FARISH, FARISS, FARRAR, FARRARS, FARRAS, FARRER, FARRES, FARRERS, FARRIE, FARRIES, FARRIS, FARRISE, FARRISH, FARRISS, FARRIST, FARRUS, FARRY, FARUS, FARY, FAREY, FAYRUS,
FEARGHUR, FEARGHURS, FEARIS, FEARISS, FEARRIS, FEARRISS, FEARUS, FEARYS, FEOURUS, FERERS, FERIER, FERIERS, FERIES, FERIS, FERISS, FERRAR, FERRAR, FERRER, FERRERS, FERRES, FERRIER, FERRIERES, FERRIES, FERRIS, FERRISS, FERYES, FFAIRE, FFAIRIES, FIRRIS,
PHAIRES, PHARIA, PHARIAS, PHARES, PHARIS, PHARISS, PHARRIS, PHARRISS, PHARUS, PHEARIS, PHEARYS, PHERIS, PHERRIS & PHERRISS.

There may be more possible spelling variations, but these 75 should do for now.  The most common in use today are shown in bold.  These name variations have been found being used in Scotland, Ulster, the American Colonies and the USA.  Since many (if not most) of our ancestors were illiterate, the scribe writing the document wrote down what he heard.  I have seen documents where the name is spelled two ways in the same document.
