About us

According to several sources, the surname "Erskine" derives from a place (now town) of the same name outside of Glasgow on the River Clyde, and has a long record in the history of Scotland that stretches back to the 13th century. The first recorded use of the surname was Henry de Erskine, whose estate encompassed the land around Erskine. Additional research suggests that Henry de Erskine himself came to Scotland from Flanders.

Over the next 800 years various branches of the family were seated in different parts of Scotland, as well as moving to Ireland in the 1700s and also emigrating to North America and elsewhere across the globe.

This group is open to all Erskines and related surnames with Y-DNA data and we will attempt to differentiate the various lineages based on yDNA markers and Haplogroups.  The more participants, the better!

The initial project administrator was Andy Askey, who is a descendant of Thomas Erskine/Askey.  The project has been dormant for some time but we're now trying to get it up and running again--and are looking forward to incorporating the great new tools FTDNA has released over the past couple of years!
