The Ely Carrolls come from counties Offaly and Tipperary in Ireland. The sept is also known as Eile and Clan Cian. One descendant, Charles Carroll of Carrollton (1737-1832), was a wealthy landowner in Maryland and a signer of the Declaration of Independence in 1776.
