About us

This project is for men who have done Y-DNA testing and who have tested positive or are predicted to be positive based on Y-STR comparison for the Y14891 SNP or any of its downstream SNPs. Family Tree DNA provides a conservative haplogroup assignment, one they can assign with near certainty. Many of the project members have the haplogroup assignment of E-L117 or E-M35.  This is a main haplogroup branch that formed over 20,000 years ago. Y14891 and its downstream SNPs Z36149 and Y16781 occurred on the E-L117/E-M35 branch many thousand years after E-L117/M35 was formed. Everyone in this project is expected to be at least positive for the Y14891 SNP, even if their FTDNA assigned haplogroup is E-L117 or E-M35. Haplogroup E-Y14891 was formed around 1300 years ago and is almost exclusively Jewish. It coincides with the genetic bottleneck that occured in the early European Jewish population during the Middle Ages. Many other major Jewish haplogroups have similar ages to E-Y14891.
