About us

This project hopes to establish the DNA signatures of the various DUNGWORTH, DONGWORTH, DUNWORTH, DUNSWORTH family lines.

====================================================

One of the earliest known DUNGWORTH families resided in the area of York, England.

When standing on the hill in Dungworth, from any direction, the beauty of the countryside is breath taking. Nestling in the valley below is Dam Flask, surrounded by the patchwork green of fields and woods – the heart of the country.

Ten minutes away by car is the Derbyshire Peak District, and yet it is only seven miles to the centre of Sheffield.

Dungworth is a small village with only 90 houses, and is connected by two lanes to the hamlet of , which has approximately 23 houses, so the population in this area is quite small.

Dungworth village is thought to date back to the c13th, but the meaning of the name is uncertain. One meaning suggests a dwelling that is partly underground, another suggests it refers to a dwelling with a dung-covered roof.

The listed names have been taken from "The Place Names of the West Riding of Yorkshire. Part I"

The Name Society Publication, Vol. 30 , 1961.

MARCH 2012 --

Emmanuel Dungworth must have thought himself blessed when, in 1715, he chose the bank of the Pennypack Creek for his gristmill and millwright's house in the village known as the Billet. There, along an Indian trail, were water to power the mill and patrons to buy the flour. Local lore has it that George Washington stopped by to purchase grain for his militia in 1777.

For nearly three centuries, the sturdy stone and wood buildings at Horsham and York Roads in what is now Hatboro have stood as a tangible link to the past.

But the link may soon be gone.

Wawa Inc. wants to raze the millwright's house and another building next door to build a supersize convenience store and gas station. Only the grist mill would be spared, as a donation to the community.

The project has hit a nerve in usually placid Hatboro, spawning a new 250-member residents'group dead-set against it.

February 7, 2012

A grassroots group has formed in Hatboro comprised of residents who feel the borough’s charm and history are being uprooted to make way for commercial properties.

Wawa wants to buy both lots on either side of from the bank that owns them, but only demolish the mill home across from the inn that houses a spa operation as well as an old home behind that.

The two structures are believed to be the oldest standing structures in Hatboro and were built by Emmanuel Dungworth and his family around 1720.

Organization of DNA kits into subgroups and naming of those groups is done by project administrators after analyzing the comparative results.  Placement of DNA kits within the subgroups is dictated by FTDNA programming and cannot be altered by project administrators.  Many of the testees in this project have ordered testing on advanced markers ( STRs ) or individual STRs in the last marker panel.  FTDNA programming at this time does not allow for the display of those markers.  Many testees have also ordered the Deep Clade Haplogroup SNP test and advanced SNP testing.  Project administrators have indicated the primary haplogroup branch SNP in the name of the subgroups where applicable.
